I can think of few dopier mistakes than this one!

Summary

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a recruiter who does work all over the country. She was talking about an assignment that she was doing in Puerto Rico. On this assignment, she was asked to interview people to work in a call center. She was asked to assess for oral and written communications skills. So she does that and was finding some people who are very well spoken and some who aren't, just as you would expect. She also noticed that some of the well spoken individuals are being rejected by hiring managers. She and her partner will start to ask, "Why is that? Why are these people being turned down?" It's hard to find native English speakers on the island. What is the issue?

She then spoke to a few of the hiring managers and found the magic answer. Judging by the title of this video, you know what it is. Appearing unmotivated.

Put yourself in the seat of the hiring manager. Hiring managers have a problem. They want someone who can solve that problem. I know it is hot in Puerto Rico. The association with hot is lethargic. It is hot out, I feel lethargic. It is tough to move around.

TOO BAD!! GET OVER IT!!

What you always have to do is appear excited and motivated on your interviews. Appearing sluggish or lethargic, or, dare I say, even lazy and unmotivated is the kiss of death, no matter what job you interview for, no matter where in the world it is.

Employers have a problem. You are there to solve it. They are not there to kiss your butt and make you fall in love with them. They want you clamoring for this job, begging for this job, appearing excited about this job even when you aren't. You want that too. If you do this, you get lots of job offers. You know, lots of job offers!

That way, you can go, "I think I want this one. It pays the most!" Or maybe it has the most upside. Whatever it is you can pick and choose between different alternatives that suit you.

Appearing unmotivated, stupid!

Take your right hand. Move it right near your forehead. Now hit.

Don't do something that dumb.

Tough Interview Questions: Do You Take Work Home With You? | JobSearchTV.com


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers a quick, direct, no BS way to answer this question.

Summary

Let's go right to 1 of those tough interview questions that are designed to make it seemed foolish. Ready.? Most of these questions like it's not that difficult, but there is a mistake people make. I get to that in a second. Here is the question.

So, do you take work home with you? Tell us! Tell me! Hurry!

And it's all designed to exert a certain amount of pressure on you. At this point, when most people answer the question, they drone on and on and they give this lengthy answer. They give examples. They talk about stuff. They bore the other person when a simple, concise answer would really work much better than a lengthy one.

Here is a simple, concise answer. “I want you use you know I understand the importance of deadlines and deliverables and, him the fact of the matter is, there are times when you have to take work home with you to meet those deadlines. So, yes, of course, I do that. But in terms of a steady requirement, most of my work hasn't really required this as a steady thing. Do I do it as needed? Absolutely.”

So, I see this is the easiest way to do it – – short, simple, to the point. Don’t going into long stories. Don't tell about this time in “04 when , you took work home with you and how it rescued everyone. Just give me a straight, no BS answer that says, “Sure, I understand that there are times when deadlines are tight and you take work home with you . . . But etc.

Let's talk about 1 of those tough interview questions that causes people to sweat bullets, become all nervous and none of them are particularly hard. My thinking is that it might be useful prepare for everything, to hear some the questions, get some ideas of answers, do it in your particular way, but try to work within the framework I am going to offer

So, today's tough question is, “So, tell me what you might've learned from 1 of your non-work experiences that you think is helping you?”

So, this is an invitation to talk about volunteerism that you are involved with. So the ideal way to the frame your answer is, if you are in management, you want to talk about not managing, but just doing and being reminded of how people think from “the doer perspective” and thus how it affects you favorably when you're leading.

If you are a staff level individual and you have an opportunity to lead, it's in appreciation for the effort that goes into leadership. So, the idea is to flip the 2 situations around.

Again, as an is a manager and above, the reminder of what it's like to be a doer. As a doer, you want to then to talk about the things that you learn about being a manager, a director . . . Being In some sort of leadership role that you normally haven't gotten yet at work and are aspiring to.

Tough Interview Questions: Tell Me About a Time You Were Treated Unfairly | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

This is a great trap question that employers use and I tell you how to avoid falling into the trap and what they are really looking for.

Summary

This question is going to sound like 1 of those questions a makes you scratch your head and wonder why they are asking it. "Tell me about a time you were treated unfairly. Or unjustly." I want to stick with "unfairly," because it is a simpler way of expressing it that most people can relate to.

What is an employer really looking for here? The fact of the matter is if they're using this question well, they are going to goad you into presenting yourself as being persecuted as being treated badly, and encouraging you to really give them a juicy description of what happened and how bad it was, and how horrible. They will say things like, "That's awful.." Or, "Really," or, "Wow!" And in doing so, they are going to instigate you into saying more.

That's the sucker move.

What they are really looking for is how you took ownership of the situation. Again, this is a question about ownership. This isn't about vomiting some deep-seated resentment of your life. Follow that? It isn't about vomiting deep-seated resentment, it is about how you took ownership of the situation.

Ownership can take a variety of different forms. For example, I remember one instance in my case where I set for the panel was evaluated and I thought I was treated very badly. They changed the rules of the game on but didn't tell me so I way with one expectation; they went with a completely different one that they didn't tell me about, at the end, I felt very frustrated and angry and hurt because I felt betrayed.

If I left the story at that point, I should be rejected because what they are looking for is someone who takes ownership. However, if I continue the story by saying, "Afterwards, there were a number of people who had the same experience. We got together and created a panel they made recommendations for a new process that panels could use to evaluate candidates.. From that, we developed a model that is still used to this day." You follow what I'm doing here?

It isn't the story, but what you did with the story that's important to the employer. Or what you learned from the experience at the most important part 2 what you relate.

To summarize, if you stick the feeling of persecution or being treated unfairly, you lose. If you convert the story into one that talks about how you use this experience to change process or change an organization or change the world, or do something, or what you learned from this experience that you apply even to this day, then you win.

How can you not appear difficult when an agency recruiter asks you for your salary and you won’t tell them.

Summary

How can you avoid appearing difficult when you won't tell a recruiter your last salary?

I was asked by a recruiter for my last salary and said I don't disclose that information. She said, "I was trying to be difficult and that she can't move forward . If I am not going to be a 'team player.'" Eventually, this person caved in   And when the telling the recruiter the salary.  This is 3rd party recruiter, not a corporate recruiter.

How can you avoid appearing difficult?  How can you stand your ground without you appearing, to put it bluntly, being seen as a "pain in the pot."

The 1st thing to understand is that recruiters, whether corporate or third-party work for employers. The employer sets down terms of engagement.  They want to know salary.

Why Do They Want to Know?
Why do they want to know this?  Because many companies will only offer a percentage increase over what you are currently earning.  They are not in the, "We value this person to ask level" business and, as a result, pay them what they are really worth.  They work on formulas that allow them to only extend an offer by a certain percentage  above a current salary.

No matter what, you are going to appear difficult. Accept it.

If you are extremely placeable to that agency, they are going to cave in. I want you to understand that you hold cards in your hand that represent a fee. If your background is so terrific that the market is clamoring for your skills, they will cave in and figure out a way to present your client without the exact salary.

You can offer them a range. "

I'm currently earning between $120,000 and $140,000. I want to be clear that I'm not looking for the lowest salary. I have picked up a lot of knowledge and experience that will be valuable to the next organization. If you think I'm going to be going for minimal 3% increase, you are mistaken. I want you to understand that I know my value and I want to be paid it."

By responding in that way, you are setting down terms of engagement that, by definition, make you appear very difficult to them because you are not compliant and you are not docile.  

You are not willing to play with in "the system."

So what! Who cares!

Firms that want to hire you for the least amount of money (which is what the agency will try to persuade you to take), well, you may not want to work for them.

However, that premier employer, that one you really want to work for demands that information, you have a choice to make – – to comply or not. Whether to risk losing an opportunity or not.

That's your choice to make, but to let the agency set down the conditions? You can do it differently IF you have the skills and experience that are in demand.

If you are Mr. or Ms. Ordinary , if you have a commodity skill

If you have a commodity skill, it is a lot harder for you. However, don't interpret that statement is telling you to always cave in.

Stand your ground. If you believe your skills are more valuable than what you've been paid and insist that they cave-in by demonstrating your value is higher than what they are going to try to con you in to.

just like a million other people out there, you have less of a chance, less leverage, than a salesperson has who is delivering a book of business worth several hundred million dollars and is a leader in selling this particular type of product or service.

Do You Consider Yourself a Strategic Thinker? | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 953 This is a trap question for people who are managers, directors, VP or C suite professionals.

Summary

Today, I want to answer 1 of those tough interview questions that, to me, is a trap question that you need to be prepared for if you are asked it on an interview. The question is, "Do you consider yourself a strategic thinker?"

I'm sure most of you are scratching their heads and going, "Sure, I'm a strategic thinker." You are racing into the trap if you immediately answer that way.

What you want to be doing is answering from a textured perspective and give them a more complex answer. Again, this is a question is being asked a manager level and above , and depending upon where you are in the pecking order, you have a perspective of what is appropriate and your level.

Conceptually, the right answer would be, "Yes I am a strategic thinker but to be effective as a strategic thinker you have to think tactically. Like in the military, it is not enough to have an effective strategy; you have to be able to implement it. Unless you able to implement it, all you have are some great ideas

And some great intentions but nothing changes.

To be an effective strategic thinker, to work with a strategy that helps an organization, you have to look at the implementation of it, what the rough edges might be, where it runs up against resistance forces."

Do you weren't coming from here? Always try to give them a textured answer that basically translates into, "Yes, I'm a strategic thinker but to be that way, you have to think tactically. It's like in the military. Military leaders, if you've ever spoken to them, our brilliant people. Incredibly smart. They can think in conceptual terms and technical terms for the battlefield."

It's really the same thing for you. You have to be able to talk about both the big picture and tactics.

Ending the Interview Right! (VIDEO)


In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the way to end a job interview and leave a great impression.

Summary

Let's talk about ending the interview. You've been sitting with them for about 45 minutes to an hour, or you've finished a phone call but, more often than not, this scenario is going to come up in the in-person interview.

Let's say your meeting with one person on your agenda; let's say your meeting with five. Whoever the final person is, they are going to be prepared to usher you out the door. Your final words to this person need to demonstrate your interest in the role. Why? Often this is used as a tiebreaker in a hiring manager's mind.

Here's how it works. They had decisions to make and will decide between you and several other people. How will they choose? Skills, obviously, come into consideration. There are a variety of different attributes they are looking for and personality they are evaluating you for.

Often, there is a very fine line between people. One of the things that starts to happen is managers don't want to make offers that they are not sure are going to be accepted. So, one of the tiebreakers they use in their own mind (after all, it's not like are sitting there going through the checklist, but sometimes it is on the checklist), is whether they think this person will accept our offer if we make a fair offer? Are they interested in the job? Do they want to come to work for us

A manager doesn't want to go through interviewing people multiple times for a job; they just want to be in a situation that if they extended an offer is going to be accepted and they will be done with the job.

Thus, your goal at the end of an interview is to demonstrate interest. So, with the last person you meet, you have to make it clear to them that you are interested in the role. It could be saying something as simple as, "I just want you to know how interested in this role I am. I just it will be a great opportunity for me and I would love to work for you." Or end it by saying the same thing plus, "I would love to work for your organization."

These are words that demonstrate sincere interest. You can't say this like it is canned speech. This is one of these times were acting needs to be part of your delivery.

It can be something as simple as, "I just want you are interested I am in the position and look forward to hearing from you about next steps." Or, "I would love to work for you," or, "I would love to work with Suresh," or "I would love to work with Joe," or Sharon or whomever the first name is some of that you met with. "I think this would be a great opportunity. I would love to work for themI would love to work here.I think there is a lot I could do here."

A lot depends upon the role. If you're an executive, there is a different language that you might use.

"I think this offers a great challenge. I have a few ideas of things that like to do but that's for another day."

"My mind is racing." Like I said, there's a different language. You can't make it sound like a canned speech. Again, this is one of these times were acting is a part of what you are going to be doing in your delivery.

Leave them knowing that you are interested. You can go so far as to ask, "what standing between you and extended an offer? Is there any additional information you need for me?"

You can do this on your way out the door so it doesn't appear to be part of any formal interview. Just let them know that you are interested, asked them for the job so that you ended in a way that lets them know of your interest.

Stupid Interview Mistakes: Sounding Like a Mexican Song

EP 853  There is a very dumb mistake that people make on interviews that I find reminds me of someone singing a Mexican song,

Summary

Here, I'm going to talk with you about 1 of those stupid interview mistakes; I use a goofy title for it but you will recognize a pretty quickly. I call it, "Sounding like a Mexican song." When they ask you a question about what you did for your firm or what you do for your firm, this is what you sound like--" I, I, I, I." All you do is talk about yourself. You don't put yourself into the context of how you work with your coworkers. You don't give people a bigger picture of where you fit in.

For example, let's say you are a staff level individual. You are answering the question like, "So, what you do for your firm?"

"I work as a team that is responsible for… The overall group does such and such. My piece of that is .. This. As such, I work with a small subset of individuals that has a budget of X number of dollars that is responsible for... blah blah blah blah." Do you get weren't coming from?

You don't say, "I do this. I do that." You don't just simply say, " I, I, I, I"

The idea is to always contextualize yourself. The people of the picture of where you fit

If you're in executive, you can say that you took over responsibility for a group that is responsible for. You can also say "I manage a slice of business that does such and such. As such, I have responsibility for a budget of $500 million. I have a staff of X number of people that is broken up by.." They you start defining your department. "I have some really talented people working for me who have really helped me look good. Obviously, I provide leadership for this group. But the fact of the matter is that I've hired some very good people and they are individuals who understand what I want and go out and deliver. My job is to really understand what is needed so I interact with people in the business unit so they feel attended to..." Again, do you get weren't coming from here

It is not just about "I I I I." It is about giving people a picture of where you fit in, which are role responsibilities are, size of the budget, size the department... It's all about giving people a sense of size and scope.
