The Screening Interview

Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make things so much easier for people related to their job search, and much more. Today, I’m gonna be talking with you about one of the seven deadly mistakes, one of the Seven Deadly Sins people make when interviewing.

And the first mistake is not connecting the dots between your experience and the role they’re trying to fill. This is a huge mistake because it shows the interviewer that you haven’t done your homework to prepare for the interviewer. They want to know why your experience, why you’re qualified to do the job, and how your skills or experience match up to the requirements. You haven’t made this easy for them. They believe that if you don’t tee it up for them, it isn’t an important part of your experience. And they prefer people who do what they need to have done all the time, and not as something ancillary to their primary tests.

So before your interview, take some time to really read the job description and understand what it is the company is looking for. Then think about your own experience, and how it can help you succeed in this role.

For example, if you’re applying for a job as a marketing manager, you might want to talk about your experience in social media marketing, if that’s what they’re looking for, instead of your experience with content creation or lead gen.

The more you can connect your dots between the experience and the role, the more likely you are to make a good impression on an interview.
