EP 1075 So many people make this core networking mistake . . . it isn’t funny.

Summary

I thought I would do a short video about what I call casting Internet in all the wrong places.

When people are networking, they are networking with people just like them. They are hoping to be introduced to people who play bigger, people at a higher level than them who make decisions. This is true in job hunting as well as in business. The result was that being that the people that you talk to aren't able to make a decision. In addition, often they don't know many people who are decision-makers outside of their own organization. So, what's the point?

If you been to a Chamber of Commerce meeting or to a business group, you run into this problem all the time. I'll even go so far as to say run into this with LinkedIn. With LinkedIn, I get tons of connection requests. Of the 17,000 or so people connected to me, I reached out to probably fewer than a thousand of them. They reached out to me because I have such a powerful brand – – The Big Game Hunter.

I understand that their version of networking is to gain access to my network, but they're not really contacting anyone there, and they aren't asking me to introduce them to anyone in my network, either. So, what's the point?

What's the point of speaking to people or reaching out to people who can't help you? What's the point of reaching out to people who won't help you. Because all they are doing is going, "Give me. Give me. Give me." And what's amazing is that you are back there saying and doing the same thing. "Give me. Give me. Give me I need. I need." Is not exactly a relationship that's going to work, is it?

After all, both of you are so busy grasping, "Please help me. I need your help, please. Help me!" It just doesn't work, does it? If it was working, you wouldn't be watching this video would you?

I want to encourage you to do something a little bit different. I would encourage you to help other people before you ask for help. This requires investment of time and trust on your part that if you give, you will receive. I know the business networking group, BNI, as this is the core philosophy of the group. I also know that in job search and other fields as well, it works, too.

I want to encourage you to think, not in terms of, "Give me. Give me. Give me." Instead, think in terms of giving first in order to receive.

Then, the next thing is to start operating at a higher level. Don't just reach out to people who are like you.

1. Think in terms of networking to a higher level where you can assist them. I know for myself. I met a lot of very successful people over the years and, at times, I've just offered a gift of advice 2 people who are struggling in some way at a certain stage of their life. They come back to me and allow me to be of service to them in their organization and thus have a written business many times over.

Again, if you are operating at your level. Often, you are not getting to people who write checks., You are getting to people who have to go hat in hand to present your case to someone. It reminds me of the situation where I was coaching someone recently. They are trying to build the business and they have to go to someone who has to be in contact with procurement. Invariably, procurement is going to say no. Why? Because that's the habit that they operate with.

"Fill out this form and make 47 different copies of it. Send it back to us and will get back to you in about a year."

What's the point of doing all of this? You have to get to real decision-makers and network your way to them.

Again, networking in the wrong places may feel good temporarily, but if you're not getting results, what's the point? Why are you engaged in that effort if the result is going to be just a bunch of people smiling, with drinks in their hand, all saying, "Do you know anyone? Okay." "Do you know anyone? Okay." "Do you know anyone? Okay." Doing that for an entire evening. UGH!

EP 1417 How do I turn down an invitation for coffee from the CTO of a firm?

Summary

Here's a fun question!

"How do I turn down a coffee invite from the CTO of a successful startup?" They go on to say, "I got an email invite from CTO of a software startup that was recently acquired. He mentioned looking up my profile/works online and was interested to talk to me over a coffee. I am, however, not looking for a change in job right now. How do I politely decline him while mentioning that I would like to be in touch with him / her and be able to get in touch when I am actively looking." They live in the Bay area.

I want to take this into a broader range of an answer and talk about how you respond to an invitation for coffee from someone who might be interested in talking with you about you . . Or might be interested in talking with you about them.

It goes back to the basic idea about networking. Why do you network? It's to build up relationships of the time, we might actually need help, they know, like, trust and respect you. Maybe the trying to build up a relationship in order to find out if there's something in your organization. I don't know anything about your experience or your level professionally so it could go either way, but the likelihood is that they are going to be talking about trying to recruit you.

A long time ago, I learned a wonderful lesson. It is the notion that the person who gets ahead isn't always the smartest or work the hardest (although those a great qualities to have). The person who gets ahead is the one who remains alert to opportunities. Sometimes those are internal to the organization, but more often than not, they are external.

Whether you are changing jobs or interested in changing jobs right now or not, developing relationship with the successful individual, someone who is further along the road and you are, can always pay off. To decline an invitation is really a goofy response.

Yes, you are happy. Walk in there as a happy individual who likes his work. Consider that you might like your work even more if you are pay $25,000 more than you are now would receive more options. Isn't that possible? I would tell you to go on this meeting.

If you really do want to decline, do so politely , but start off by asking, ". But the subject would be of our conversation?" Make them explain what the purpose of the meeting is, discuss dates and times to meet, but they continue by saying, "I want to be clear, I'm not out there actively looking for position." This way, you're not leading them on in any way.

I want to keep encouraging you to get out there and keep talking to people. After all, your network is your net worth. Developing relationships with someone NOW when you are not actively looking can only be profitable to you at some point in the future.

EP 1390 I tell a story about a mistake I made and its impact. Many of you do the same thing.

Summary

I want to tell you a story today about a networking mistake I made.

I will simply say that I have been part of a business networking group for a couple of years and I was being elevated to regional role. So I was sent off to training and, as it turns out, most of the people in the room where the training was occurring had already taken this course and many of them were owners of franchises within this business. So, I may have been the one newbie in the room actually receiving training. It was a very frustrating experience for me.

I would ask a question because I wanted to know the answer and was treated as though I was an ignorant buffoon. I got frustrated and let my frustration show at different times. I'm not blaming them, but at times, my frustration became apparent in the little facial gestures and in little comments I would make that I thought no one could hear but they could. Later on, as someone was talking, they made a comment about me that said, “Why is he here,” and I realized the impact of what I had done in how people perceived me.

That I was treated as being ignorant and didn't belong in the room . . . that's their problem. My problem was how I said that message to them and we all know how this happens in the workplace on a day-to-day basis where someone makes a snide comment, which is, frankly, what I did, and it gets noticed, picked up on and the person's career is hurt as a result of it.

in this group, at 1 point I made a comment that I didn’t think someone could hear and let my frustration show. I didn't try and persevere. I kind of shut down. Thus, I relayed the story to you about realizing the little things that get noticed, filed away that creates the impression with people that isn't beneficial.

When you're in a networking situation, you want to be all in. You want to be trying to connect with people, trying to do outreach, picking up the relationships and not holding back. Even if you swatted away as I was by the instructor a couple of times and who was just very frustrating for me, it's irrelevant. My behavior is what hurt me because the room was with her and not with me. I had done nothing to win the room over.

This may sound complicated; it really isn’t. Just be aware that people notice everything you do, don't do, say or not say and think of the message that you're trying to convey in networking situations and whether that comment really needs to be said or whether that acting out really needs to be done or whether you can just put it aside and be an adult . . . Which I clearly wasn't.

You get what I needed out of the situation which, for me, was more connection with some of the people the room so I can work with them afterwards. I made a mistake and I am trying to head you are from a career or job search mistake that that happens way too often.

You go into a networking meeting. You're off on the sidelines. You feel frustrated. You don't communicate with anyone. You send the message of being aloof, instead of being connected.

You were there to network. Get into the conversation. You know how to do that. Seriously, you know how to do that. Even if you are a beginner, you kinda sidle your way over and start standing on the sidelines. Have your face seen and notice how the conversation is and then contribute something positive to it that moves it forward at the right time. You know what that is. I don't have to tell you that.

So, this is a mistake I made. I hope you don't make it.

EP 1399 Today, we discuss another of the mistakes people when networking.

Summary

This video continues an idea that I have to discuss networking mistakes that people make. It is the notion of not meeting enough people. A quick story they'll do from the notion of all the stories that you hear in sales. Networking is a sales process.

1 of the classic sale scenarios is about salespeople who give up too soon. There are people who give up at the 50 yard line. The 20 yard line. The 10. The 5. The 1 yard line. The 1 inch line! And they never pushed through to the other side of victory. They give up prematurely.

Not meeting enough people kind of falls into that category. People may go to a networking event or reaching out to folks. You may talk to 1 or 2 people and not get results. You give up. That goes back to the notion that I mentioned in the previous video about impatience. In your lack of perseverance, you give up much too soon. After all, you are not masterful at networking yet, your practicing with different people. Maybe you've gone to the wrong place or spoken with the wrong people.

However, for job hunters, the statistics are that more than two thirds of positions are filled as a result of networking. For businesses, particularly solopreneurs and small businesses, 1 of the best ways to build your business is through your network of relationships. Putting yourself in the position of meeting people, not just to, you know, but people who you know who you know people outside of your original comfort zone.

The idea is to always be reaching out, to practice reaching out and not everyplace that you will go is going to be a successful meeting. That should be considered a given. By reaching out to others and doing the work and creating the relationships – – I'm not talking about being best friends – – by periodically reaching out and reconnecting, your network will start to grow, and more opportunities will come to you. AND they come to you more easily.

Again, back to the patient's idea, if you think this is going to happen in a day, a week, or a month, you are wrong and you are giving up, in a job search case, 2/3+ of the potential opportunities that could exist for you as a result of your impatience.

The notion is to put yourself in the position where people get to know you, like you, respect you and trust you. I think we've all heard the expression, "Know, like and trust," but I think respect is a big part of the equation. After all, we may know someone, we may like someone, we may trust them, but were not going to refer them unless respect them and what they do.

I want to encourage you to put yourself out there more frequently. Keep talking to more folks. I don't care if you are a small business owner, a big business owner (Lord knows there very successful major salespeople who do a purely through their network. There is something there, right).

Get yourself out and about talking to people. You will find this will help you. Don't just stop simply because 1 or 2 didn't work out for you. It has got to become a part of your regular repertoire.

This is a video where it doesn't really matter whether you're thinking of a from the standpoint of being a business owner, a job hunter, a friend. People make mistakes with your networking. I'm going to do a series that talks about some of the things that people mistakenly do that adversely affects the success of the networking that they do And causes them to go, "Ah! Networking doesn't work! It's ridiculous!"

Mistake number 1 is that you do everything online and never really talked to anyone. I know the trend really started with email. People used to write letters to individuals and stay in touch. In that way. We've gotten to the point where he never hear one another's voice or see anyone and thus the will heartfelt connection Between people that causes is a relationship to grow doesn't really exist. In one way, you may feel warmly or in a kindly way toward someone but not enough to really take action. That's really what you're looking for, whether it's in your personal life or your professional life, You want some sort of action to occur. It just doesn't happen without the personal connection.

I recognize that all of us have relationships that are all over the country now and it may be impossible to do it face-to-face and in person now. There is Skype and FaceTime and other tools now Where you can see one another and talk to one another. It makes a difference.

I know there are friends of mine. I have not seen in years. We will talk.. We will Skype. We will do a number of different things to stay in contact.It's wonderful! That's mistake number 1 I wanted to call attention to.

Number 2, Let me go to professional level. People have unrealistic expectations. Whether is the impact that what they do on LinkedIn or on Facebook or in person, They may think that people are going to drop everything that they're doing and help them. They may not completely believe this but they hope this. It doesn't really work that way. If you're only communicating with people at times when you have a need rather than having a relationship, they probably won't be really motivated to take action. In addition, if you are doing that,People have lives to pull them in lots of different directions.

Normally, it takes several touches over the course of time to really get your network going. Don't be surprised if there is no instant response to you reaching you. Don't get angry. Don't get to stall. Don't get annoyed. Don't throw your hands up as I did before and complain that networking doesn't work. It does work.. It's just that you haven't been doing it right. You can correct this mistake.

I would ask a question because I wanted to know the answer and was treated as though I was an ignorant buffoon. I got frustrated and let my frustration show at different times. I'm not blaming them, but at times, my frustration became apparent in the little facial gestures and in little comments I would make that I thought no one could hear but they could. Later on, as someone was talking, they made a comment about me that said, “Why is he here,” and I realized the impact of what I had done in how people perceived me.

That I was treated as being ignorant and didn't belong in the room . . . that's their problem. My problem was how I said that message to them and we all know how this happens in the workplace on a day-to-day basis where someone makes a snide comment, which is, frankly, what I did, and it gets noticed, picked up on and the person's career is hurt as a result of it.

in this group, at 1 point I made a comment that I didn’t think someone could hear and let my frustration show. I didn't try and persevere. I kind of shut down. Thus, I relayed the story to you about realizing the little things that get noticed, filed away that creates the impression with people that isn't beneficial.

When you're in a networking situation, you want to be all in. You want to be trying to connect with people, trying to do outreach, picking up the relationships and not holding back. Even if you swatted away as I was by the instructor a couple of times and who was just very frustrating for me, it's irrelevant. My behavior is what hurt me because the room was with her and not with me. I had done nothing to win the room over.

This may sound complicated; it really isn’t. Just be aware that people notice everything you do, don't do, say or not say and think of the message that you're trying to convey in networking situations and whether that comment really needs to be said or whether that acting out really needs to be done or whether you can just put it aside and be an adult . . . Which I clearly wasn't.

You get what I needed out of the situation which, for me, was more connection with some of the people the room so I can work with them afterwards. I made a mistake and I am trying to head you are from a career or job search mistake that that happens way too often.

You go into a networking meeting. You're off on the sidelines. You feel frustrated. You don't communicate with anyone. You send the message of being aloof, instead of being connected.

You were there to network. Get into the conversation. You know how to do that. Seriously, you know how to do that. Even if you are a beginner, you kinda sidle your way over and start standing on the sidelines. Have your face seen and notice how the conversation is and then contribute something positive to it that moves it forward at the right time. You know what that is. I don't have to tell you that.

So, this is a mistake I made. I hope you don't make it.

EP 1399 Today, we discuss another of the mistakes people when networking.

Summary

This video continues an idea that I have to discuss networking mistakes that people make. It is the notion of not meeting enough people. A quick story they'll do from the notion of all the stories that you hear in sales. Networking is a sales process.

1 of the classic sale scenarios is about salespeople who give up too soon. There are people who give up at the 50 yard line. The 20 yard line. The 10. The 5. The 1 yard line. The 1 inch line! And they never pushed through to the other side of victory. They give up prematurely.

Not meeting enough people kind of falls into that category. People may go to a networking event or reaching out to folks. You may talk to 1 or 2 people and not get results. You give up. That goes back to the notion that I mentioned in the previous video about impatience. In your lack of perseverance, you give up much too soon. After all, you are not masterful at networking yet, your practicing with different people. Maybe you've gone to the wrong place or spoken with the wrong people.

However, for job hunters, the statistics are that more than two thirds of positions are filled as a result of networking. For businesses, particularly solopreneurs and small businesses, 1 of the best ways to build your business is through your network of relationships. Putting yourself in the position of meeting people, not just to, you know, but people who you know who you know people outside of your original comfort zone.

The idea is to always be reaching out, to practice reaching out and not everyplace that you will go is going to be a successful meeting. That should be considered a given. By reaching out to others and doing the work and creating the relationships – – I'm not talking about being best friends – – by periodically reaching out and reconnecting, your network will start to grow, and more opportunities will come to you. AND they come to you more easily.

Again, back to the patient's idea, if you think this is going to happen in a day, a week, or a month, you are wrong and you are giving up, in a job search case, 2/3+ of the potential opportunities that could exist for you as a result of your impatience.

The notion is to put yourself in the position where people get to know you, like you, respect you and trust you. I think we've all heard the expression, "Know, like and trust," but I think respect is a big part of the equation. After all, we may know someone, we may like someone, we may trust them, but were not going to refer them unless respect them and what they do.

I want to encourage you to put yourself out there more frequently. Keep talking to more folks. I don't care if you are a small business owner, a big business owner (Lord knows there very successful major salespeople who do a purely through their network. There is something there, right).

Get yourself out and about talking to people. You will find this will help you. Don't just stop simply because 1 or 2 didn't work out for you. It has got to become a part of your regular repertoire.

Networking Mistakes: Not Enough Done In Person and Unreasonable Expectations

This is a video where it doesn't really matter whether you're thinking of a from the standpoint of being a business owner, a job hunter, a friend. People make mistakes with your networking. I'm going to do a series that talks about some of the things that people mistakenly do that adversely affects the success of the networking that they do And causes them to go, "Ah! Networking doesn't work! It's ridiculous!"

Mistake number 1 is that you do everything online and never really talked to anyone. I know the trend really started with email. People used to write letters to individuals and stay in touch. In that way. We've gotten to the point where he never hear one another's voice or see anyone and thus the will heartfelt connection Between people that causes is a relationship to grow doesn't really exist. In one way, you may feel warmly or in a kindly way toward someone but not enough to really take action. That's really what you're looking for, whether it's in your personal life or your professional life, You want some sort of action to occur. It just doesn't happen without the personal connection.

I recognize that all of us have relationships that are all over the country now and it may be impossible to do it face-to-face and in person now. There is Skype and FaceTime and other tools now Where you can see one another and talk to one another. It makes a difference.

I know there are friends of mine. I have not seen in years. We will talk.. We will Skype. We will do a number of different things to stay in contact.It's wonderful! That's mistake number 1 I wanted to call attention to.

Number 2, Let me go to professional level. People have unrealistic expectations. Whether is the impact that what they do on LinkedIn or on Facebook or in person, They may think that people are going to drop everything that they're doing and help them. They may not completely believe this but they hope this. It doesn't really work that way. If you're only communicating with people at times when you have a need rather than having a relationship, they probably won't be really motivated to take action. In addition, if you are doing that,People have lives to pull them in lots of different directions.

Normally, it takes several touches over the course of time to really get your network going. Don't be surprised if there is no instant response to you reaching you. Don't get angry. Don't get to stall. Don't get annoyed. Don't throw your hands up as I did before and complain that networking doesn't work. It does work.. It's just that you haven't been doing it right. You can correct this mistake.

I want to talk with you today about the networking mistake that way too many people make. Let me illustrate.

People have this ridiculous idea that if they reach out to people that they know one time by email, by phone, by posting on social media, whether that is LinkedIn or Facebook or twitter, their network is ACTIVATED! Nothing could be further from the truth.

After all, how much do you do for a friend after you've gotten an email from them? If you're like most people, the answer is probably nothing. I don't say that to criticize you, but the point that they you are expecting others to do more than you do from them.

In point of fact, it takes multiple contacts with people to get them to take action, but making those contacts can be very easy.

It can be as easy as calling them every other week to ask how they are and when they reciprocate and ask you how you are doing saying to them something to the effect of, "well, I'm still out there looking. I have had some good interviews and some less good interviews but I'm still out there talking with people."

Usually, just hearing your voice is enough to activate their interest in helping, but if asked, this is a good way of responding.
