What’s The Difference Between a CV and a Resume? | JobSearchTV.com

A Curriculum Vitae (cv) and resume are used for distinctly different purposes. Here’s what they are and how they should be used.

Should I Confirm an Interview?

What’s the difference between the CV and a resume? Well, let’s start off with what a CV is and it’s Latin for curriculum vitae and it translates into course of life. Resume, on the other hand, is derived from a French term for summary, and the focus of each is a little bit different. So a curriculum vitae would be used as a full history of your academic credentials. So your length of the document varies. A resume is a concise picture of your skills and qualifications for particular position. So it tends to be shorter and dictated by your years of experience, but that’s translates into maybe one to two years of experience.

So CVs are used by individuals looking for grants or fellowships, postdoctoral positions, a teaching research position, positions in post secondary institutions, or higher level research positions and industry. Graduate school applications typically request a cv but, in general, are looking for a resume that includes any publications and descriptions of research projects.

Thus, a CV emphasizes your academic accomplishments. It’s used when applying for positions in academia, fellowships and grants. The length depends upon your experience and includes a complete list of publications, and presentations. Also, it begins with education and can include the name of a faculty advisor and dissertation title or summary and can be used for merit tenure reviews, and sabbatical leaves.

In contrast, resumes emphasize your skills and are used when applying for positions in industry, nonprofits or the public sector. It’s no longer than two pages with an additional page, separate from the resume, for publications or presentations if relevant to the job. After a year of industry experience, lead with the work experience in place the education section at or near the end with the exception of if your education is coming from a pedigree institution.
