Your Digital First Impression May Be Getting You Rejected
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
EP 3103 The reality is simple: recruiters and hiring managers are checking you out online before they even think about an interview.
This episode gives you the hard truth and the specific, actionable steps you need to take to audit and clean up your digital presence, especially on LinkedIn and other key platforms. Stop letting an unmanaged digital footprint sabotage your job search. Learn how to craft a powerful, professional online image that opens doors instead of slamming them shut.
So, you’re on the job hunt, right? And you’ve probably spent hours, maybe even days getting that resume just perfect. But what if I told you the game has completely changed? Let’s get into it. Because that first impression you’re trying to make? Well, it’s happening way before anyone even sees your resume.
Okay, so you’ve polished it, you’ve triple-checked it, and you finally hit sand on that application. You’re feeling pretty good. But what really happens in that moment? A recruiter or hiring manager sees your name.
I’ll give you a hint. It’s probably not what you’re picturing. Yep.
Before they even open that PDF you so carefully crafted, they’re already online. This isn’t a maybe. It’s pretty much standard procedure now.
They are absolutely going to research you on LinkedIn, and you better believe they’re going to Google you. They’re trying to get a quick read on who you are professionally before they invest time in the paperwork. So, let’s just call this what it is.
The pre-interview check. It’s a whole new step in the hiring process. You know how a firm handshake used to be that first, crucial impression? Well, today, your digital footprint is that handshake.
It’s the silent introduction you’re making long before you ever get to say a word. For the longest time, the whole job search world revolved around a single document. Your resume.
That was the old focus. But the new reality? It’s so much bigger. It’s your entire digital footprint.
Everything from your professional profiles to what you share, what others say about you. It’s the whole shebang. Alright, so where are they actually looking? Well, it almost always boils down to two key places.
First, your LinkedIn profile. That’s a given. They want to see your history, your connections, and what kind of things you’re talking about.
Then they’ll do a quick Google search, just to see what else is out there. The key is making sure that what they find tells the right story for the job you want. Okay, so we’ve established they’re going to look you up online.
Now, the goal here isn’t just to have a clean presence. No, no. The real pro move is to actively use this to your advantage.
It’s about turning your profile from a static, boring page into a dynamic portfolio that actually shows how you solve problems. And this right here is the absolute core of the strategy. Every single company is hiring to solve a problem.
That’s it. So your number one goal, with your entire presence, is to illustrate how you solve those kinds of problems. You want a hiring manager to look at your profile and immediately think, oh wow, I can totally see them doing that for us.
So how do you actually do that? It breaks down into three pretty simple steps. First, curate your presence. Seriously, Google yourself.
Look at your LinkedIn profile with fresh eyes. Does what you see actually align with your career goals? Be honest. Second, start posting relevant content.
You don’t have to write a novel. Share an interesting article. Add a quick insight.
This stuff dramatically boosts your visibility. And finally, use that feature section on your LinkedIn profile. It’s prime real estate.
Pin your best work right to the top. It’s your personal highlight reel. You see, all of this, your online activity, the posts, the profile tweaks, it all builds towards something way bigger.
A Critical Blindspot in an Executive Job Search
It builds your personal brand. And look, brand can sound like some intimidating marketing term, but it’s not. It’s really just a modern word for something that’s always been critical, your professional reputation.
Let’s just demystify this whole personal brand thing for a second. It’s not about being an influencer or having a cool logo. It is quite simply your reputation.
It’s what you’re known for. When someone in your industry says your name, what’s the first thing that pops into their head? That is your brand. And that brings me to the big question for you.
Take a second and really think about it. What are you known for? If a future boss were to ask your colleagues about you, what would they say? And maybe more importantly, what do you want them to say? The answer to that is the absolute foundation of your brand. We can break that big question down into four main parts.
Your brand is built on who you are, your professional identity. It’s what you do, your skills and your expertise. It’s your successes, the proven tangible results you’ve delivered.
And maybe the most important one, it’s how you succeed. Your unique process, your secret sauce. If you can tell a powerful story across these four areas, you are golden.
And make no mistake, this is not just some feel-good exercise. Your brand makes a real tangible difference. It frames how a potential employer sees you from that very first click.
A strong, clear brand tells them you’re a pro who knows your value and can deliver. It sets the tone for everything that comes after. So this is what I want to leave you with.
Your digital footprint is out there, building your reputation 24-7, whether you’re managing it or not. So the only question left to ask yourself is, is the story it’s telling helping you or is it hurting you?
