The Mistake You Make Negotiating Compensation | JobSearchTV.com

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

There are so many mistakes people make when negotiating their compensation. This one sets the tone for your failure.

Understanding The Interviewer

When people go into salary negotiations, they make a critical mistake. Now, one thing I know is that from the very first time a firm is asking you about compensation, and what you’re earning how much you’re looking for, that’s the salary negotiation at work. It’s not just when you get the offer; it’s when they’re interviewing you and talking with you about compensation, and asking you about, “So, would you be a little flexible for a great opportunity?” And you’ve, of course, reflexively said “yes”, even though you really know nothing about the job, except what you read in an ad or a job description, that may or may not be accurate.

So, remember, your job is always to deflect until later. Thus, when you get to a salary negotiation, the thing you have to have communicated all the way through the process is that “I have confidence in myself,” because if you respond to their question about someone should be a little flexible, by going and hyperventilating in front of them, they know you’re going to be flexible, and whatever price quoted them is not going to be the one that they offer. They’re going to offer less if they make the offer.

And if you get to the point of begging them to increase it, they know they got you. And you know in terms of your impact when you join the firm, it’s not the one of authority and certainty.

So, the mistake people make is not expressing themselves with confidence. I’ve said many times, people don’t just simply look for competence. They look for self confidence, character, chemistry, charisma. They want to hire people who care and with whom they connect. The person who gets nervous at a negotiation hurts themselves, not just simply in the negotiation for money, the package everything, but they hurt themselves once they’re on board.

Have people spontaneously ask you, “So, would you be a little flexible,” or “if we offered you $5,000 less than what you asked us for, could you do that?? Start practicing your answers because it’s not just what you say that matters. It’s how you say it that demonstrates your self-confidence.
