EP 1239  I answer a common question and correct mistaken advice people are given.

Summary

There seems to be a popular style with resume headers that people use – – they just put their name and phone numbers on the resume header. Sometimes, most of the time, they put an email address, but not always. Sometimes they don’t even put their last name on the resume. They just an initial or nothing there. So, I am expected to know that Jeff is me. But let me deal with the most important thing there.

The first thing is always put city, State and ZIP Code on your resume. In days of old, people put their address on the resume. They did that because firms would mail things to them. Obviously, no one is mailing anything anymore; they are emailing. But you want to put city, State and ZIP Code on it for a reason that benefits.

Your resume can wind up in some database whether it's with an agency or a corporation. A new job opens up. Here's how the search is run. They look for someone with particular skills and experiences using keywords. Then, from there, they try to look by geography. Where is this person located? If you don't have your ZIP Code on the resume, there is no way to find you. After all, if I live in New Jersey and they are doing the search by New York because the job is there, they can’t find you. If they try an area code search, well, let's say I was doing a 212 search and all the related area codes around New York (which is quite a lot but I will play with the idea).

So I put in the 15 or so area codes around New York. Let’s say, you moved and you took your cell phone with you. You will come up in that search. So, you've moved to Chicago and you are getting a call about New York. Doesn't work.

ZIP Code is the easiest way for people to find you. And if you don't put ZIP Code on your resume, no one will locate you in the future. If you don't provide it, it's a blank field; you are not coming up.

“Why don’t they just search for everyone? You know, I don’t want people …”

Act the end the day, we don't. We search initially by geography, people closest because most people are not mobile and are not willing to move nor are recruiters willing to make 500 phone calls and talk to people who in different parts of the country with no interest in moving. So city, State and ZIP Code on your resume.

Also, put your full name on it. Don’t try to hide by last name initial or just your first name. It’s annoying. There are a lot of people with your first name in my system. I have 280,000 plus resumes in their and if I'm doing a search for you by first name, I'm finding way too many people. Make it easy for me, okay?

So, the most important thing is city, State and zip code. Second, is put your full name on the resume. If you're concerned about discrimination, you are going to get discriminated against any way! But minimally city, state, ZIP Code and your full name.

LinkedIn profiles is optional. If you work in a professional category, try including it as long as the resume the LinkedIn profile are congruent. You have to take a look at that first.

But, assuming that they are put the LinkedIn profile there. More and more firms will look at it to look at the recommendations and in order to look for congruence. Make it easy for them.

EP 1265 Here are a few reminders you can use when writing your resume.

Summary

Resumes. Can't live with them. Can't live without them. I have done a lot of videos about writing resumes but I want to offer a few basic points that would coalesce some of those ideas.

Never ever use a template. Templates make you look ordinary; it cheapens the look of the document. Follow the format but you don't actually want to use one. One reason not to use a template is because, if you're going to submit a resume through an applicant tracking system, some have trouble parsing fields in templates. It also becomes more difficult for third-party recruiters to do editing.

"What do you mean? Why can't they just do copy and paste?"

It's because the frames that certain fields are put into make it hard to do that. In addition, you're also asking people to waste time they don't really have.

So, ditch the templates.

Next, instead of listing, "Objectives," just know that no one really cares and if you want them to care, put it into your cover email (you don't send a cover letter as a separate attachment. You put it into the message area of an email). You use that to talk about some of the things you are looking for in a job.

If you are used to using objectives, replace it with, "Summary." Make sure the summary is keyword rich, specifically with the right keywords for the type of role that you perform and the kind of successes that you've had. Again, when people are looking for resumes on job boards, when they are searching for them in applicant tracking systems or on LinkedIn if they are trying to find you, they are searching by keywords. They are not simply scrolling through resumes.

When writing your resume, don't just simply focus on your responsibilities, focus on responsibilities AND results that you have gotten, quantified by money saved were money earned.

These are a few the small changes I want to encourage you to make to your resume. So, to summarize:

1. Get rid of templates

2. Replace objectives with keyword rich  summaries

3. Spent time on responsibilities and results, the impact of what you did, quantified by money saved and money earned.

Today, I'm going to offer you should No BS resume advice to help you get better results when you send out your resume. There's a lot of pointers I offer about this but today's is something that I was reminded of with a resume. I was reviewing with someone yesterday. The point I want to make is get to the point .
Now, in days of old, when I started in recruiting, we actually read physical documents– – you know, a resume was sent to us on parchment paper with matching envelopes. We can look back at that historic stuff and laugh that it but that's the way it was done. We didn't have the technology we do now.
Now we receive emails of resumes though. No one actually looks at a document .We look at the screenshots. Yesterday, I got a resume from someone that ,as it turns out, fit the role. I was recruiting for. That was the good news. The bad news is I had to go through three or four page downs until I finally got the information. I needed.. Why ?Because this person decided that they want to give me a summary, a synopsis, you know a whole bunch of extraneous summary information that presented a terrible case for the candidacy, but fortunately I got down to the meat of the issue and that is what he had done over the last couple of years and was able to determine that was relevant.
Now if I took me time to read this nonsense, I would have deleted the resumebecause it was a five page resume with the first page and change being this enormous summary.
Why? Get to the point? Just demonstrates your fit for the role? That's your best sales tool if you know what the job is ,demonstrate your fit. Make sure your resume is keyword Laden, specific to the position that is being filled . Now, if you're posting a resume on a job board,it's very different. You want to have lots of keywords in your resume, and,maybe, a synopsis like this can be helpful… but not a page and quarter!
You want to make sure people are reading the meat of your resume in one page down at most so that this way you're not putting them through a bunch of work, and worse, a bunch of stuff that may get them annoyed or distracted tothe point where you cause yourself to be rejected.
I want to make sure you hear that.
You cause yourself to be rejected .
Just get to the information that's relevant,that's going to describe your background most effectively for the position that you're looking for and the role that's being filled this.

The Simplest Résumé Hack | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers simple advice for writing a great resume using this hack.

Summary

I will give you some no BS job search advice in the form of a resume hack. This is going to be a simple way to write resumes.

When most people write a resume, then write his master resume and they prune out everything that is not going to be relevant and then mail out the same resume to every job that they apply to. Like the broken watch that is right twice a day, it works sometimes but no where near often enough.

Here's the solution to the issue. It requires that you take the time to think of everything that you've done professionally.

What I want to do is to write this 1 grand master resume. It has everything in it that you have done – – role, responsibilities, accomplishments, if you are in IT, the technology that you have utilized. It also includes the revenue that is been generated by your work and/or the resume saved by your work.

Once you have that master, and it could be 10 pages long for all I care, but it's most important for you to start with your most recent job, work backward, and then create this master document.

Then, as you apply to things, as you submit your resume to friends who tell you about opportunities, I want you to prune out irrelevant things and call attention to the major things that you've done that relate to that specific job.

Some of you are going to say, "Gee! That sounds like a lot of work!" In fact, it isn't a lot of work. It is a lot more work to edit all the time than if you have a master document for which you are pruning each time into something useful for an employer.

After all, when you buy a personal computer (if you still buy them), it was a big deal when plug and play technology was introduced. What's that? All the devices could be plugged into any computer and you could create something customized based upon the need of the individual buyer.

If the manufacturer was deciding everything that you needed, you would wind up with a lot of unnecessary things and a lot of unnecessary cost in your device. By creating plug and play, you got a customized system based upon your unique needs.

The same is true with a resume. You need to, deliver a customized product for every single job that you apply to. If you think that's a lot of work. Let me ask you a question. Is a lot of work from your vantage point. To do this and "risk" getting a $15,000 or $20,000 raise or $25,000 or, for you veteran people, $50,000 or $75,000 increase? I don't think so. When all is said and done, it is not a big deal.

Write the master. Create this enormous document. Call attention to every little bit of substance that you have done. Then, each time that you are submitting your resume, take the relevant parts of it per employer, pull it into a separate resume and submitted to that firm. That's what you do. That's the simplest hack I can give you for resume writing because what you are doing up until this point isn't working, is it?

Try my way. It does work.

EP 1232 Here’s my thinking.

Summary

I was speaking with a professional resume writer today who is going to appear on my podcast, “Job Search Radio” and the subject of resume length came up in our conversation. She is a big proponent of the one-page resume and her position is that, in her format, where she's got a two column resume, that (#1) is what the document should only one page and that (#2) is your address and such should be on the bottom.

Here’s my thinking. I’m not a big fan of this concept. I’m supposed to see a copy of her template later today. I may change my mind. If so, I will do another video on this, but my belief about resumes is, frankly, the resume should be as long as it needs to be. I'm not looking at a 10 page resume; they never need to be that long. After all, who needs to know what you did back in the Stone Ages?

What you need to think about is “what's going to make case for your candidacy with this employer? What's going to demonstrate that experience and that you faced a particular problem, the actions that you took, the results that you achieved and some measure of what the impact was of your work period” so problem-action-result-measurement / metrics. Something that demonstrates your work is of value to your organization in terms of money saved / money earned or comparing you with others to show that you are an extraordinary employee. Other than that, the length is irrelevant.

I do want to encourage the more relevant stuff to be on the top of page 1 or early on page 1 because, frankly, most people or never going to get further than page down one and maybe page down two. That's it. If they ever print that out, which is a minor miracle that happens, they are not going to see it.

The “however” is, if they are interviewing you, they are going to scroll your resume, looking for additional value and, as such, yes, they may find something more than two-page downs along the way. However, you need to keep the relevant data as early on page 1 as you possibly can for a couple of reasons. Number one is employers skim resumes. Recruiters skim resumes. You want them to be able to find the relevant information quickly on page 1.

Number two. Applicant tracking systems. Often, they try to figure out relevance by how early in the document you demonstrate the experience. So, if it's on page 3 , they think it's antique information, so you always want to get up is early on page one as possible to avoid rejection without human intervention by a system that's been trained to evaluate not just simply whether the skill appears in the document, but by how early it appears in the document in order to determine relevance.

At the end of the day, length isn’t that important. Demonstrating the fit really is. Demonstrating that you are qualified really is. That involves, as I've been saying, it may involve a longer resume. It certainly involves tailored resumes, not just simply sending the same generic resume over and over again to every job you apply for as though that one resumes is going to get you in the door. After all, has that been working for you guy? Sister, are you getting results? Probably not.

EP 1154 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains why you shouldn’t use a page header on your resume and offers other advice to help you avoid making mistakes.

Summary

I just got a resume from someone who made such a dumb mistake and it's so unnecessary to make this mistake. I thought I would do a quick video for YouTube about it.

So back in the Stone ages when I first started recruiting people would indicate the page number for each page of their resume. So, it might, flush left, have their name; flush right it might say, page 2 of 3. The reason for that was people received resumes in the mail and you wanted to make sure that if the pages were separated from one another, you could easily compile them and puts them in right sequence. That's the reason for that from the Stone Ages.

Online, WHO CARES! Really, who cares now that I am now up to page 2 of 3? But here's why you should care and not do it any longer. And that is because everyone's system is formatted in a different way and, although on your screen, it may be page 2 of 3 or 1 of 2 as in this case, what unfortunately happens way too often is that the page break on my side shows that there are 10 lines of page 1 on page 2, that that I’ve got the guy’s name flush left and flush right page 2 of 2.

Why would you put yourself in the position of having some potential mistake occur.

I don't think embedding is going to help because embedding is one of the biggest annoyances recruiters have because, so often, what you've embedded can't be parsed and thus we can't get it into our systems to be able to find you in the future.

So, number 1, forget about the page numbering system. It's a throwback that's completely unnecessary. As a reminder, because I have done videos about this before, do not embed anything in your resume. It causes way too many inconveniences for the reader for their legal obligation to track your resume.

Understand, firms have tracking responsibility and if they don't comply, they can be in violation of federal law. Recruiters want to track everything however you think we can sit there and type in everyone's name, address and phone number and make sure (because this happened earlier today) that your ZIP Code is on the resume so we know where you are? That’s because if you want to search for you in the future, let’s say I have a search for and SAP person with experience with a particular module in a particular location, unless I have the ZIP Code I can’t find you.

That’s because the way the search runs is do I really want to talk to all the people in Dubuque with that background? No, I want to talk to the ones in Florida with that background and I use ZIP Code to be able to find you.

So those are come up a couple my pet peeves that got triggered by this mistake that someone made by numbering their pages.

Summary

Today, I want to offer to you a job interview tip that I see time and again, no matter how much I tell people they forget to do. The reminder is that when you are an interview and you're being asked about something that you done, most people talk about the situation or off our answer to the question without offering an example.

Examples (please excuse example. I'm going to give) are like mayonnaise to tuna in a sandwich. It's the thing that blends everything together to give it all a great flavor.

When you are interviewing, don't neglect great examples because they really give sustenance and texture and flavor to the story, different than simply reciting facts.

For example, if I were to talk about my background what I did recruiting, if I talk about the tasks of the day, it would certainly cause your eyes to glaze over within 5 minutes. However, if I talked about some of the difficult interviews I've conducted, some of the difficult situations of have to contend with involving job applicants who are just acting irrationally or institutional customers who are acting irrationally, how I handle the situations to bring both parties together so they might live happily ever after for many many years with one another would give you a better idea of what I used to do.

Don't neglect examples. Always use them in interviewing. Practice them in advance so that you are comfortable with them. Time and again, you will find that your interviews will thrive as a result.

Explaining Employment Gaps in Your Résumé (VIDEO)

Today, let's talk about how to deal with that gap in your resume . . . You know, that time in your background were took you 5 months, 8 months, 7 months . . . whatever it is to find a new position 3 years ago. How do you deal with that interruption your experience?

Some people have this silly idea that they are supposed to lie and cover it up. I must in all honesty tell you it doesn't work anymore. Employers are cooperating with one another and do background checks post-employment (after you join their firm). They will send a note to your previous employer and say, "So, Jane told us in their application that you work for your firm for such and such period of time. Does that seem somewhat accurate?" If they find inconsistency in your job application, it is grounds for termination. They can't keep you on board because, frankly, lying can get them into trouble.

Imagine for a 2nd that you are employed by them and commit some sort of crime. For example, you work on Wall Street and trade grandma's life savings down to zero. Can you imagine what happens when a lawyer gets a hold of the firm and asks, "you knew he lied on his employment application and you still kept them on board!" How do you think that would play out in the courts?

Employers have a very simple policy. They will terminate you. They will terminate you without any warning whatsoever. What they will do is meet you at your desk with security and hand you a box with your personal things and send you on your way. You don't want that to happen. Here's how you deal with it.

When you have a gap in your background, you use the cover email that you send your resume in (these are like the old cover letteyrs people use to mail the resume with. Today, that is the message area of your email) to sell yourself.

You might write in the cover email, "I'm forwarding my resume to you because I was recommended by so-and-so, you told me that your position for such and such." Or, you might say, "I saw your ad on such and such site that told me that you trying to hire such and such type of person. "

The 2nd paragraph my talk about your qualifications and how your background fits the role. The 3rd 1 might say something like, "you may notice my job history that for years ago I was unemployed for 6 months. During that time, the on the economy was terrible and they found it difficult to find work. Ultimately, I was able to land a job with another organization. "

Or, you might just simply say, "I had an injury at that time. I was in a car accident and had surgery. It was impossible for me to work." Or you might talk about how you assisted your dying mom during the last 6 months of her life. These are pretty common stories that employer hears.

Another one that they here is, "I took a package to leave my organization. I decided that I had not had a lengthy vacation since I was in college and decide to take 4 months to travel in China before coming back and resuming my career." What ever it is, do that in the 3rd paragraph and then come back and sell yourself in the remainder of the cover email.

This is the easiest way to deal with the gap in your background. Then, you have to remember what you told them in your email. So when you meet with them in person and raise the subject, they are looking for consistency. Thus, if you talk about that vacation that you took, you say, "I know a lot of people would find it difficult to believe, it was 1 of the great 4 months of my life. I love my work, but it was an opportunity to travel. I had money in the bank and decide to take advantage of this time." You just speak to them in a way that sounds absolutely sincere.

This is the easiest way to deal with the gap in the background.
