Numbers and Damn Numbers

Using A Surrogate to Follow Up
Someone shared their thoughts with me about the job market through YouTube. They pulled in data from LinkedIn with an emphasis on engineering in North Carolina. This is what he wrote:
I have been watching the numbers of applicants per job postings in LinkedIn and they have doubled about four months ago. The job postings that I look at daily are in the field of engineering. For example, it used to be 5 applicants for one entry level engineering job, now its 36 applicants for the same engineering job in less than a week.
I have been following engineering companies in North Carolina that require a bachelor’s degree in engineering. On the other hand, Costa Rica is having a serious recession! For example, for a sh*tty entry level job, in less than a day posted in LinkedIn they have over 300 applicants. Here in NC for that same job it will be about 3 applicants for 1 month of it being posted. We are not there yet thank God!
And for prospective college students, please do not get a computer science degree. It is so competitive in that field right now. I know universities are pushing that degree, saying there are a lot of jobs out there, but in reality, there are more computer science degrees than jobs. For a computer science job posting, the starting minimum is over 50 applicants! I am getting this information from LinkedIn, so I may be wrong. I have been checking daily since 2020, and numbers don’t lie.
I replied:
The only question about the NC numbers is whether students were starting to job hunt as they went into their final semester. I know there is a change that has begun.
