Job Search in 2024

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
If you are a college-educated private sector office worker, this may be your time to look at Plan B. Here are my thoughts about jobs in 2024.

00:00 Defining the problem
00:56 The solution
02:16 Summary and outro

I’m Not Getting Past the Recruiter

If you’re a college-educated, private sector, professional office worker, the economy right now is not creating jobs for you. We see it all it all over LinkedIn. Every day I log on and all day long, My feed is filled with people who are “open to work.” It is horrible. And the government thinks it’s wonderful.

They talk about 334,000 new jobs created, or whatever the big number is. But they’re not being created for you. They are being created for leisure and hospitality, government work, people whose jobs are funded by government, like social services, construction. And that’s great. But that doesn’t help you.

So I want to encourage you, as we end our 2023 and go into 2024, you have to start looking at getting to work, especially if you’ve been out for any length of time. You can’t count on full time positions, because the way I’m seeing things right now, is that we’ve got a presidential election year, we’ve got a tough economy for everyone. What we also have is a situation where no one’s hiring. And if you were the CFO of a firm, how much new spend, do you think you’d authorize? Probably not a lot because it’s complicated out there.

So I want to encourage you to look at temp work, look at freelancing, look at consulting, as a way of riding out this hurricane. And as you apply for positions going forward, and people say, “Gee, you’ve had three/four jobs in 2024, to respond by saying, “if you remember, the economy for people like me was atrocious. And, as a result, I needed to ride through the hurricane. So I did what I could. But I’ve always wanted to work full time. I don’t like this gig stuff. But you got to do things in order to pay your bills.”

So don’t be reluctant to look at freelance work, consulting, temp assignments, until you can land something else. Hope you found this helpful. I’m Jeff Altman, my website is JobSearch.ommunity.
