Summary

There are 2 thoughts that came to mind this morning. The 1st 1 is you know how you sometimes get these awards, sometimes it was in school. If you are less experienced person; sometimes is a corporate award. The issue of listing the award isn't that you got the award or that you're putting the award on your resume. The problem is that there is no context for the award.

For example, if you received a scholarship, if you received the award while you were in school and said something to the effect of, "sole recipient of the Such and Such Award,. 4100 individuals submitted their qualifications. I was the sole recipient of the award." That gives people the context for how special it was. For the corporate award, if you talk about what you did to receive the award and if you know how many others were put up for that award and that they chose you (for you are 1 of 5 recipients), they give you a real opportunity to stand out in the reader' s mind. Otherwise, they don't know what they are reading their or its import and how you competed to get this award.

Do that sort of a technique in order to stand out.

Lastly, if you are doing temp work, if you are doing consulting, and you want to brand yourself and your resume, don't put the name of the temp agency there. If no one is ever heard of it. I don't care if it is a big local temp agency or consulting firm, look at the brand of the client that you work that during this assignment. That may be the bigger brand that's going to get more recognition.

For example, if you work for (I'm just making up this name) Big Temp Agency and you are at Coca-Cola as a client, which one do you think you should put on the resume? Answer. Coca-Cola. Then, in the body underneath Coca-Cola, you indicate you are a consultant at Coca-Cola for such and such agency.

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the basic rules of job hunting and how branding contributes to that.

Summary

Yesterday, I received an email from someone who asked the wonderful question. "Are we seeing careers that are more profitable than ever with people acting as the room temp agencies and if you don't brand yourself, do you get left in the dust."

I'm going to start with the 2nd question 1st. The simple answer is, "No." It helps, but you won't necessarily get left in the dust. People who have branded themselves are clearly advantaged over those who haven't. Let me just take a minute and talk about the rules of job hunting these days.

The basic rule of job hunting is to remain marketable. Marketable doesn't mean that you have great skills work that you are the most competent although that's my position to put yourself in. Marketable really translates into salable. You possess something that is salable. Skills and competence are only one element of being salable. Do you have a charismatic quality about you? Do you have a way of engendering trust that causes people to want to take a chance on you? Thus there are other qualities that come into play beyond simply marketability and being salable.

People found work back in the Stone Ages when I started recruiting in 1972. They work for a company that had a great brand or even a mediocre brand. It is always a lot easier to work for a firm with a good brand because you have a halo by association.

These days, that still exists. After all, if I said someone worked for Google, you would probably have a very positive association with the Google brand the transfers to them. You might think they were smarts. You might think they were an elite individual. You might think they were very intelligent, as well as a number of other factors that can associate with the Google brand.

People used to find jobs to, "the old boys club." The old boys club has been joined by, "the all girls club," as well as any number of individuals that some function as support groups for different groups of individuals that provide mentorship and advocacy for career development.

Recruiters existed then in the exists now. Trade groups existed then and now. Alumni associations. All these were tools that support a networking back in The Stone Ages and still exist today.

The real thing that has changed since when I start recruiting a social networking and the ability to brand oneself, branding apart from the organization.

How do you do that and is that particularly important? Answering starts off at the 1st part of the question that the person asked (Are people being successful by in effect running the room temp agency). I want to address that by talking about running one's own temp agency, but by owning one's own career instead of surrendering one's responsibility for their career to their employer.

Back in the 50s, 60s and 70s in the US, if you went to work for a "good company" at age 20, you expected to work there until you got the gold watch. Obviously, that doesn't exist anymore. Why would you want to surrender responsibility for your life as well as the health and welfare of your family to an organization whose goals are probably very different than yours? An organization who at times may have to make very specific business decisions in order to protect their firm that may impact your family? Clearly we have learned that over the last few recessions and that were back here again talking about the same issues.

What personal branding does is allow you to develop a reputation apart from your organization. For example, I used to be associated with a recruiting firm in New York, but have clearly developed the brand as "The Big Game Hunter" apart from that organization by writing a number of books, blogging, articles, videos, podcasts, and a number of other ways that allows me to be separate from that firm so that you have an impression of me. Apart from that organization. Thus, when I did recruiting, when organizations were trying to hire leaders and staff, often they thought of me and The Big Game Hunter , apart from the organization I was associated with.

That could exist for you as well because 1 of the things you need to do in order to promote your career is to develop a personal brand. Whether that will allow you to do is to passively look for work.

Why would you want to do that if you are really happy doing what you are currently doing? The answer is pretty clear in that the people who get ahead aren't always the smartest or work the hardest, even though there is a great qualities to have. People get ahead of the ones who remain alert to opportunity. Sometimes those are internal to the organization; more often than not, they are external. What personal branding and social networking allow you to do is develop a reputation and image of being an expert.

More often than not, what I'm talking about is a white collar phenomena. For blue-collar workers, I'm not sure how someone who is works in construction or landscaping develops a personal brand in the way that I'm talking about. There might be but am not aware of how it is done for employees of those firms. It is a reputation for hard work and reliability. But how you develop that reputation at your job and have people talking about you so that others learn about you?

In the white-collar marketplaces, it is a lot easier because you can create a brand through blogging, networking, social media that allow recruiters both third-party and corporate recruiters to want to find you. There are times that you would receive an email or the phone is going to ring because people have learned something about you. They see an article that you've written, a LinkedIn profile that interests them that allows them to find out about you and be curious about YOU and YOUR experience and what YOU have done and what you can deliver to another organization.

There are times that the phone is good be raining and it is (Knock. Knock. Knock), "It's opportunity knocking," and someone to call you, email you or inMail you and say something to the effect of, "I'm doing a search for client and your background looks interesting for this role and then want to have a chance to chat with you." You may be happy in the job but if someone offered to youth $50,000 more or $5000 more, depending upon where you are in your life, as well as an opportunity to do work that is more interesting to you than what you are doing now with people who are quite talented, why would you be interested? Although it might involve risk, it would certainly be worth exploring the opportunity. Later on, you can decide it is not worth doing. The idea very simply, is to always be open to the possibility of another job.

This certainly became true in the 70s and beyond, but given the labor markets as they exist today. I'm going to reiterate what I've been telling people for more than 40 years now, you are the CEO of your organization. If your organization went out of business, you are still responsible for earning an income for your family, right?

You need to think of what you can to protect your interests and advance them. It people change jobs with some regularity, doing the strategic job change was some regularity (I'm not talking about every 6 months but every few years), it will allow people to have a catapult to their income that can be quite significant.

For example, if you are an administrative assistant in change jobs for $5000 raise, and in 3 years you change jobs for an additional $5000, the probability is that in succeeding years (watch the math on this). You would ever earn $35,000 more in base salary plus raises along the way. Thus, you would've earned somewhere between $36,000 and $40,000 in additional income just by making 2 job changes.

I'm not telling you to go out and look for job. I'm just pointing out that you have to look out for your own career planning so that you look after your own interests, because your employer is in for looking out for you.

You can start early when making a career change. In this video, I explain a simple good strategy for beginning the transition.

Summary

I want to talk to those of you who are considering a career change, a transition, a pivot, however you want to think of it, you're trying to move from one profession to another and considering how to do it, thinking that it's overwhelming, and, frankly, it is a large undertaking.
One of the ways to do this is to begin the process of seeing or having other people see you as the expert in the new field. Now, "What do I know," you may be thinking to yourself about my new field. "You know, I'm a beginner there. I haven't been doing anything along those lines."
You're absolutely right. You may have been taking courses; you may have an interest; you may be doing things to aspire to the new profession but you're not an expert, certainly in the eyes of the marketplace. You're definitely not an expert but what you can start doing is learning. In learning, you can e starting to brand yourself for the new profession.
Now, doing this transition, of course involves risk. After all, you're leaving your old life behind, your old professional behind and moving to something else. As you already know, through social media, one of the ways that we start to trust people and believe in people is getting to know, like, trust and respect their ideas that we discover on our own through their websites, social media presence and such.
One of the things you can do is starting to create that presence by (number one)sharing things that you think makes sense. That's really the starting place0150 0150 learning about your new career, sharing articles, videos, ideas that you have, and maybe a one or two sentence comment about it.
Start there. You want to be progressing soon and not relying upon this. Progressing soon to the idea of writing your own things, doing videos about the subject.
"Oh my God! I will be on video!" Yes, you learn to be on video. The camera's available on your computer or iPad or whatever device you use and you start sharing it and posting it to YouTube. You put it on LinkedIn. You put it on medium. You start to get known as an expert. Take an hour a week. In other words, less than 10 minutes a day to start thinking of and writing your article. Thinking of and doing your video.
The first ones are not going to be great. You know that However, with time, you will get better and although no one will initially discover you because you may not have a significant following, with time they will. Recruiters will start to reach out to you for the new professional and for the new interest that you have because they're looking to discover people.
So, as you start to feel more confident, you start changing your LinkedIn profile. You start positioning yourself there, and with what you create and share as being the expert in the new field. You'll discover that, with time (and that's the key here. With time) you'll be branded in the new way and leave the old one behind.
Again, what you create in the way of content should relate to the new field, not the old world. And, in that transition, begin positioning yourself as the expert because with time you really will be.

EP 1229 I point to one of many possible challenges a person may need to face.

Summary

I was doing a class last night in they posed a wonderful paradoxical question you. I am just going to repeat it to you.

“If you can't lose the game, the game is not worth playing.”

The metaphor that this version of coaching does is that most things can be enjoyed and be made more successful when, instead of thinking of it as work or a task, we construct a game about it. So, again, to just repeat, if you can't lose, the game is not worth playing. In other words, if there's no challenge here, why bother?

As a result, most people take the safe route in order to advance, and frankly, it leads to mechanistic behavior because, frankly, at the end of the day, where's the fun in all of this? Where’s the challenge to all of this? So, if you can't lose the game, the game is not worth playing.

Here’s the second one. When you really play, you always win because failure (what most people would associate with not being successful) is a learning opportunity. You grow from it. You expand yourself and, in the course of stretching to achieve, you’re changing yourself. This isn’t about the outcome, per se. It's about who you become in the course of doing this.

What got you here, won't get you there. For job hunters, this is hugely important because, at the end of the day, you're going to need to adapt to new roles unless you want to stay doing the same thing the next 30 or 40 years of your life. I don’t think you want to do that period I think you want to grow and stretch and learn from this experience and being in and environment that supports you.

That's true in your job search, as well. You're going to need to learn new skills and start thinking of, not just simply the immediate search, the totality of your career development. You need to build a brand for yourself. You need to construct solutions that employers want reach out to you for that you want to become known. In other words, you want to build “the brand of you.”

There’s never been a time in human history where it is easier than now to build one. After all, you’ve got YouTube here. You have video, you have live streaming. There's twitter. There’s Facebook. There’s LinkedIn. There are all sorts of venues where you can do things. There’s public speaking. There’s all sorts of venues where we can practice doing things differently then you have to this point and create “the brand of you.”

I'm not expecting you to get on YouTube and do 1000 videos plus like I've done (by the time you see this, I am already over 4000+) the important thing is that you start thinking in terms of what you want to be known for. What qualities and experiences and successes and knowledge do you have and do you want to be known for so that people want to reach out to you and offer you opportunities instead of you seeking them out at a time to time we you get a crisis or feel desperation.

You are far better being “the go to person” in your field, rather than being someone who's always like as supplicant, hat in hand, trying to find something.

After all, the person who gets ahead, isn't always the smartest semicolon they don't always work the hardest (although those great qualities to have). People get ahead by being alert to opportunity. Sometimes those are internal to your organization. More often than not, they are external.

Since most jobs are filled as a result of networking connections, you want to make sure that people know about you. Practice and put yourself in situations where you can speak publicly. Be the expert at a conference or one of the experts at a conference where people bring you in to espouse on your knowledge and your successes.

Never done it before? There was a time I never did a YouTube video. You learn. Get yourself into Toastmasters. Practice there. It's an easy supportive environment where you can learn that skill. Write an article. Get it published. Never did it before? Most people never did the first time they write one. You may make a mistake and you will learn from it. It’s okay.

Just start exposing yourself to new instead of getting yourself into this or rut where you are constantly doing the same repetitive thing over again. At the end of the day, each time you take a step toward evolving your career and making sure that people know about you, you are closer to never being out of work.
