EP 1306 How do you treat an interview with a Former boss? Do you do anything different?

Summary

Hi! I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm the head coach for www.jobsearchcoachinghq.com. I was on call with someone. I thought would be interesting to record this. We had a conversation about talking with your former boss. He has an interview scheduled with the former boss that was to hire him for a particular role. He asked me, "How should I prepare for the conversation?"

The short answer to this is that he is a friend and he is considering hiring you. As a result, he is going to evaluate and assess you. Don't think of this is just to friends talking. Think of it is that he has a responsibility to evaluate and assess you. Even though he is giving you a thumbnail about what the conversation is going to be about, you might just follow up by saying, "Hey, it's just so good to hear your voice." Yada yada. You chat for a little bit and then switch the conversation to, "I know you give me an idea of what you are looking for. I want to go into more of a deep dive with you. Would you tell me a little bit more about the position involved in what I can do to help?" That takes it into the realm of the professional where it needs to be.

You may be a leader in an organization, but here, you are still a job hunter. You may be friends with this person, but you are still a job hunter. This is true no matter where you are in the process, whether you're the junior individual and interviewing with someone who you went to college with and dormed with or, as was the case here, you are a leader talking to another veteran leader talking about returning to an organization that you previously left to work as a consultant working at a client.

No matter what, you are always being scrutinized. People are going to measure you for the role AND, in this particular case, there was another subject in that the position involved wasn't really one that he was looking for. This was a fun little twist to the situation. You see, he's really looking for a senior role and here they wanted him to come in at a different level because it is consulting organization. What do you do if a CEO role opens up and the question comes up? You tell them you will help them higher your replacement, make yourself available, introduce them to recruiters who you know and try to make the transition as smooth as possible, diffuse that is a potential issue and try to move on.

EP 1214 I discuss several more things  you should do for your next video interview.

Summary

I thought I would do a podcast today about video interviewing based upon a message and exchange I had with an old friend of mine, Joe Rejeski, from AvenueX Group in New York.

Joe has been using a service that helps his firm evaluate people who are being considered for a position. He offered a few ideas that I thought would be really helpful.

1. Pay attention to your background. I have a messy office from the standpoint of what you could see on camera, you can't see that I have a lot of stuff on my desk right now and that behind me on the coffee table there is even more stuff. Be aware of your backdrop when you set things up.

2. Webcam quality s much better than mobile phone quality. If you can, put yourself in a position where you can use a webcam. If you can't, understand that your video quality won't be as good.

3. Even if you are interviewing on the weekend, dress professionally from the waist up.

4. Don't bring a cup of coffee to the interview. Sipping coffee during the interview doesn't look well for you.

EP 1199 What do I mean by, “run your race,” in the context of job hunting and your career?

Summary

When I think of job hunting, frankly, it is like walking into a casino for most of you and sitting there the tables. You don't really know the rules. Thus, you are easy pickings for the casino. Even if you do know the rules and how to play the game, most of the time, the casino is going to make money on you no matter what.

Understand that the way job is stacked right now, you're playing a game that is rigged against you. What can you do?

Obviously, you can refuse to comply, but eventually you'll be chewed up by the system. You can refuse to comply by refusing to apply for job through an applicant tracking system until you spoken to hiring manager. It's an easy way to do it on your room.

The real thing though is about attitude. You see, the Attitude that you have been instilled with is the one being the compliant employee. And fitting in. And doing what is demanded of you every step along the way to the point where you are a little cube you're being fitting amongst other cubes. In job hunting, Ideally from your vantage point, it is best to learn what the rules are and play your own game. Let me give you an example from sports.

Football teams. Basketball teams. Baseball teams There are lots of set plays That are involved. There are also lots of situations that they practice in order to put themselves in the position to put themselves in a position to execute the basic game plan, right? There is a lot of creativity and originality within those frameworks. You need to find the place for organizations respect you and your unique way of doing things.

If you want to be a drone, by all means… Do it. You can have messages piped into your head all day about being compliant doing what is demanded of you. Shut up. Do we tell you to do and don't have any original thoughts. Or, you can do things in your particular way and be sought out by firms. You see, LinkedIn is 1 of the greatest tools that we have in our modern times because it allows firms to reach out to you and for you to call more shots.

Remember, they are hunting for talent. If they want a person to fit into a box, that doesn't mean that you want to fit into a box, does it? I want to think in terms of a race. The race has a finish line – – the end of your career. How do you want to run the race? Do you know what could happen along the way? Do you know how to get you from where you are now and how to get to the finish line?

If you don't, you need to learn quickly. Let me give you an example. I was doing online coaching call I blab.im on the platform was still up. It is on YouTube as "No BS Coaching: Play Your Game Big!" At the end of the day, this person wants to move in the direction for their career a little bit differently than the obvious path. I spoke about informational interviews and you said, "Yeah, I have one scheduled." I asked him, "How about 5? How about 10? You can't just take one person's viewpoint for how to get to the finish line. And, even if the viewpoint is right, maybe it is right for you."

One thing I've learned over the course of the years in recruiting is that everything works in job search. It never works as well as we would like or as often as we would like but, at the end of the day, everything works. You may be turned down for a bunch of jobs but, eventually, you will find one that fits you. If it's your drive. It fits your ambition. If it's the kind of career goals that you have. Run the race in your particular way. Don't worry about what recruiters might tell you because a lot of them will tell you that you doing it all wrong. "It is a terrible mistake you're making! GROAN!"

Your job is to make a work recruiter a fee. YYour job is to make the corporate recruiter happy. Your job is to make yourself happy. Don't sell out your own ambitions for what the company wants.

Tough Interview Questions: How Do You Use LinkedIn? | JobSearchTV.com


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to go beyond the obvious answer to the more subtle and powerful one.

Summary

The obvious answer isn't the right answer but you want to acknowledge it.
The obvious answer is, "I have a profile on LinkedIn and have used it in a way that allowed your firm to find me (or the recruiter who found me to refer me to you)." Part of this becomes building reputation and brand. But the best answer takes this part and goes a completely different route.
"But the other thing that I use it for (and this is where the best answer goes to) is use it as an intelligence resource. For example, on a project I did 2 years ago (or on a task I had assigned to be 2 years ago), where I didn't really know much about what I was being asked to do, I was able to use my network, not just simply for my 1st level connections, but to use an introduction from my 1st level connection to 3 people who let me do some research with them and pick their brain and the shortcut the amount of time that was spent on this project. From what could've been 2 weeks to 2 days. So, I use it as an information resource that helps me in my work day in and day out."
So, what I've done is acknowledge the obvious answer, but you also go into greater depth and talk about how you actually use it for intelligence.
By the way, if you're not using it this way, you really should be.

Tough Interview Questions: Do You Take Work Home With You? | JobSearchTV.com


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers a quick, direct, no BS way to answer this question.

Summary

Let's go right to 1 of those tough interview questions that are designed to make it seemed foolish. Ready.? Most of these questions like it's not that difficult, but there is a mistake people make. I get to that in a second. Here is the question.

So, do you take work home with you? Tell us! Tell me! Hurry!

And it's all designed to exert a certain amount of pressure on you. At this point, when most people answer the question, they drone on and on and they give this lengthy answer. They give examples. They talk about stuff. They bore the other person when a simple, concise answer would really work much better than a lengthy one.

Here is a simple, concise answer. “I want you use you know I understand the importance of deadlines and deliverables and, him the fact of the matter is, there are times when you have to take work home with you to meet those deadlines. So, yes, of course, I do that. But in terms of a steady requirement, most of my work hasn't really required this as a steady thing. Do I do it as needed? Absolutely.”

So, I see this is the easiest way to do it – – short, simple, to the point. Don’t going into long stories. Don't tell about this time in “04 when , you took work home with you and how it rescued everyone. Just give me a straight, no BS answer that says, “Sure, I understand that there are times when deadlines are tight and you take work home with you . . . But etc.

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I and referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I hunted leaders and there staff for organizations for more than 40 years.

Let's talk about 1 of those tough interview questions that causes people to sweat bullets, become all nervous and none of them are particularly hard. My thinking is that it might be useful prepare for everything, to hear some the questions, get some ideas of answers, do it in your particular way, but try to work within the framework I am going to offer

So, today's tough question is, “So, tell me what you might've learned from 1 of your non-work experiences that you think is helping you?”

So, this is an invitation to talk about volunteerism that you are involved with. So the ideal way to the frame your answer is, if you are in management, you want to talk about not managing, but just doing and being reminded of how people think from “the doer perspective” and thus how it affects you favorably when you're leading.

If you are a staff level individual and you have an opportunity to lead, it's in appreciation for the effort that goes into leadership. So, the idea is to flip the 2 situations around.

Again, as an is a manager and above, the reminder of what it's like to be a doer. As a doer, you want to then to talk about the things that you learn about being a manager, a director . . . Being In some sort of leadership role that you normally haven't gotten yet at work and are aspiring to.

Ending the Interview Right! (VIDEO)


In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the way to end a job interview and leave a great impression.

Summary

Let's talk about ending the interview. You've been sitting with them for about 45 minutes to an hour, or you've finished a phone call but, more often than not, this scenario is going to come up in the in-person interview.

Let's say your meeting with one person on your agenda; let's say your meeting with five. Whoever the final person is, they are going to be prepared to usher you out the door. Your final words to this person need to demonstrate your interest in the role. Why? Often this is used as a tiebreaker in a hiring manager's mind.

Here's how it works. They had decisions to make and will decide between you and several other people. How will they choose? Skills, obviously, come into consideration. There are a variety of different attributes they are looking for and personality they are evaluating you for.

Often, there is a very fine line between people. One of the things that starts to happen is managers don't want to make offers that they are not sure are going to be accepted. So, one of the tiebreakers they use in their own mind (after all, it's not like are sitting there going through the checklist, but sometimes it is on the checklist), is whether they think this person will accept our offer if we make a fair offer? Are they interested in the job? Do they want to come to work for us

A manager doesn't want to go through interviewing people multiple times for a job; they just want to be in a situation that if they extended an offer is going to be accepted and they will be done with the job.

Thus, your goal at the end of an interview is to demonstrate interest. So, with the last person you meet, you have to make it clear to them that you are interested in the role. It could be saying something as simple as, "I just want you to know how interested in this role I am. I just it will be a great opportunity for me and I would love to work for you." Or end it by saying the same thing plus, "I would love to work for your organization."

These are words that demonstrate sincere interest. You can't say this like it is canned speech. This is one of these times were acting needs to be part of your delivery.

It can be something as simple as, "I just want you are interested I am in the position and look forward to hearing from you about next steps." Or, "I would love to work for you," or, "I would love to work with Suresh," or "I would love to work with Joe," or Sharon or whomever the first name is some of that you met with. "I think this would be a great opportunity. I would love to work for themI would love to work here.I think there is a lot I could do here."

A lot depends upon the role. If you're an executive, there is a different language that you might use.

"I think this offers a great challenge. I have a few ideas of things that like to do but that's for another day."

"My mind is racing." Like I said, there's a different language. You can't make it sound like a canned speech. Again, this is one of these times were acting is a part of what you are going to be doing in your delivery.

Leave them knowing that you are interested. You can go so far as to ask, "what standing between you and extended an offer? Is there any additional information you need for me?"

You can do this on your way out the door so it doesn't appear to be part of any formal interview. Just let them know that you are interested, asked them for the job so that you ended in a way that lets them know of your interest.

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter tells you the two dirty words never to use in an interview.

Summary

I just got off the phone with someone. I was due to conversation with the worms evaluating their resume for client of ours. It was really interesting because in the course of talking with her, she used 1 of the 2 dirty words of interviewing. What are the 2 words that you should never use in a conversation.

Do you want to know what those 2 words are? I'll tell you what the 2 words are and then give you examples.

The 1st dirty word. Ready? Only. As in, "I have only done this," Or, "I have only done that." Here is the 2nd dirty word. Light. "I have light experience with.... "Whatever it is.

Tell people what you know and what you've done. If it is sufficient, great! If it isn't, that's okay, too. When you use words like only or light, but it tells the employer is, "I don't have a lot of confidence in my ability to answer questions on the subject. Could we go on to something else, please?" After all, what does light mean anyway. In this context? When you use only, what are you really saying?

Drop those 2 words from your vocabulary. Like I said, tell people what you know and what you have done. If it is good enough, terrific. If it isn't, you have been forthright. You have been accurate. Your no risk of being fired when they hire you, because they're not hiring you.

So, like I said – – 2 dirty words – – only and light.
