What Should I Do If I Am Rejected For a Job I Love | JobSearchTV

EP 1289 Being rejected for a job can feel very painful but there are two things you can do.

Summary

"What should I do after being rejected from the job. I love?"

He or she follows by saying, "I'm desperately looking for a job in a foreign country where I got my degree and finally went to the final round for position. I love. The positions I can apply for our rear end, after the final interview, they said, 'No.' I feel so devastated and don't know what to do next."

With regard to this firm, it's over for now. I say for now because it doesn't mean that you can try working there for other positions or other opportunities. The fact is, you have been turned down for this job. What can you do?

Answer. Learn from this. What did you do, right? What could you have done better? Where was the background just to be superior? Where was adjudged to be not as good as the person they chose?

You might try messaging back to the firm and says to them something along the lines of, "I'm obviously disappointing choice, but I would like to learn from the experience. I understand you chose someone else. I am not going to argue the point. Where did you perceive the other person was superior to me?" You have to keep the promise of not getting into an argument because then you will knock yourself out from years to come because everyone there will remember you. Not only that, when they leave, they will remember you at the next firm and block you from joining there.

I understand you have an issue because you are looking for something in a foreign country, and you may be dealing with visas and other bones of contention that this firm was willing to handle for you. This job is gone and all you can really do is learn from it. If they tell you, "We didn't find you strong enough in such and such," improve upon it. If they say, "you are too aggressive," look at that as to whether it was true or not. If they say you are not aggressive, look at that and see if that was true or not. After all, sometimes there is pushback because they are afraid that you're going to try and argue with them. Sometimes there is pushback in giving an honest answer. for a million reasons, including, they are too busy.

What ever it is, from the vantage point of view, this is a learning experience. For now, you are not getting this job. The person that they hired may not work out. You might just put a tickler in your system for 60 or 90 days out that politely says, "I know you hired someone for this role, but perhaps they are not performing as well as you would've liked. I thought I would reach out and see if you are satisfied."

You may not get a response which actually is a response. But, this is a fun way to see if by some miracle, there's an opportunity for you to reenter the scene here. Not right now. Like I said. For now, you have to learn from it. In the future, do like I said and put a reminder in your phone to contact them 60 days from now, 90 days from now, as if they are completely satisfied with the person they hired. I suggest this because there's a statistic about employer remorse related to people that they hire.

I think the statistic is that 60% of hiring managers have buyers remorse after they hire someone. Take advantage of that. See it see if there's a possibility that you can reintroduce yourself if you are not goofing now.

In the meantime, you're getting information about how you can improve and do it so that this way, if the miracle happens and they do want to talk with you again in 60 or 90 days, you've done some work to improve yourself in the area that they perceived the deficiency today and you can do a better job.

This strategy applies to any job. It's not just the foreign job. Any job for which are turned down, try to improve and see if in 60 or 90 days after you've gotten the notice of rejection whether they are completely satisfied with the person they hired, and whether they consider talking with you again.

EP 1278 I explain why firms don’t give feedback to job hunters. 

Summary

Why don't companies give feedback?
I am going to give you very, succinct answers.1. By not responding, they are giving you feedback.Your background doesn't fit a job you applied for. That is very clear feedback. You just don't like it. You want to be told why.

Why they don't tell you why they don't respond to your resume or chose someone else to interview, why your interview, cause them to reject you in the 1st place, the 2nd plot point, the final interview… Why aren't they communicating?

Why should they? Because you want to know? When did you wind up on their payroll? When did you become the individual that they were supposed to focus on?

"Oh, it would be very nice if they did that. It would show great respect and care for me if they did that."

That is not the job. Their job is to fill positions and to hire people to do stuff.

"But it would only take 2 or 3 minutes!"
Not when you start arguing with people and that is really what happens a lot of times. People go, "But but but but but… I know I can do this job!" And there is no convincing them at that moment that their background doesn't fit.

As a result, firms have learned by the behavior of your predecessors not to risk wasting time by giving you honest information.

Sorry, the people who have preceded you have soured the well. They have poisoned it by arguing. They've done it by behaving in ways that cause employers, "Screw it. There is nothing in it for us. Don't bother."

I know as a third-party recruiter, every once in a while, I have shown mercy and have told someone what has been said. I want to acknowledge that at times I have heard discriminatory things from firms and I argued with them about their bigotry and been taken off the vendor list as a result. I won't stand for bigotry.

That's the issue, often with employers. They don't want to be identified as bigots because the real reason is you are too old, you are too young,, you are to this, you are to that.

If it is a knowledge issue, let's break it down further.

Your resume doesn't show that your background fits the job. Sorry. What else are they going to tell you. They didn't respond.

They saw better resumes. "What made those better resumes?" What difference does it make? Your background wasn't good enough to get in the door.

If it is in the interview phase, I must, in all honesty tell you that you already know.You know there are points in the interview that you didn't perform well so just accept the fact and you learn something from it. 

You don't have to be told to your face that the issue was your performance.

Duh!

You sensed it during the interview, you lost their attention at particular points… If you are a fresher or an entry-level person at 1 of these mass interviews (a firm brings in 40 people), a certain number of people performed better than you, they had better education, the better answers to interview questions, they prepared better for the occasion.

A lot of the reasons you don't get results, I cover at JobSearchCoachingHQ.com because the issue often is lack of preparation or poor preparation. I coach people through the site and answer questions. But, more importantly, I provide time by offering great content that you can review at your leisure. Videos, podcasts, articles, all my books are there to teach about job hunting. Everything is there that allows you to learn you need to know in order to be effective with your job search. 

You don't need them to tell you. You see where it is breaking down. As I've said many times, if you are not getting calls about your resume, your resume stinks or you don't demonstrate that you have the skills to do the job that you are applying for.

If you're getting to the phone interview, but not being invited in for an in person interview, you don't phone interview well.

If you invited in for the in person with the hiring manager and you are not invited back,… You see where I'm going with this? Everything in the process gives you feedback.

The thing you need to do is improve, not whine. That's really what this question is. "Why didn't they give me any feedback? I want to know why question!"

They are telling you and they are giving you feedback. The system demonstrates why and where it is breaking down. Don't be foolish. Just improve.

Coping with Job Search Rejection | JobSearchTV.com


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains how to cope with job search rejection and improve.

Summary

If you've been job hunting for any length of time, you've been turned down for a job. Maybe, it was in the no reply to the resume you uploaded to someone's applicant tracking system. Maybe, you went on an interview or two or three with a firm and got turned down. Whatever it was, you've experienced that feeling of rejection and disappointment that often comes with a job hunt.
Now, in this video, I just want to offer you some simple pointers for how to deal with rejection. And, number one is try not to focus on your excitement and your desire for this job because the statistical probability is you are going to get turned down for more jobs than you're going to be accepted for them.So get used to the notion that you're going to get turned down.
Secondly, if you are actually turned down, I would like you to ask the employer or the recruiter what it was that caused you to get turned down or rejected. Now, if it's an applicant tracking, yeah, I hate tracking systems. They are . . . I use a very simple one so that I'm able to screen everything but most applicant tracking systems like Taleo, for example, the one that's used by more corporations than any other . . . Basically, all they are doing is they're screening resumes for keywords in an automated way with no discernment. So, if your resume isn't one that uses keywords in a particular sequence, you're going to get rejected. It's really that simple and, as a result, no one's going to see your resume. No one's going to be able to see that you've actually done the role except expressed it differently.
I really detest them but that's not the purpose of this video. I just want to simply say you're not going to get a response as to why you got turned down by an applicant tracking system.
If you got turned down on an interview, step number one is to ask the employer or the recruiter why it was that you got turned down. Often, you hear the answer to lights too light in what regard. Just follow up with a question and simply say,"You Know, I'm not here to get into an argument with them. You just want to learn from their observations and apply it to future situations." Often, an employer isn't going to tell you. often, a recruiter isn't going to tell you; at least ask the question. Why they won't tell you? These are litigious times and, as a result, if they turn around and say., "your oral communications were horrible. You know, you you were featherweight in this line of work." They're just afraid of getting sued. So, don't expect an answer from them. However, what you can expect to do is to take some time in self-reflection., what could you have done better? How could you've delivered your interview even better than the way you did?
I'm not saying you did a bad job. Often, the reason you're not taken is that someone with more experience comes in and as willing to work for the same amount of money or someone with more equal experiences wants to work for less. It's often that simple. But if there are things that you can learn, ask and, if they're not willing to share them you've got to spend some time learning from this.
Now, here's the most important thing that I can tell you. Just because you failed on this interview doesn't make you into a failure. And, as a result, you need to get right back on the horse and get back out there and start networking and talking to organizations and working on finding your next job and not just simply going, "oh, woe is me! I feel terrible. I'm so disappointed!" I'm being facetious of course, but so often, people go into this great funk from which it takes days to come out of.
I was talking to someone I coach recently who didn't return my calls for a few days and then decided to surface and and he told me that he really expect to get a job he was interviewing for. He didn't so he decided to take a couple days off. Okay, not the way I would suggest. If anything, you go back out there again. You spend some time having focused on what it is you could have done better .If it was in your control or had to do with them. If it was them ,you go, "okay, it wasn't me," and move on. If it was you, you figure it out and you change it. It's that simple.
So, getting turned down for a job doesn't have to be a death sentence for you. All it is is an opportunity to improve your skills to learn more and work harder on finding your next position.
