Stupid Networking Mistakes: Not Networking Intergenerationally

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
It doesn’t matter where you are in your career. This is a common networking mistake.

Stupid Networking Mistakes: Thinking Email Is Good Enough

This is one of those stupid networking mistakes that happens to everyone. It’s particularly bad for those who are older. But it happens with those younger, who tend to stay within their lane and don’t really network intergenerationally.

Now, for older workers, the issue comes down to do you network with people younger than you, people who were on your staff or in staff roles as you were progressing up the ladder. Now, as a 50+-year-old worker, you’re in a situation where your people, and your network are starting to age out. Some of them are retiring. And they’re not really available to you any longer. But the ones younger, are the ones who are still aspiring,. They are still growing. They’re growing into leadership roles where they might be able to hire you for either staff or consulting roles.

For those of you who are junior, if you stay in your own lane and only talk to people who are your contemporaries, eventually, the same thing is going to happen to you as is happening to your seniors. Your people are going to age out and even while you’re in this aspirational category, while you’re still trying to grow your career, you’re in a situation where you’re not talking to people who necessarily can hire you. Always look cross-generationally, always think in terms of building a network of different age groups so that in this way, you’re in a situation where people you know, like trust and can respect you will try and bring you on board.
