EP 102 A story from sports and Cindy Crawford. How does this make a show?

Summary

This is The No BS Coaching Advice Podcast, episode 102. I'm your host Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and welcome. I like to spend some time weekly talking with you about some aspect of life, the universe and everything. And today's show comes out, of well, that's an addiction of mine. I am a New York Giants football fan, which this season has been a hard thing to be. After all, going into last night's game, the Giants were 1- 7 and not nearly as good as that record. And they won last night. Yay! Finally. .And I stumbled into a short video clip of their coach speaking to the team after the game and he said something I think Is worth repeating. "Remember nothing in life is easy, but when you fight through it, it's that much sweeter." So often, I know we prefer the easy way be handed to us and we enjoy the pleasure of the outcome, but, you know, sometimes, battling through adversity and getting to the other side just feels great. That's a nice quote from Coach Shurmur and it's easyto look at this from the standpoint of sports. There's a winner and there's a loser and when your team is losing a lot, it feels great to win.But the process of winning when you've been in a losing mode for a while, when you've been experiencing adversity for a while, there's a lot of noise that starts to happen. There's noise between your ears. There's noise that other people give you who are well-meaning most of the time that are telling him maybe it's time to pack it in. Maybe it's time to give up and it's important to start recognizing the difference between those who really care and actually have the wisdom to help you and those who know . . . Their intentions may be well-meaning but aren't very useful. Keeping the noise out and not quitting is important in sports as it is in life. Knowing when to give up on an idea that doesn't make sense to pursue is just as important and sometimes more so. A few minutes ago. I read a post on Facebook from a friend of mine in dismay because a childhood friend of his, a school safety officer had committed suicide. It reminded me of how precious life is. I was listening to a podcast this weekend, an interview with Cindy Crawford, who no matter what assumptions you may have about people who work in modeling, Crawford is not your stereotype. First of all, she doesn't describe herself as a model. She describes herself as someone who does modeling. Shesaid something that was so simple yet elegant and as I get older it's so true for me. "There's a privilege of getting older that so often we take for granted." And as I've said before in this show, a lifetime is not a long time. We like to think of ourselves as being Immortal but life has a way of showing us how foolish we are to hold that belief. Folks,If you ever worry, if you're ever so upset with your life or circumstances to consider what this man did, I want to encourage you don't. Please talk to someone, you know and open up to them. Don't hold it in. It's the holding in that causes the pain to really fester and get pussy and disgusting and cause you to take action. Please don't. I just beg of you.

EP 80: Another confluence of events yields a reminder for this show after 3 friends came to me for advice.

Summary

Hi, I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. This is The No BS Coaching Advice podcast. I like to spend some time regularly talking about life and today's show really comes out of three conversations I had this week. You don't have to hit me over the head in order to get my attention when three similar events occur and not tell me, "hey, this is a show that you a lot to do."
Now, what happened was …well, it first started with a friend of mine who was working on a book and he's been working on this for a few years and his agent got him to a publisher. He was thrilled. First books don't often come to a publisher, especially when you're no name. And here he is now in a situation where the publisher has gotten him a crappy cover and wants him to do something with the book that he just doesn't think makes sense from a marketing standpoint and he's calling for advice.
"What should I do? After all, I've got this trip plan and I don't really have a lot of time to deal with this."
And then another friend of mine called me talking about a situation where they were commissioned to do something or to do a piece of art and. now they're dealing with a few "inferences" if you get my drift and then, finally ,today came another friend of mine with whom I'm talking and he's in a situation where he separated from his wife. His wife's family's in the house. His son is in the house and all three of them had a similar case of, you know, "we're putting up with something that we don't want to put up with. What should I do?"
And my answer was pretty uniform why?
What do you want here? Why are you putting up with this? You are not happy with it. Now, in the case of the author, now, the question became could he negotiate with the book publisher to get a different cover and the second thing that he wanted or walk away. in the case of my friend, the the person who was commissioned, I'm not going to go into my recommendation there. I'll leave that one private. And, then ,the third one became,, " okay. You're unhappy in your own home and you sound depressed. You don't have to feel this way and I'm going to turn back to you and say, " where were you putting up with things that you really don't need to? Where are you tolerating stuff that just doesn't make sense for you to be putting up with?"
I'll just simply say these three friends of mine all came to me to look for some advice about how to manage these things. And, you know, it's, in effect. aone session call, the equivalent amount of time to a one-hour session. I can help you with some of these situations as well.
I'd love to do that. If you're interested, contact me through Linkedin at www.linkedin.com/in/TheBigGameHunter. Once were connected . . . And, by the way, message me with the connection to let me know that you listen to the show and you'd like some help. Once we're connected, message me again, and let's see if there's a time where we can speak. I would love to help you.
So, I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter.. I hope you have a great. Take care.
