EP 1459  Here’s how the sausage is made.

Summary

The question I received was, "What happens to my resume after it is received for a job post?" This is like the sausage and how it is made. It is really an ugly process.

Once you've submitted it to a job posting, there are now 2 possibilities. One is when you've submitted through an applicant tracking system; the other one is when it asked to the email a resume. Smaller firms might not have the systems in place and you are emailing a resume.

The applicant tracking system is a filter. It parses your resume and inputs data into their system and may or may not, depending upon the system, score your resume based upon your use of keywords to determine whether or not you are a POSSIBLE FIT. I want to be clear. POSSIBLE FIT.

It is not perfect, obviously, and depending upon the scoring system and how it has been set up, and how the dictionary of terms has been created to evaluate, you may or may not be passed on to THE FIRST HUMAN BEING. Often in corporations and with the search firm that person is representing that business area or that hiring manager who is attempting to fill the position. They are doing a visual scan. Again, if you came in through an applicant tracking system, some systems will never let you get that far because if they are seeing you doing "serial applying" as 1 of my guests on Job Search Radio described or you are applying to lots of different disparate jobs, they are just going to block you and never let that resume get through even if you might be qualified because they have identified that behavior as being reflective of (please excuse my language) bullshit artists.

Assuming that that is not you and you're getting to the 1st level human being who is there to check, with some organizations that could be the hiring manager. Most of the time, it is HR. With smaller firms, it is whoever is "stuck" having to look at resumes. That's the reality to it. It is whoever is "stuck" having to look at resumes because the owner was busy. "You look at the resumes and show me the ones of the people who think fit." That person makes a determination and passes it to the hiring manager or, if it is a search firm or an HR person, they are going to do the 1st screen.

Ultimately, systems are there to save time and, obviously, they are not perfect. They do a lot better as a time-saver then you as a job hunter would prefer that they do. You are applying to jobs because you think they are right.

Now, in some organizations, HR is not even going to interview you on till the hiring manager says to do so. "I want to talk to that person." You are dealing with the ladies all the time, because your resume is going from the applicant tracking system to HR to a hiring manager for home hiring is only 1 of their priorities; they have a job to do. As a result, they are not there sitting by their computer instantly giving responses. They are looking when they have some time. Sometimes that is on their commute. Sometimes it is when they need to take a break. Sometimes it is when they schedule something on your calendar to review resumes. They are trying to work it into their day when they have time that they can take away from their "real job." That is the way they think about. Taking time away from their "real job."

Your resume is an interruption. They may wait for the weekend to review a bunch of resumes. They may wait so the evening. They may wait for their commute. Whatever it is, they are not instantly looking at your resume.

That is what goes on behind the scenes from a process perspective. Some systems may send you questionnaires; some recruiters, both HR and agency recruiters, may send questionnaires to clarify particular parts of your background because your resume wasn't clear enough to them answer those questions because you are not going to get to the interview otherwise.

Summary

Indeed is a great service. It is aggregating all sorts of jobs from all over the place. It's to be replaced upload the resume and have it distributed to people. There was one thing about the indeed resume service that is a little quirky. They shield the contact information from people who are searching for it and, thus, you have to contact the candidate through their system.

Someone should be a workaround for that because 1 of the issues with doing that is that it makes. Indeed, more importantly needs to be in this process. If you want to have that delay with people contacting you, if you want that sort of "emailing messages sort of thing" that indeed offers, great! Leave it as it is. Most people I know want to have speed in their communications. They do because, the fact of the matter is, you are competing with other individuals for these jobs. Any delay can cost access to an opportunity that will make sense for you. I think you get that.

Here's what I saw someone do. Melvin, great job! I really like this!

What he did in the body of his resume, under his current job and worked into the content, he put his phone number and email address. Indeed is not going to purge that. As a result, for recruiters who wanted to reach him, they will be able to get his name, phone number and email address and reach out immediately to him. No delays. Beautiful!

If you are actively job, that's a way for you to go. When you are not actively job hunting, see if you can remove the resume from the site or edit that area so that you're not getting more calls or emails..

Great little hack. I thought I would bring to your attention.

Summary

I know you is in John Hunter are constantly being told not to use job boards to find work. I've use them. I think you should use them, too.

BUT

Job hunters over use them. They spend 80% of their time on job boards when, in fact, job boards, only fill AT BEST 30% of all positions.

So why do you do it? The answer is because most of you are lazy. Most of you try to take the easy way out instead of doing the hard work necessary to network to find a job.

You see, when I say I use job boards, I also would network aggressively, I do LinkedIn research. I reach out to any number of people. I do direct mail campaigns. I talk to absolute strangers. I blog. I created videos.. I create impressions with people. I publish the e-zines. Several podcasts. I do a lot of things for people to find me and the work that I do.

You don't do that.

If you're working full time, yes, you come home and do some things but are there 5 minutes in the day where you can network with someone? 5 MINUTES?? You don't take a break at some point for 5 minutes and reach out to someone you used to work with?

I don't buy this, "I don't have time" stuff. I'm working a lot and doing a lot of things. You can be doing that, too.

Don't take the easy way out because it doesn't really serve your career well.

Do More People Get Jobs From Networking or Job Ads | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1041 A good question and there is an answer.

Summary

The question I received was, "to most people get jobs from networking or from job ads?" Let me give you the statistics.

Recruiters fill about 6% of all positions; job is filled about 15 to 20%. I combined the two numbers because recruiters sometimes use job ads to find people so it is just easier to combine them both. 26% are filled by job he has and recruiters.

How do the rest get filled? They get filled by networking. Here is an interesting addendum.

Most of you think of networking as the people you already know. However, there are folks your network knows that you don't know. Statistics show that 70% of the positions the filled through networking , as a result of introductions to people that you did not know at the beginning of your job search.

Catch that one! Of the privately 70% of positions are filled by networking, 70% of them are filled by introductions the people that the job hunter did not know at the beginning of the search! Almost 50%!

Your goal is to network because that is really where most of the jobs are filled – – by creating relationships with people that you don't currently know and by expanding the relationship with people that you do know.

Job ads are fine. I encourage people to work with recruiters and answer job ads. However, recruiters are not out there to help you. They are not going to be the source of the lead where they are not compensated. After all, who is a recruiter work for? There working for a company that is going to pay them.

My job is to create a venue for people to want to help you. That comes through networking.

Do Job Boards Matter? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

Today, I want to talk with you about whether or not you should be applying for jobs using job boards.

There is an article that I saw online that poses the question, whether job boards matter anymore. The article includes data from the corporate perspective using this 1 firm's model. What they say is that people found their job listings, 38% found them through corporate websites, 35% through social media links, 23% through an email campaign, 4% throughout the links. Interesting data if you are trying to hire. Let's break down the data.

They talk about how 61% of social media visits and 95% of social media applications were in the 1st 7 days. In other words, they were able to get out the message a lot quicker using social media. They got more applications more quickly using social media.

Social Media
From the job hunter perspective, social media is a great way to find out about "stuff." It's a great way to find out about jobs and companies….It is a great tool when you are job hunting
.
However, I also want to say the job boards are a terrific tool, too. You can call that job board Monster, CareerBuilder, Dice or whatever! You can call it LinkedIn because that has because LinkedIn certainly advertises jobs in a variety of ways and I'm talking about a job board feature here.

All these job boards are going to be morphing fairly soon and aggregating jobs like Indeed and SimplyHired do.

The relevance to you is that despite all the hype in the recruiting world is around LinkedIn, the fact of the matter is that people are ship finding jobs to job boards. They are finding jobs through networking too much higher level. But, yes, they are finding jobs for job boards.

Yes, it is a tedious process. There are a few things that make it better. For example, I did a quick demo with someone at monster.com for a little utility that they have called BeKnown. That operates on Facebook. Once you register on monster and come over to Facebook to look for jobs, what you will notice is that on some of the jobs a picture starts to appear on someone that you are connected with on Facebook who works for that firm or has worked for the firm.

This is the idea of using your network to finesse your way into an organization, having an advocate supporting you in order to get interviewed. They obviously can't get you hired, but may be able to get in touch with the hiring manager and provide an employee referral that might result from the introduction and earn a commission and, you, an interview and the job.

The Data about Networking is Overwhelming
My advice to you is to use all the tools that are available to you. After all, they all work. As Dave Opton of ExecuNet said on "Job Search Radio," the statistics are very overwhelming, that the way that 70% of people find jobs is through networking. 70% of the 70% find jobs as a result of introductions to people that they didn't know at the beginning of the search.

Catch that one. 70% of the people find jobs through networking. 70% of the 70% (or 49%) found a job as a result of someone that they didn't know at the beginning of the search.

Anything that you can do is going to help you find work. Networking. Job boards. Friends. It all works. Don't drop anything from your arsenal because job boards and recruiters fill a certain number of jobs, even though networking feels far more.

Just keep working the job boards. Keep working. The technology that's available to you to find out about leads (like the agents that will deliver leads from job boards to your inbox).

Is It Worth Using Paid Job Boards or Can I Stick with The Free Ones?


Are PAID job sites worth the investment or should we just stick to the various FREE sites (i.e.Indeed, Careerbuilder, etc.)?

Are paid sites worth the money Indeed, Careerbuilder and the like?

As always, it depends.

One paid site I know of used to be a great site but has lost a lot of its luster. It has become an aggregator of jobs from other sites. Should you pay for that? No! You get that from indeed.

Indeed and SimplyHired aggregate jobs from many places. Same as GlassDoor.com. You don’t need to pay for most of the jobs.

So the simple answer was, “No. It isn’t worth paying for job board.”

However, it can be worth paying for LinkedIn.If your network is small or average sized and you want to be reaching out to people (as you should),Here’s what I think you should do.Join as many as 100 groups in your area of specialization (LinkedIn lets you join as many as 100 groups).

If you join 100 groups,  starting with the largest ones in your area of specialization, then,If you discover you not able to connect with enough people, if you network is still not large enough to provide you with entrée to the firms that you want to apply to or join, then become a paid member of LinkedIn.Start with the least expensive one and work your way up from there.

The most extensive service available through LinkedIn, I think, is $99 per month (I could be wrong.  It might be $119) And allows you 30 InMails during that month. If you’re not bumping up against inMail limitations, let me suggest a workaround for you.

You can get a lot of the data you want from Google Chrome extensions.  The chrome extensions include Prophet, Connect6 People Discovery, Connectifier Sociallinks, Discoverly for Gmail, Linkedin and more, EmailHunter, and Lusha.

What they do is when you visit a page where you have a 2nd level connection, 1 of these services will be good about providing you with a work email for them even if you’re not a connection with the person.

Download and install these connections for Chrome and you will get most of the contacts that you need with these extensions. If you’re still not successful getting email addresses for everyone that you want to connect with, then go to the paid service for LinkedIn.
