Why Do Behavioral Interview Questions Work? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

Listen to the full episode here:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thebiggamehunter/2017/04/29/why-do-behavioral-interview-questions-work

EP 730 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains why behavioral interview questions work.

Summary

I was asked why behavioral interviews questions work. What is a behavioral interview? I behavioral interview is a type of interview where questions start off, "tell me about a time when you…" You know questions where you are able to tell stories.

Even the toughest question… You can find the answer on the web. I but some of them on my blog, http://thebiggamehunter.us. Use the categories featuring the Bonhomme to pull up tough interview. I have so many of these questions the job hunters don't spend the time practicing.. You don't spend the time learning how to answer these questions. You don't spend the time and review. Just like you don't spend the time practicing how to answer simple questions like, "Tell me about yourself." You just think that you should walk in and when it. That's why employers use this type of question. So many job hunters are just too lazy to take the time to be a champion.

I'm going to use the metaphor of the athlete. When you think a process football team comes out on the field do you think they haven't practiced repeatedly all the same plays for years? Do you think a baseball player hasn't spent time in the batting cage learning how to hit? Do you think they don't practice defense of plays with cutoffs in order to execute them? Yet you think you can go on an interview and just show up.

Do the smart thing. Start learning how to answer these questions. After all, great athletes are paid millions and millions of dollars to practice how to perform. Entertainers, singers, actors and actresses are paid millions of dollars in order to execute on the stage and allow them to be loved by an audience and make their performance credible. And you shop on an interview. Never having rehearsed your lines. Does that make a lot of sense to you?

Stop Hitting Your Head Against the Wall | JobSearchTV.com

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter speaks to those who are finding it impossible to find work and offers them a suggestion that will help.

Summary

For some of you, you been hitting your head against the wall in your job search now for what seemed like an eternity. Your getting no results. And by the way, an eternity is not a week. But this can apply to you as well during the time that you are searching. But this is really a tip for the long-term unemployed. For folks who are just hitting their head against the wall. And this could be true of veteran individuals and it's certainly true of people who try to launch – – graduated school – – and just not getting anywhere.

What can you do? What can you do in the face of all this mounting pressure that you're feeling to find work? All the the lack of results that you're getting. What can you do? The answer is create your own job.

Creating your own job can be as simple as, if you're a writer, you start doing freelancing. You market yourself as a freelancer. You blog. You do a variety of different things that help other individuals through your efforts. Through that, you are going to publicize yourself. People will find your the web. You will mobilize yourself to get out and about in completely different ways so that, when all is said and done, people are going to learn about you.

I found with one person I was speaking with yesterday, she wound up with offers based upon her writing and her blogging and a variety of other things that she was doing. The same can happen for you.

You may be a marketing person. You may be a salesperson. You can still teach others to sell and market. You can still write about some of your ideas along these lines. You can pick up freelance work in your local community or around the country… or for that matter around the world.

Do you have to get the highest rate imaginable? No. You just need to work and, through the working, to build relationships and develop the skills and efforts that are going to be very helpful to you. So don't just simply look for big companies to hire you. Don't just simply try and knock on doors of small companies and say things like, " Hi! I am a fast learner. I can learn anything you give me to do." No one cares.

What they care about is can you give the results that helps them based upon what they need. Starting your own firm, creating your own job, starting your own small business, marketing your skills and talent – – I've seen it help so many people land work during this "great recession/depression" everyone referred to it as.

So don't just settle. Promote yourself. Create effort. Pick up freelance work. There are online sites like Upwork, for example, to help you find work. Get out there.

Tough Interview Questions: How Do You Use LinkedIn? | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to go beyond the obvious answer to the more subtle and powerful one.

Summary

The obvious answer isn't the right answer but you want to acknowledge it.
The obvious answer is, "I have a profile on LinkedIn and have used it in a way that allowed your firm to find me (or the recruiter who found me to refer me to you)." Part of this becomes building reputation and brand. But the best answer takes this part and goes a completely different route.
"But the other thing that I use it for (and this is where the best answer goes to) is use it as an intelligence resource. For example, on a project I did 2 years ago (or on a task I had assigned to be 2 years ago), where I didn't really know much about what I was being asked to do, I was able to use my network, not just simply for my 1st level connections, but to use an introduction from my 1st level connection to 3 people who let me do some research with them and pick their brain and the shortcut the amount of time that was spent on this project. From what could've been 2 weeks to 2 days. So, I use it as an information resource that helps me in my work day in and day out."
So, what I've done is acknowledge the obvious answer, but you also go into greater depth and talk about how you actually use it for intelligence.
By the way, if you're not using it this way, you really should be.

The “Find The Heavier Ball” Brainteaser

You are given 12 balls, 11 are identical, one is heavier. How do you find the heavier ball in only 3 moves?

Summary

Here's the problem. You are given 12 balls and a scale. Of the 12 balls, 11 are identical and one way slightly more. How do you find the heavier ball amongst these 12 using the scale only 3 times.

Here's the solution.

Take 5 balls and 5 balls and weigh them. If the scales are equal, you can discard the 10 balls and just weigh the other 2 to get your answer. That would be the 2nd use of the scale, in which case you have found the heavier ball into moves.

If on the other hand, the 1st weighing of 5 and 5 balls, one group is heavier, then, of the heavier group, way too against 2 (that's the 2nd use of the scale) and if they weigh the same, the 5th ball is the one that you are looking for.

If 1 of the groups of 2 balls is heavier, then take the heavier group of 2 balls and weigh them against each other (that's the 3rd use of the scale) and you'll find the heavier ball is the one that you are looking for.

The Missing Ingredient in Most Resumes | JobSearchTV.com

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the missing ingredient in too many resumes.

Summary

Today, I want to offer to you a job interview tip that I see time and again, no matter how much I tell people they forget to do. The reminder is that when you are an interview and you're being asked about something that you done, most people talk about the situation or off our answer to the question without offering an example.

Examples (please excuse example. I'm going to give) are like mayonnaise to tuna in a sandwich. It's the thing that blends everything together to give it all a great flavor.

When you are interviewing, don't neglect great examples because they really give sustenance and texture and flavor to the story, different than simply reciting facts.

For example, if I were to talk about my background what I did recruiting, if I talk about the tasks of the day, it would certainly cause your eyes to glaze over within 5 minutes. However, if I talked about some of the difficult interviews I've conducted, some of the difficult situations of have to contend with involving job applicants who are just acting irrationally or institutional customers who are acting irrationally, how I handle the situations to bring both parties together so they might live happily ever after for many many years with one another would give you a better idea of what I used to do.

Don't neglect examples. Always use them in interviewing. Practice them in advance so that you are comfortable with them. Time and again, you will find that your interviews will thrive as a result.

Tough Interview Questions: Do You Take Work Home With You? | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers a quick, direct, no BS way to answer this question.

Summary

Let's go right to 1 of those tough interview questions that are designed to make it seemed foolish. Ready.? Most of these questions like it's not that difficult, but there is a mistake people make. I get to that in a second. Here is the question.

So, do you take work home with you? Tell us! Tell me! Hurry!

And it's all designed to exert a certain amount of pressure on you. At this point, when most people answer the question, they drone on and on and they give this lengthy answer. They give examples. They talk about stuff. They bore the other person when a simple, concise answer would really work much better than a lengthy one.

Here is a simple, concise answer. “I want you use you know I understand the importance of deadlines and deliverables and, him the fact of the matter is, there are times when you have to take work home with you to meet those deadlines. So, yes, of course, I do that. But in terms of a steady requirement, most of my work hasn't really required this as a steady thing. Do I do it as needed? Absolutely.”

So, I see this is the easiest way to do it – – short, simple, to the point. Don’t going into long stories. Don't tell about this time in “04 when , you took work home with you and how it rescued everyone. Just give me a straight, no BS answer that says, “Sure, I understand that there are times when deadlines are tight and you take work home with you . . . But etc.
