Stupid Resume Mistakes: Misconfigured Resumes | JobSearchRadio.com

I speak about a mistake almost everyone makes, particularly if they use page headers.​

Summary

I want to speak with you about another 1 of those stupid resume mistakes way too many people make so I can try to hate you all from doing it anymore. Now, on your screen, when you type the resume, particularly if you use the page header where you have your contact information on page 1 in an embedded header that’s going to wrap; the same header is going to appear on page 2, 3 etc., or if you use tables or frames or templates that use frames, often, when you send your resume to someone, it doesn’t lay out the same way on their screen as it does on yours.

Why? Different monitor. Different software. Different versions of the software. There are many reasons for it. At the end of the day, your job is to make your resume look good for everyone, not just simply for yourself.

Also, embedded headers (that area where you put your name, address, phone number, email address, stuff like that) when you use embedded headers, sometimes software that used to recontact you in the future (I don’t want to call it an applicant tracking system. Let’s call it a CRM) A CRM may have trouble parsing the information from your resume into their system so that they find it difficult to contact you in the future.

So, my advice, very simply, is to stop using embedded headers. Stop using tables in your resume. Don't use frames. Don't use templates that use frames. Instead, you are so better off, for example, instead of using the template, following the model of the template but just in it freestyle, instead of embedding a header. Just type in on the top of page 1. You don't need to put it on every page because, it's not like the old days, where people actually printed resumes out and they could lose a page. They had to staple the resume immediately or they could lose the page. Then they wouldn't know “where is page to of his resume!”

So, just, very simply, remember, other people use different monitors, different versions of the software that can figure your resume differently. Then, it looks awful and they take it out on you because, suddenly, they’ve got work to do on the resume and often say, “screw it. I’m just going to delete it.”

Stupid Job Search Mistakes: The Fixation With Your Resume | JobSearchTV.com


People torture themselves with having the perfect resume. Yet there are so many other things that go into a search beyond the perfect resume.

Summary

This is another one of those stupid job searches the that people make much too often.
You decide to look for a job and, immediately, start working on this perfect resume and never really do anything to take the time to figure out what kind of role am I looking for. Where did they fail in the last one? What was my bad choices at the last one? What do I want next?
They never practice interviewing. As a matter of fact, the first practice they'll have is when they get sufficiently desperate that they contact someone like me, let alone ever get around the figuring out how to do negotiation. They don’t understand the negotiation goes on every step along the way when you're interviewing with a firm. It's not just when they make the offer. It's when they're asking all those questions about money.
So the fixation with the resume really reveals an amateurish quality that people have with job hunting.
Yes, a resume will get you in the door and get introductions to a certain number of opportunities. But, you know, what does even better is your network. 70% of positions are filled as a result of your network and of the 70%, it's because there are people that your network knows who you don't that they can introduce you to.
So, fixating on the resume and spending so much time on it and who you should send it to is so dumb. Instead, get the resume into a minimal viable version of it that has lots of keywords that are embedded to it, get your LinkedIn profile up to speed.
As firms look for congruence between the resume and your profile, make your resume attractive. Move on from there. Seriously, move on from there.
So, as a matter of fact you're best off if you just hire an expert to write your resume. I'm not that person. I'm not fishing for that business. Find a resume writer. If you want a referral to one, I will include a link for that.
But the fact is fixating on your resume without understanding what you want, whether there is any training or knowledge you need to get what you want, without contacting your network for advice is a mistake.
You know, there's a podcast I listen to you earlier today where a guest talked about "I should know how to do this. I'm smart." You are an amateur, folks, In this area. Whether it's me, or someone else, get someone to give you some advice about job hunting.

EP 1296 Resumes are only looked at for a few seconds. What do people look for?

Summary

The question for today is, "We have all heard the stories, how few seconds people take to look at a resume. What 2 people actually look for in those few seconds?"

The question is actually very easy to answer. When we're looking at a resume, we are not looking at a full document. After all, when you think about it, when you look at a document on your screen. How much of the page shows up? Two thirds? Three quarters? That is about it.

So we are looking at a document that within two thirds or three quarters of the page ideally should be able to demonstrate some version of fit for a role.

I want to backtrack because you have a message area of your email and most people open, or have displayed on the screen and are using Outlook and have an additional pain available to them.

In an email, you want to indicate the position you are applying for. Maybe there is a job code or a title in the position description. If it is just the title provide something more because there could be multiple positions for the same title.

Stupid Resume Mistakes: Using Objectives | JobSearchTV.com


I discuss why putting one one your resume is a mistake.

Summary

I want to talk with you today about a stupid resume mistakes way too many people make. That's the notion of putting an objective in your resume. Objectives were created back in the Stone Ages of submitting resumes, pre-computer, where people just mailed resumes into apply for positions. So, there was a time disconnect between the time that the ad was written until the time that someone received the resume because computers didn’t exist. Faxes didn't exist. You mailed the resume.

If you were a recruiter, sometimes you had a messenger deliver it but massaging data in a resume was hard. You had to re-type it constantly. Many offices didn't have copy machines; they used mimeograph to do it. I know it's crazy how it was like back then. Oh-yeah, they used carbon paper if you were an individual mailing out a resume and the carbon paper would get on people's hands. It was awful! So, objectives became a way of communicating the nature the job you were looking for and they were actually paid attention to.

Today, objectives are looked at as ways that people use to disqualify themselves from consideration. So, for example, I see objectives that have a disconnect between what someone says they're looking for and what we job is; thus, it doesn't mesh. Why would I call this person who's telling me in their resume that they want to do such and such and have responsibility for such and such and my client won’t give it to them.

I try to be clear my advertising, or you in the referral that I gave to someone or in the information I gave to someone so that they can refer someone to me and I get this resume that has a disconnect.

Get rid of the objectives! All they do is disqualify you.

Instead of having an objective on the resume, use your actual body of the email to communicate the things that you want to communicate. Frankly, what you consider an objective, what most people consider objectives are irrelevant. No one cares what you're looking for. I hate to be that blunt but employers, for most of you, don't care what you or looking for; they care what they are looking for.

You can find out at the first interview if there is a disconnect between your objectives and theirs but don’t be proactive about it you may write it in a way or change your mind after the time of submission and have talk yourself out of an opportunity.

Instead, like I said, use the body of your email to communicate what you are looking for.

“I am forwarding my resume to you because I understand looking for such and such.” Then, you go into the second paragraph that outlines your relevant experience. Maybe, you set up the equivalent of an Excel spreadsheet where, in one column, you have the skill sought and where, in the second column, you have your experience; in the third column numbers of years of experience with it and how recently you have done it.

Then, you conclude by saying, “I am looking for a role where I (if you really want you communicate it). Frankly, I don’t think you need to. The first thing that an employer’s looking for is whether they can figure out quickly and easily whether you or qualified. Your cover email is going to do that. Your resume has to support that information and then your LinkedIn profile as to do it, as well.

So, get rid of the objectives. There is nothing good that comes out of it. No one will ever read your objective and say, “Huh! That’s interesting. We can give this to that guy. That’s fabulous! I think this woman would be great because . . . “

No one ever does that. Statistically, 95 times out of 100, they are going, “Jerk,” when they read the objectives. So, just don’t use one.

How to Give a Recruiter A Rough Time | JobSearchTV.com


I tell you what beats the heck out of me, why some of you are the cause, and how you can better results.

Summary

I I thought I would take a minute to just talk about my frustration. I’m really feeling beaten up today. Why? Because I’ve responded back to more than 50 resumes to find out where the person lives.

You see, you send resumes to me that have a name and a phone number. You apply for job. I don't know where you live and in my clients are not looking to relocate people. So, the result winds up being that I don't want to waste my time calling because all that’s going to wind up happening is that I do find that you're in a different place (as is the case with most individuals. They are hiding their location) and I have wasted time playing tag with you and not getting any results. And I’m still getting not results but I can’t call 50 people and play “phone tag” with you and then go into a five-minute conversation where you try to persuade me that you're going to go on interviews when you when you live in Chicago and you are going to fly to Dallas all the time. After all, all of these posts basically, “know relocation. No Visa transfers. No third-party recruiters”, etc. etc.

And you are going to try to persuade me that you are going to fly back and forth all the time? My client isn’t going to buy that and neither do I.

So, I’m just making a request here. When you're applying for a job and you sending out your resume, I understand no one wants to put themselves in the vulnerable position of risking identity theft. But your name, your city, State and zip code doesn't do that

By the way, the reason your phone number doesn't help is you're putting a mobile number there and mobile numbers these days are portable. So, let’s say your someone like me. I live in North Carolina and have a phone while I lived in the New York area. That 516 area code doesn't correlate with North Carolina, does it? The result is name and phone number don't cut it

I’m going to make one more point. Without the ZIP Code, employers and recruiters can't find you in the future. Why does that matter? When you're doing research and, yes, you’ve applied for a job, statistics say the job you applied for you not qualify for. So, when we want to get back in touch with you when we have something that fits (this is true employers, as well) we search by a couple of things. One of them is skills. The second is location.

Do you think we look we can look up location without a ZIP Code? Of course, not. Do you think your area code is going to be what we use? No. ZIP Code is precise. That’s why I am saying minimally puts city, State and ZIP Code on your resume. Save everyone a boatload of time. Help us help you. Really. Help us help you find work.

Having a resume in our database isn’t going to do it because we can never find you again. That true of employers, as well.

There are many mistakes people make with their resume. This is the big one–the #1 mistake people make with their resumes.

Summary

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm the head coach for JobSearchCoachingHQ.com and NoBSCoachingAdvice.com. I'm a career and leadership coach who works with people throughout the United States and sometimes beyond to help them find work more quickly, be more successful in their searches, be more successful with their new firms.
I thought I would talk with you today about the biggest mistake I see people make with their resumes. Now, I don't do recruiting anymore. I did it for more than 40 years so I've got that perspective from that and I see it reinforced time and again now that I do coaching.
So, here's what people do. They write one resume.
One resume.
And they don't think of their audience when they submit that resume.
So it's okay to have that generic resume for use on job boards. But if you're applying for a position, applying means that you've got an idea as to what this firm is looking for. Maybe you've seen an ad and you are applying. You've got to stop yourself right away and not just flip that resume to a firm like it's a burger at a fast food restaurant. You know, like you're just tossing that same resume over and over again? Because the result winds up being you're not getting the results that you want. It's not working. You need to tailor your resume to demonstrate that you fit the job.
So, what I'm going to encourage you to do is, if you applying for a position,you need to stop yourself from just submitting the same generic resume to them and, pause for a second and say, if an eight-year-old was reading this resume, could they see that I fit this job?" And if they can't, you've got to rewrite it by adding some things into it, maybe removing some others, to call attention to your experience.
Now., I'm going to pause for one second becauseI know some of you are going to say, " I can just put it in the cover letter." No you can't.
The reason for that is if you put it in the cover letter or in a cover email, people go to the resume and they look for some congruence with what you've written there. And if they don't see it, they think of this as being a minor part of your work and they're considering a major part of your responsibilities.
You see the disconnect there?They want someone who really knows it and, if it's not in the resume, they don't believe you know it. They think it's like an adjunct. So, you've got to get it into the resume. It can be as simple as one or two sentences added in and, maybe, you take one or two sentences out. This will help you get better results.
Now, again, if you're posting a resume on a job board, it should be a keyword rich generic resume that really speaks to a lot. But if you're applying for a job, you know what they're looking for. If you've been referred by someone, you know what they're looking for and you have to make damn sure that your resume shows that you fit or else you are wasting your time and there's. And you are not going to get the interview that you want.
