I’ve Changed My Mind About Elevator Pitches

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
For years, I was pitched by people in ways that were so boorish and so 1980’s. Listen to my pitch and craft yours using the framework I offer.

How Proactive Networking Will Prepare You For The Inevitable

For years, the idea of an elevator pitch nauseated me because I’ve seen too many of them in my work as a recruiter, and I found them really offensive. They were boorish; they were obnoxious. You know, they were grandiose. And I always felt cornered when someone gave me one. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m called the Big Game Hunter stemming from my time when I did recruiting when I’d hunt down leaders and staff for organizations. Did it for more than 40 years.

And now I provide no BS coaching and career advice to people globally because I make things easier for them related to job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading better, resolving workplace issues, and more.

And that was my pitch. People hire me to . . . And thus, I make a very concise statement about what I’m hired to do. And why they hire me to do it. You see, the old-time pitches would be like, introduce yourself, summarize what you do, explain what you want, and finish with a call to action. By the way that comes from indeed.com. And that’s the old time elevator pitch.

I’ll just simply say, if you think of what I just did, I made it very clear about what I’m hired to do and why. The why is I make things easier for people. You can do something comparable for yourself. And just start by saying “people hire me to . . . and then finish the sentence. And suddenly, this isn’t so obnoxious, is it? I make things easier for people in relation to what and I define a couple of things. It’s really two sentences, tops. And then from there, if someone’s interested, you can go into more detail about how you do it. But don’t force it on them. And if you follow this framework, it works far more effectively than the typical elevator pitch that we were all trained to do.
