Stupid Networking Mistakes: Acting Like One of THOSE People | JobSearchTV.com

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Many too many people make this mistake and then find that their network is useless to them.

6 Tips for Successful Job Search Networking

Let’s talk about another one of those stupid networking mistakes that people make all the time. And this one I call acting like one of those people. What do I mean by that?

You never stay in contact with people except when you need them. You act selfishly. It’s always about you and what you need. You’re never there to help other people. And I don’t care if you’re at the most junior levels, or the most senior levels, this is a behavior that you need to stop.

Networking is about relationships. For example, what never happens on LinkedIn is that so many people never develop a relationship with the people that they are connected to (That’s air quotes around connected to), and thus, why did these people help you?

Same thing in your personal life. You work with them for two years. You don’t talk with them for 10 and you reach out to them.  You go, ‘Hey, I’m looking for a job. Do you think you can help me?’ Why would they help you? Because 10 years ago, you were a co worker and sat two rows over from them in the office and would wave at them from time to time. It doesn’t work that way, does it?

People want to, they want to help people that they’re in relationship with. And even then there are limitations as to what they’re willing to do, if you act like one of those people, you never will get the benefits of having had a relationship with someone in the past.

The idea is, stay in contact with people. Doesn’t have to be a big thing. It can be an email every nine months, 12 months, whatever it is. Something. And when you actually need them, they’re more likely to be responsive. Especially if you start off by saying, ‘hey, just wanted to stay in touch. What’as going on your life.’ You know, just want to check in with you and say ‘hi!’

You can do this by email, text, phone, whatever it is, but do something to remain in contact with the people from your past so that in this way. They’re more likely to help you when you need them.
