Stupid Resume/Interview Mistakes: Communicating in Corporate BS

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
This is a mistake that may appear both in your resume or LinkedIn profile, as well as on an interview. I have read too many resumes and LinkedIn profiles, as well as too many people who make this mistake.

[00:00] Introduction
[00:34] What do you mean by a Corporate BS Generator?
[01:49] Outro

Hi. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And people hire me for no BS career advice.

I want to talk with you about a mistake that people make in their resumes and interviews that I think is absolutely ridiculous. And it really provides the kiss of death, because you’re speaking in a foreign language and that is you start using language that can only have been generated by a corporate BS generator.

If you’ve never seen one of those, do a Google search for corporate BS generator and there are a number of them out there. One of them has a wonderful Dilbert cartoon with the guy with the pointy hair starting off in the first panel saying ‘Our differentiating value-added strategy is transformational change.’ And you got to pause for a second and go, ‘huh?’ And then I generated a phrase that said ‘progressively target efficient clouds.’ What does this mean? Here’s another one, ‘conveniently, transition strategic virtualization.’ Now I’ve read resumes that are like this, where people speak in this corporate BS language, and it’s in their resume. It’s on their LinkedIn profile, and you’ve got to scratch your head and go, ‘What are you saying?’

Speak in plain English, don’t use acronyms, terms, corporate BS. Speak as one human being to another, in your resume and your interviews so that this way you don’t shoot yourself in the foot and make people go, ‘what did he say? What did she say?’
