You Are a “Manager,” Not a “Manger”

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to not be lazy and to spell and grammar check your résumé.

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: The Tournament Brainteaser

And I want to talk with you today about not making some of the common mistakes that I see in resumes. And here’s what I see time and again.

People don’t use their spellchecker. So, the result winds up being they describe themselves as being mangers instead of managers. They are the LIASON instead of LIAISON.

They lead, not led. So, once again, spell LED versus LED. And in my personal favorite, they ASSES versus ASS, A-S-S-E-S-S.

And from a grammar perspective, there are a lot of mistakes as well. Your Y-O-U-R versus Y-O-U apostrophe R-E and on and on and on. You know, my point in all of this is not to be obnoxious, but to point out that every time you make a mistake in your resume, there are hairs on people’s necks in Brussels.

And they start to wonder . . . you’re trying to make a good impression on us. What’s going to happen when you come on board and you’re not trying to make a good impression on us anymore? Where are the screw-ups going to occur? Now, I want to encourage you, use Microsoft words, spell checker and grammar checker. Spell checker is perfect.

Negotiating

Grammar checker, it depends on context sometimes. But when all is said and done, you want to be making sure that the resume you submit comes across perfectly, that there are no grammar mistakes. And sometimes you have to make a visual examination of the resume because in some of the examples I gave, there weren’t spelling mistakes like manger versus manager.

Manger might go through because it’s spelled correctly. Manager is the word that you’re really meant to use. So, be conscious and take a look at your resume to ensure that the spelling errors . . . that no spelling errors get through, even though the word is spelled correctly.

And definitely run the grammar checker. There are times where you may use a bullet point that isn’t a full sentence, but you can visually check the language in order to make sure that everything is accurate. So, this way, what you’re doing is making a great first impression by comparison to the lazy people who don’t do this.

And I have to say lazy because what’s the big deal? You’re running a spell checker and a grammar checker. Is this so difficult to do? So, that’s today’s show. I hope you found it helpful.

And if you did, again, please give the show five stars in iTunes or Stitcher. It helps other people discover the show. It helps with rankings.
