EP 1419 Job hunters make a huge mistake in a negotiation with firms and through recruiters.

Summary

I just want to speak to you today about what is is the biggest salary negotiation mistake job. I want to preface this by saying recruiters-- agency recruiters, corporate recruiters, all understand the principle taught from the movie Glenn Gary Glenn Ross, a fabulous movie and play; you've never seen it, watch it sometime. It helped launch Alec Baldwin as an actor. As I just said, there is a scene where you hear Baldwin talks about “the ABC of sales” and ABC stands for, “ always be closing.”

Employers and recruiters understand that you don't close at the end of the sale. You close from the from the very beginning. I am not talking but heavy-handed closing; it can be a very gentle close. So, it really starts off, “what are you looking for in the way of salary? How much are you making,” and how they respond to that knowing what the salary ranges for the position. So, for you is the job hunter, the mistakes you make are really in a series that leads up to the big 1.

The 1st 1 is you don't have an idea of your value in the marketplace. So, what you decide to do is walk in and believe that you are earning X number of dollars and you accept the notion that you are only entitled to Y number of dollars on top of that. That's because you don't research the market for what you do and, as a result, you walk in like a babe in the woods and accept the fact that . . . Well, you don't even notice the fact that they are trying to elicit information from you about what you're looking for. Thus, because you don't have knowledge, you are acting in an ignorant manner, you offer up a salary range because you've always been coached to give a range, right? That’s because you don't really know the market, you take other peoples’ word who have an ulterior motive in the scenario and accepted what they tell you as what your value is. You haven't done wrong on homework or done your own research. You have listened to the recruiter. You listened to the corporation and they've identified the value for you as “that's the price that they're willing to pay” through the corporate side or, from the agency's side, that's the price that they know their client is willing to pay. So, you are getting boxed in at the beginning.

So, most of you arrive and give a salary range. I’m just going to pick two numbers arbitrarily-- $150 to $160 or $100 to $120 and, if you are looking at a job ad and you saw there is a salary range there (I’m going to pick 100 K to 120 K going forward), you zero in on the 120, right and rightly so. You see the range; you want to get the most that you can, but they do the same thing and the result winds up being, when you the offer a range of 100K - $220K, the employer hears the bottom number, knowing that that would be okay and they are always going to be driving you to that point.

So, the mistake really comes down to don't talk about a range. Know your value. Know what the market pays for what you do and, as a result, ask for that number. Be prepared that, it's possible, that they might come in little bit less and that's okay. At the end of the day, what you want to be doing is knowing your real value, knowing what you should be getting, asking for it right then at the beginning of the process, not waiting until the very end when they have already established what they are going to pay and it may not satisfy you.

EP 1342 I talk about the importance of talking yourself down from the cliff and how you should never split the difference.

I wanted to talk with you today about the importance of keeping your wits about you, especially as you go into a negotiation.

I'm sure you realize that there have been times where you've lost your cool, gotten into arguments with people, and just felt like destroying them. Maybe you've done it with your wife, husband or partner, maybe with a coworker or friend, and you started dredging up things from your collective past and started throwing it in their face. You start making threats.

How did that work for you? Did you really think that you would get what you wanted?

The result that you've gotten is that you thrown a tantrum. You were a big baby in an adult body but you are still a baby.

If you're trying to get your way in a negotiation with someone, if someone has said or done something that takes you off and you just lose it, I want to encourage you to just pull back a little bit and say, "I'm sorry. Something that you just said activated an old memory for me. Can we start this from scratch? I apologize."

The reason is you're just not going to win. All you're going to do Is cause hatred and resentment. You're not going to get your way.

That's why it's important to keep your wits about you and pulling back the reins at times.

You can even try to remember whose voice that is. Whose voices that that set you off? What's the memory you have of the similar situation back in time?

If this is a negotiation where money is involved, unless you concede the point there, you will concede money in the negotiation. And if they throw their hands up in the air and say, "Okay. Let's split the difference," never ever split the difference because the person who is offering that is getting their way. They are trying to make you think that it is "fair," And, frankly, it isn't.

Again, pull yourself back from the abyss, that crazy moment, when you lose it. Get a hold of yourself. Never ever split the difference when you are neg

Avoid Discussing Salary | No BS Hiring Advice


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains why it is not in your firm’s interest to show your hand before extending a job offer to someone.

Summary

Today, I want to offer you some no BS hiring advice in the realm of salary negotiation with candidates. Now, as an HR professional business owner, manager, at an organization that's involved with hiring, negotiations are always one of those tricky issues. You want to get someone for the least amount of money, but you also want to make them happy. So, you don't want to necessarily squeeze them. But you also don't want to overpay because, after all, you've got a budget to contend with.
Often, hiring managers, HR professionals, you know you are you going into a negotiation with a candidate or with someone like me, a recruiter who's representing a candidate (NOTE: I no longer do recruiting) and you get to a point in the negotiation where you reveal your hand about what you're willing to pay for someone. Probably, not a good idea.
Now, let me break it into two parts. First part is with a candidate. By telling them, "the most I'm willing to pay is such and such . . . " I'm not talking about we're screening someone ithe very beginning. I'm talking about at the pre-offer phase when you're really in the negotiation phase about salary . . . what you've done is basically tell them this is the max I'm willing to pay and, if you offer them five cents less, they are going to go, "What happened? You said you'd pay to such and such but you came in less." It impacts your ability to make them happy, make it attractive for them to join . . .What have you.
You're better off in those kind of situations offering a little bit less than what you're prepared to offer. So, in this way, if you come in higher than that, they get a little bit more enthusiastic. One of my clients has that built into their offer scenario where they talk about less. If they get the person for less, great! But, at the same time, was prepared to go a few dollars higher. They are able to show, time and again, that this is a tactic that, for them, saves some money and, if necessary, they are already slotted for more so there's no sweat.
The second part of this is in talking with recruiters like I was, I worked very closely with my clients. I don't play games. Some recruiters play games and, you know, the issue comes down to you're about to make an offer to someone. They will know how much are you going to offer? How much are you going to offer?
What they're trying to do is close the candidate for you and that sounds great . . . but if you tell them, "well, I can go up to (I will pick a number of random) $10 and you offer them $7.50, or, let me be clear about that, you're prepared to go to 10, but initially you want them to to offer them $8, so, if they say yes to $8, great!
If you need to, you'll go to $10, you tell that to a recruiter, they're not going to try to hard because they know they've got the 10 locked up and their fee is contingent upon how much you want to pay. And, I'll simply say that, especially for contingency recruiting firms, you know, it's better not to let them in on the numbers. The executive search which I try to do with many of my clients even though, often, I operate on a contingency basis, I'm working for my institutional customer.
Yes, I have to deliver a candidate to you but, you know, at the same time, I'm trying to be fair. I want to have that strong relationship with you and I don't play games. So, if you tell me you're prepared to go to $10 but you'd like me to offer $8, I'm going to do that. I'm going to work toward closing it. I've done that many many times. But ,you know, for most recruiters, you can hold back that extra information because, otherwise, there's no financial incentive for them, particularly in the contingency world.
So, better to hold back. Don't always be so revealing about the numbers you're prepared to pay. Make the recruiter work that much harder in order to close the sale. It saves your organization money.
Hey, it's not your effort that's going into this.It is the recruiter's and, if you burn out one, there's gonna be another one who's gonna replace them. And, frankly, if they're doing deals with you, they're going to keep working. So like I said, hold back on what the numbers are going to be so this way, you know, you're not just giving away extra money unnecessarily.

Asking for More Money | JobSearchTV


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers eight simple to follow ways for you to ask for more money.

If you have watch my videos on salary negotiation, I try to cover a whole range of different options from the hardball to the softball. The show goes into the softer category which, frankly, I prefer for most of you because I don't think most of you can be hardball negotiators. In sales, it's different. There, I'm going to push you to be a tough negotiator because that is part of what they will be measuring you for. For most of you, however, softball, the gentle approach, not getting into arguments and confrontations, but presenting this as an "ask," and not a demand is far more effective.

When you get the offer, here is how you respond.

"WOW! That's terrific! Thank you so much. I'm so excited! But I must in all candor tell you that I love this firm the opportunity, but I have several other offers at the same salary level or in the same range." Then you shut up because the next thing that they're going to follow up with is, "So what do you plan on doing?"

"I need to sit with this a little bit. I'm hoping you could do a bit better to match my highest offer."

Understand that for most organizations, a 5 or $10,000 improvement is not going to break the bank. Even if they move by $2000. That's money in your pocket, not theirs, right? You don't want to get into arguments. You don't want to get into confrontations. You want to make it seem like you are agonizing a little bit.

"I have other offers in the same area. I was hoping you could match my highest offer." Understand, on your side, you need to be prepared to talk with them about what the number is and once they match and you have to be prepared to say, "Yes." There is no back and forth you anymore. It is done.

Also, understand that 5 or $10,000 is okay. $30,000, unless you are an executive level is not in the same ballpark. It is considered a wide difference in most organizations and their budget approach.

Recognize the difference here. Then, if they just increased by a little bit, you can respond by going, "I need to think about it. Can I get back to you later in the week?" When you get back to them, "this has been so hard. Is there any progress that you can make? Any improvement you can make?"

They may respond by saying, "No, that's it." Or, "that's really the best that we can do." Then you need to be prepared to give an answer.

No matter what, the approach is just to very simply give them the idea that you want to say yes, but they need to improve the offer. Then, be quiet. It's really that simple.

Your Best Salary Negotiation Strategy | No BS Hiring Advice

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm referred to as the Big Game Hunter because I've hunted own leaders and staff organizations from more than 40 years. I'm back with some more no BS hiring advice to help you do an even better job of recruiting and hiring people, whether your an HR professional ,hiring manager or small business owner.
So, the advice I have today is about salary negotiation and the simplest advice I want to offer you is don't offer your top number right away. Hold on to a few dollars from it– –$5,000 $10,000, whatever you think is appropriate depending upon the level of the job. So, this way the job hunter who believes that they can negotiate to get progress off of the original offer feels like they have a victory.
They feel good about themselves. They feel good that you cared enough to up the offer to get them. And it was already slotted into what you were planning for. And the other thing is some people will say, "yes." So, they're just very calmly say, "we're making you an offer. The offer is for such . . . " Justlike you would for any offer . . . But hold on to a few dollars from the offer and try to enter into a negotiation with them.
Don't say, "well,this is negotiable" . But just, very simply, extend the offer, see if they accept and then you have more money available in case you need to go a little bit higher.

EP 1218 Try this little trick if you are having trouble negotiating for yourself.

Summary

This is a tip for when you're struggling with a negotiation. Maybe you haven't done a lot of negotiating before. Maybe you are just afraid of negotiating. A lot of people are. Here’s a little trick I want to suggest. This came from a recent conversation with my mother-in-law.

She was selling a place in Florida; she got and offer for as little bit less than she wanted. You have to move out during “the season” which was the big thing for her. She wouldn’t be able to get her car back up north in time.

So, I suggesting that you pretend she was negotiating for one of her grandkids and that she was trying to look out for the grand kid and what their interests are? Could she do that? You bet you she could! And that's where I lead to you.

If you were negotiating for someone else-- a friend, if you were negotiating for a parent who was ill and speaking with the doctors, you can do that, right? I am going to suggest that you treat yourself like that parent that you are negotiating for and negotiate on their behalf.

Don't personalize this. Negotiate for the other person. Drive the best deal that you can. As was the case here with my mother-in-law, she was able to do this pretty easily once she got that trap out of her mind of, “OH! THAT FEAR!!!, “ that sometimes become so pervasive and persuasive that you might do it wrong and blow the deal or what have you.

Trust yourself. You'll do fine, especially if you act like you are negotiating for someone else.
