EP 1453 There are number of things someone can do to stand out in a crowded field.  Most of them take time that is well worth spending.

Summary

Great question I got! "How do you stand out in a crowded field?"

The problem with answering questions like this is that people want instant results. Sorry, folks, it doesn't happen overnight. It takes time. You see, when advertisers want to influence you, 99% of the time, you are not influenced by the 1st viewing of the commercial, the 2nd view of the commercial or the 22nd viewing the commercial. It is a process of time, right? That's what happens. That's what advertisers do.

The truth of the matter is, the way you stand out is over the course of time. Most people think that they write the best resume is absolutely perfect, and they apply to a job as a good boy or good girl through the applicant tracking system, they are going to stand out. They look for a magic bullet to stand out by diving into an ocean with lots of fish. You don't stand out that way. You have to go a different route.

Here are a few things I jotted down for how to stand out in the crowded field:
1. Branding yourself in developing a reputation that other people know about. This is something that takes time. I have done other articles, videos and podcasts about branding. I'm not going to go into that now.
2. Start doing informational interviews. These can be with people that you know or that people who you know know (2nd level from you). That takes time.
3. Get to know hiring managers. Sometimes you can get introduced. Sometimes you meet them through associations or organizations were you or they have an opportunity to meet one another. There are a lot of different ways to meet hiring managers.
4. References on LinkedIn. Do you have 2 references or 222 references? You may think that's ridiculous but look at my profile. I have tons of recommendations and tons of testimonials for work that I do. Why can't that be you? There are people who you know who would be very happy to attest to your competence.
5. Activating your network. You think that it takes one action to get your network ACTIVATED! Not true at all. 1st of all, most of you don't cultivate a network. It starts with what you do when you don't need them in order to cultivate them so that when you actually need them they are willing to be activated. Take action. Think about it. In your life, forget about your work life, just in your life in general, when people ask you for a favor, and you hardly know them, when people ask you for a favor what you actually do for them? Sometimes you do something, but most of the time you don't. That's the reality to it. You are no different. Just because you are looking for job, you think people are going to stop in their tracks and take lots of action to help you. It doesn't work that way, does it? You need to cultivate your network to activate your network.
6. In order to stand out, never EVER apply for job to an applicant tracking system. I mentioned this before. If you were swimming in the ocean that had 1 million fish unit, how easy is it to stand out? Not particularly easy, is it? However, if you are a small pond and the relatively few fish, it is a lot easier to stand out under those circumstances. Remember, if you apply for job to an applicant tracking system and doing the good boy and good girl thing (being a nice little puppy and doing what you're told to do), you are making a big mistake. You're so much better off getting to the hiring manager. You can find them through LinkedIn. You can find them 3 people you know. You can find them to people who you know who know other people who may know this person. Do what recruiters do and ask for help. "Who do you know who knows someone who works at…" Or "Who do you know who knows someone who works at (fill in the blank) who might know the person I'm looking for?". "Do you know anyone who works in accounting at so-and-so?" Asked for recommendations. You ask, "Who do you know who…" Ask it of everyone that you know. Ask it of the hiring managers that you get together with. You have no idea who the people you know know who you don't know.

Just remember that 70% of all positions are filled through networking and 70% of those 70% (or 49%) are filled as a result of introductions to people who you didn't know at the beginning of your job search. As I mentioned before, these are the people that your network knows that you don't know.

Those are number things that you can do to stand out.

I discuss the second biggest mistake executives make in their approach to networking.

As someone who's been in the search business for what seems like 100 years, I run into executives all the time who commit many many mistakes with their job search. And I did a another video about the #1 mistake I see executives making, Other people do this well, but executives doing it prolifically.

Here is another one mistake that executives make and the real big one here is that you don't network! Really that simple.

You so immersed in your job that you don't take time on a regular basis to build relationships. Now, if you watching this video or listening to this podcast, you may be immersed in a job search. So it may be to late to head off this problem. But, I want you to think that after you get this position, while you doing this search, you always take time to network.

"You know, I'm too busy."

Well now you're not busy because you are out of work and do you want to be out of work or do you want to be able to easily activate the #1 way that people find positions and that is an effective network.

As I said in mistake #1, lurching from networking and networking only when you need people, shows you as a mooch. That all you care about is yourself. Building relationships that come between the interview cycles when you were there to help people, where you are available to offer advice, where you can be a mentor to others in their searches and where offerleads to people graciously, not as though they're dragging it out of you, will go a long way toward setting you up in the next search.

So, again, don't lurch from networking situation to networking situation while you learned from search to search. Always be networking.

EP 1075 So many people make this core networking mistake . . . it isn’t funny.

Summary

I thought I would do a short video about what I call casting Internet in all the wrong places.

When people are networking, they are networking with people just like them. They are hoping to be introduced to people who play bigger, people at a higher level than them who make decisions. This is true in job hunting as well as in business. The result was that being that the people that you talk to aren't able to make a decision. In addition, often they don't know many people who are decision-makers outside of their own organization. So, what's the point?

If you been to a Chamber of Commerce meeting or to a business group, you run into this problem all the time. I'll even go so far as to say run into this with LinkedIn. With LinkedIn, I get tons of connection requests. Of the 17,000 or so people connected to me, I reached out to probably fewer than a thousand of them. They reached out to me because I have such a powerful brand – – The Big Game Hunter.

I understand that their version of networking is to gain access to my network, but they're not really contacting anyone there, and they aren't asking me to introduce them to anyone in my network, either. So, what's the point?

What's the point of speaking to people or reaching out to people who can't help you? What's the point of reaching out to people who won't help you. Because all they are doing is going, "Give me. Give me. Give me." And what's amazing is that you are back there saying and doing the same thing. "Give me. Give me. Give me I need. I need." Is not exactly a relationship that's going to work, is it?

After all, both of you are so busy grasping, "Please help me. I need your help, please. Help me!" It just doesn't work, does it? If it was working, you wouldn't be watching this video would you?

I want to encourage you to do something a little bit different. I would encourage you to help other people before you ask for help. This requires investment of time and trust on your part that if you give, you will receive. I know the business networking group, BNI, as this is the core philosophy of the group. I also know that in job search and other fields as well, it works, too.

I want to encourage you to think, not in terms of, "Give me. Give me. Give me." Instead, think in terms of giving first in order to receive.

Then, the next thing is to start operating at a higher level. Don't just reach out to people who are like you.

1. Think in terms of networking to a higher level where you can assist them. I know for myself. I met a lot of very successful people over the years and, at times, I've just offered a gift of advice 2 people who are struggling in some way at a certain stage of their life. They come back to me and allow me to be of service to them in their organization and thus have a written business many times over.

Again, if you are operating at your level. Often, you are not getting to people who write checks., You are getting to people who have to go hat in hand to present your case to someone. It reminds me of the situation where I was coaching someone recently. They are trying to build the business and they have to go to someone who has to be in contact with procurement. Invariably, procurement is going to say no. Why? Because that's the habit that they operate with.

"Fill out this form and make 47 different copies of it. Send it back to us and will get back to you in about a year."

What's the point of doing all of this? You have to get to real decision-makers and network your way to them.

Again, networking in the wrong places may feel good temporarily, but if you're not getting results, what's the point? Why are you engaged in that effort if the result is going to be just a bunch of people smiling, with drinks in their hand, all saying, "Do you know anyone? Okay." "Do you know anyone? Okay." "Do you know anyone? Okay." Doing that for an entire evening. UGH!

How to End a Networking Conversation | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP1424 Sometimes you’re at a networking event and you find it is time to end your conversation. Here are a few ways to do it.

Summary

There comes a point in your chitchat where it's time to make the break. That you could blithely blab on, but, isn't it more effective to end the conversation when you know it's really over? There's a few ways that you can do it.

1st of all, you can say something to the effect of, "Hey! Can I introduce you to someone?" Then you introduce them to someone else in the room who spent some time with or who you happen to know.

In another situation, you might basically say, "Hey, I'm just to get another drink. Would you like something?" Then, when you come back with your drink, (or they can obviously say no) if they say, "No," you can respond by saying, "Good talking with you. I hope to see you around." If they would like something and bring it back to you, you can say, "While I was on line, I ran into someone excuse me, I need to chat with them."

The 3rd thing you can say is, "Can we exchange cards so that we can stay in touch." Normally, the card exchange is going to signal that you want to stay in touch and that's really the time to end.

There is 1 More Way that I think is the most blunt overt way of doing it. You say something along the lines of, "I have to use the restroom. I'm sure will have a chance to talk on another occasion. Have a great evening." They go off to the restroom.

There's a few different ways to in the conversation.

EP 1417 How do I turn down an invitation for coffee from the CTO of a firm?

Summary

Here's a fun question!

"How do I turn down a coffee invite from the CTO of a successful startup?" They go on to say, "I got an email invite from CTO of a software startup that was recently acquired. He mentioned looking up my profile/works online and was interested to talk to me over a coffee. I am, however, not looking for a change in job right now. How do I politely decline him while mentioning that I would like to be in touch with him / her and be able to get in touch when I am actively looking." They live in the Bay area.

I want to take this into a broader range of an answer and talk about how you respond to an invitation for coffee from someone who might be interested in talking with you about you . . Or might be interested in talking with you about them.

It goes back to the basic idea about networking. Why do you network? It's to build up relationships of the time, we might actually need help, they know, like, trust and respect you. Maybe the trying to build up a relationship in order to find out if there's something in your organization. I don't know anything about your experience or your level professionally so it could go either way, but the likelihood is that they are going to be talking about trying to recruit you.

A long time ago, I learned a wonderful lesson. It is the notion that the person who gets ahead isn't always the smartest or work the hardest (although those a great qualities to have). The person who gets ahead is the one who remains alert to opportunities. Sometimes those are internal to the organization, but more often than not, they are external.

Whether you are changing jobs or interested in changing jobs right now or not, developing relationship with the successful individual, someone who is further along the road and you are, can always pay off. To decline an invitation is really a goofy response.

Yes, you are happy. Walk in there as a happy individual who likes his work. Consider that you might like your work even more if you are pay $25,000 more than you are now would receive more options. Isn't that possible? I would tell you to go on this meeting.

If you really do want to decline, do so politely , but start off by asking, ". But the subject would be of our conversation?" Make them explain what the purpose of the meeting is, discuss dates and times to meet, but they continue by saying, "I want to be clear, I'm not out there actively looking for position." This way, you're not leading them on in any way.

I want to keep encouraging you to get out there and keep talking to people. After all, your network is your net worth. Developing relationships with someone NOW when you are not actively looking can only be profitable to you at some point in the future.

We grow up looking for friends to talk with share ideas with and make school tolerable . . . at least I did. We played sports together, walked to school and home together and sat in front of our buildings to talk with one another about life, the universe and everything.

In school, we couldn’t share . . . that was cheating.

At work, particularly once tech showed up on my desk, we worked by ourselves and occasionally collaborated. Most of the time, I worked on my own.

Yet we are more effective when we work together with others who have a common mission and intention.

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains the importance of being found and how to do it.

Summary

Today we're going to talk with you about how recruiters find people for their jobs. Now, again, this isn't about you finding them; it's about them finding you. That's because the bias that exists in recruiting is if they find you, if you they perceive you as a "passive job hunter," not one actively engaged in the job job search, you're a superior candidate. Why that is, is goofy and I'm not going to go into it now. I've done that in a different video.

I'll just simply say this is the bias that third party and corporate recruiters both have-- if they find you, you're superior to the active job hunter. So, how do they find people?

Statistically job boards full about 24 maybe 25% of all jobs. Employee referrals are filling about 27, 28%. So, networking to find someone, using a network is important because that's going to be the primary introduction point. Thus, when recruiters are looking for someone, those job boards are incredibly expensive.

Think about it for a second. If I said to you a job board license is $20,000 to search resumes, it doesn't sound like . . . and that's for one year, by the way. That doesn't sound like much. But let's say you're a large bank, and you're trying to fill positions. It's 10 different categories of jobs. You have two different people in each function recruiting for staff.

Start doing the math on this, folks, this is a $20,000 anymore, that's $400,000 because they're not going to share a license. They have to have it individually because, if one person's on the other one isn't. That's not how it works.

So, recruiters are going to free sources in order to find people. Yeah, LinkedIn is becoming progressively more expensive. It's a lot cheaper than using job boards. And what they're doing is searching profiles. Yes, in theory, if they're hired, if a recruiter or company has hired someone with a large network, you know, they can reach out to a lot of people, but it's only incomplete because they're limited to a certain number of inMails a month. It's the paid services that LinkedIn provides the gives them free range throughout the site.

So what are firms doing? They're using Google. Okay, I'll be politically correct here. They're using Bing and other search engines in order to find people. So what's the simplest way to get found? You make sure that you use the term "resume" as part of your search engine optimization. So, if you're posting a resume on a site (you could have it on your own site. You can put it on Tumblr. You could put it on Me, which is a summary site, which has like, name, address information about how to contact you. It's some good information that they can get. It's not a full resume) there's a lot of different free sites that you can work with in order to find the find the place to put your resume, and then optimize it using the term "resume."

You put your name in, you do "resume of," you do "job title," and I'm not talking about associate level three; they don't care about nonsense like that. They're looking for a functional title that describes your work. So, you put the functional title that describes what you do. Think keywords throughout; you put it there. In that way, which you are able to do is to promote yourself.

You get into LinkedIn groups so that people can find you. Have you done a presentation somewhere and have PowerPoints? Put it on a site like SlideShare, so that people find it. Have you done a professional video before? Well, put it on YouTube. You put it on Vimeo, you put it on a number of different video sites. Suddenly, you'll find the phone ring. Suddenly, there find people reaching out to you with opportunities that they wouldn't have that you wouldn't have heard about previously.

I also want to remind you, you keep these things up all the time, not just when your job search is going on. All the time. Because, as I said earlier, the person who gets ahead isn't always the smartest, or work the hardest. People get ahead by being alert opportunity. If you're doing a great job at your next firm and there's a knock at the door and someone's offering you a better opportunity, you better listen, because that could be the stepping stone to a huge, huge move.
