Summary

There was a question on Quora today., "When applying to jobs, do you prefer filling out forms, one click solutions like on LinkedIn where you can apply using your LinkedIn profile, or a simple career specific email address?"

Let me start by saying that the question has a flaw to it. The flaw is whether you prefer the ease of doing something and you're looking at the question from the job hunter perspective. From the job hunter perspective, everyone wants the one click solution because it involves no effort. But there was a flaw.

The flaw is what gets results? Frankly, one click solutions where they are just sending off your LinkedIn profile, fail more often than not. Because the profile is not tailored to demonstrate what you can do for the organization. It is a generic thing... The same resume sent to job after job. The result is that you are focused on ease of submission; I'm thinking of demonstrating the fit. Employers are thinking of you demonstrating the fit, too.

If your profile happens to do it, great! Unfortunately, most don't. Don't take the lazy way out of here. Submit a resume (or actually contact the hiring manager, finding them using LinkedIn, see if you have a friend who can introduce you) and going in that root, rather than just simply sitting back and saying to yourself, "I would rather just sit back and let someone or something else to all the work... That they don't do.

At the end of the day, the even recruiters want to see something that vaguely looks like what they are trying to find for their clients. Again, don't get lazy about this because you will reap the consequences of that laziness.

Now, you might have the most wonderful skills on the planet but, eventually, it is going to shift and they are not good be quite so dominant. Trust me. There were a lot of Java developers out there who one day ago were heroes and now are ordinary as their skills became commoditized. That is going to happen to you, too,oh, Ruby professional, oh php developer, oh startup maven.. You may be ruling the roost now and hopefully will never need a job again. Your firm may wind up cashing out and you will become a gazillionaire.

However, the question is, what do you prefer? The answer should be, "I prefer a submission that is going to get the best result. One click apply does not do it..

Why Do Applications Ask You Questions When The Resume Has All the Answers?

Summary

So why do online applications ask you to fill in particular fields?  Why did they ask you questions when your resume has all the answers?

Starts off with the fact that employers, particularly large ones, but actually any employer as government reporting requirements in order to ensure that they don't conduct themselves in a discriminatory manner.  It's not as though there is anything personalized about this, but the statistics show that they interview (I'm just picking numbers at random) 100 people from a diverse population (a non-white male population) and 100 people are rejected. The government has the opportunity to say, "Huh. That's interesting.  Let's explore more deeply."

In the US at least, government requires that firms maintain certain types of data.  Let's go beyond that.

When you upload a resume and the system attempts to parse it, your resume may not be in a format or in a type font that that is easily readable by the system.

Catch that one again.

This is your part of the equation.  It may not be easily readable or in a type font that is parsable by their system.  As a result, you have to fill in certain fields.  Whether it is name or address fields that the system is just not able to read, your email address, the system has a concern.

Some applicant tracking systems asked the county in which you live. I have no idea why they need this information when so many systems are set up so that they can search by a radius of a particular ZIP Code.  Some are ridiculous and will ask for the county.  I think a moron design the form I forgot that people are human and not your sheep.  That one has nothing to do with government reporting.

The real reasons are (#1) your resume was not readable.

2. They may be asking for ridiculous things like the example of the county which isn't going to be anywhere in your resume.  Without that city, state or ZIP Code field

3.  I think this is a valid one.  So many people are not including addresses, so there is no city, state or ZIP Code information on a resume.  They are giving just a name, email address and phone number when they submit the resume.  If a person is doing a search in her applicant tracking system for someone with a particular background, they are never going to find you.  Without that city, state and ZIP Code field, without a phone number or mobile number (Remember that area codes of the phone number don't necessarily correlate to where you live), how did they find you?

It's very possible that your lack of an address is causing the system to request this information so that they can find you again.

Applying When You Are Underqualified | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 991 I offer your best way of being considered when you look at a job description and see you are underqualified for the job.

Summary

There are times you are going to be looking at a job description and you know you don't fit. You know. You are not qualified. But you want to take a shot.

Most of the time, no strategy is going to work because firms are going to read between the lines and understand that you don't have the experience for the job. But there are ways to at least give yourself a chance and I want to outline a formula that you might consider.

I want to be clear.. .If this works 15% of the time . . . That's fabulous because if you send the same resume, you said out for every job to this job come up . . . Well, what you've done is waste your time, their time and you are not going to get interview anyway. So, if you really want to apply, this is what I want you to do.

First of all, I want your list all the skills that are required for the position and give yourself a rating on your strengths in these categories. And if you don't have experience in in one of the requirements for the job, moving out to a separate area. So, again, you are creating a list of the qualifications that you have and that you don't have and then, I want you to think in terms of transferable skills that might be appropriate. So, for example, if they are looking for someone to lead a group and you have, not done, it professionally, but you that in your volunteer life, you are going to include those, as well.

Next, what I want to do is connect with someone works within the firm using LinkedIn or some other means to try to get a sense of how accurate this job description might be. You can find out some of these people by connecting with me because I have a huge network. So, in my address is ww.linkedin.com/in/thebiggamehunter. In This way, if you connect with me, very likely going to be connected with people and a lot different firms. And, if for some reason, I'm not connected with them, go to LI-USA.info. That's a search engine for all public LinkedIn profiles in the US. So it's US oriented, and it will give you all the public profiles of people on LinkedIn in the US. So you want to reach out to people at the firm to get a clearer picture of what they are looking for.

Then, I want you to write a cover letter . . . Actually, not a cover letter but use the body of your email in order to summarize your skills that fit the role. Talk about how long and how recently you've worked with and them, your transferable skills that might relate to some of the things that you may not have professional experience with but is relevant to what they're looking for. In this way, the idea is to to just give them something pre-chewed and pre-digested that demonstrates your potential fit for the role. Whether that's from volunteering, part-time, jobs graduate school, internships . . . whatever it is and then you tweak your resume a little bit because you want to love some of these functions that you performed to the top third or half of your resume so that if you are submitting it through an applicant tracking system that is looking for keywords, you're trying to make the resume . . . I don't want to say full the ATS but what you want to be doing is demonstrating to the ATS that you are a possible fit. So, if you list these things to late or you don't list them at all, the applicant tracking systems is going to reject you and you have just wasted a lot of time. This is your best shot; I hope you find it helpful; I hope it works for you some of the time some of the top today,

Read the Damn Ad | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 988 I just started receiving useless resume upon useless resume all day because someone doesn’t read the ad.

I used to be recruiting; did it for more than 40 years and I actually recorded this originally as a video. So there is a reference to that in the recording but I now just do coaching, and want to be clear about that because it's kind of spoken about in the context of mine being a recruiter. I don't do that anymore. I'm cure! I am out of the recruiting field.

This is a video that's coming from a couple days of experiences of . . . I do recruiting. I the post ads, as well. I have been getting ad responses that are ridiculous. I have to say what makes them ridiculous is people don't read the ad. So, for example, if I'm saying the job is in Western North Dakota and they go, “Where is the job?”

I understand you are getting a bunch phone calls. “Oh! I didn’t apply to something in Western North Dakota.” Well, you did and that's how I got your resume. You sent it to me. You didn't pay attention and you know that one line where it says location? It said “Western North Dakota.”

Salary? “Gee. That's much too low.”

“Why did you apply? It was in the ad.”

“What you're looking for,” and I mentioned the qualifications and I am looking at the resume and there is exactly 0 .. . Nothing that fits the requirements of the position.

I'm just asking people be courteous. Read the damn ad!

At the end of the day, stop wasting other people's time spamming resumes. It is no big deal to you to send a resume, but imagine what it's like for corporate recruiters and people like me who are getting a couple hundred a day, most of which were colossal waste of time.

In the 1st show I did, I was interviewing someone and I asked, “So, how many resumes you think I walked into on Monday morning?” The answer was over 200. I there is, “How many of these people to think vaguely fit the requirements I am looking for?” My answer was 2. 1% MAYBE fit want something I'm looking for you.

If you look at all the time it's wasted, it's ridiculous that you think you can flip a resume over the transom and get a response . .. But then you get angry when you don’t hear from me.

So I'll simply say, “Read the damn ad!” Pay attention to it.

There is reason the word, “qualifications,” is over a section of the job description. Talk about what a client of mine has laid out as being important to them and don't ignore it. It has meaning.

I will just tell you what I tell the people I coach in recruiting. They're not gonna call you unless you vaguely fit the requirement. Do something when you submit a resume that shows that you fit the requirements of the job.

Should I Follow Up After I Submit My Resume? | JobSearchTV.com

Here’s a question from someone about whether or not to follow up on their resume after it is submitted through the applicant tracking system.

Summary

The question for today is, "I uploaded my resume to a company. Should I follow-up?"

Follow-up can have many dimensions to it. A lot of people think follow-up means, "as soon as I finished uploading it." You get on the phone and call the recruiter/the company/whomever and say something to the effect of, "Hey! I just applied for a job!" Don't do that, please. What will wind up happening is you will never get through and, if you do, you will be interrupting someone who you given no time to actually receive your resume, just to say or do something that works for you.

You see, the system automatically transmits your resume. It's not like when you uploaded it there was a system fail and they didn't receive it. You probably got an acknowledgment that was uploaded successfully. So why would you follow-up immediately? All you're doing is looking for attention. You want their attention on your resume.

Give them 24 hours and then put the phone call in and simply say, "It seemed like there was a little bit of the system thing on my side and I just want to make sure that the upload worked. If not, I will do it again. I didn't want to create duplicate data in your database. Would you be kind enough to just make sure that the upload worked. By the way, if it did upload correctly, that you have a chance to look at my resume? If not, that's okay. Could you give me a sense when you might be able to get back to me. If you are interested?"

In this way, you are not being a nag.
