Summary

Amazingly, defeating the applicant tracking system involves cover letters, something that is such an anachronism in these modern times that, for most people, it is a complete waste. For an applicant tracking system, I think it is the way to defeat them. Here's how it goes.

Most people use cover letter as a separate attachment, right? That's not really good help you with an applicant tracking system and, if you put in the body of an email, that won't help an applicant tracking system either. Finally for second.

What I encourage people to do is take a job description that you know exists, like you are submit a resume because you saw an ad, you don't have the time or inclination to track down the hiring manager or network to the hiring manager you're actually going to submit your resume through the applicant tracking system. God bless you and this is the best thing I can suggest to you.

You make page 1 of your resume the cover letter. Slide everything down the page. Thus, your resume actually begins on page 2. Page 1 of your resume as a section that is in 2 columns. The left column has the job description; the right column has how long and how recently you've work with that particular skill. Here's how it defeats the system.

The systems are generally looking at page 1 and maybe the beginning of page 2 4 how your background meshes with the job. Everything of the job description is now on page 1, right? After all, everything that they're looking for – – role, responsibilities, accomplishments, if you're in IT, the technology that you've used – – is part of what you are using this list. They are going to tell them how long and how recently you've work with it.

Everything is on page 1. It causes the system to choke. It causes the system to say, "this person looks like a fit."

At the end of the day, if you are going to submit your resume to an applicant tracking system, use a cover letter as page 1, following this format that I'm suggesting and I'm sure you will get more interviews.

They Want to Apply from Their Phones | No BS Hiring Advice


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the fact that more people are job hunting through their mobile devices and verifying that your ATS will make it easy for them to do so.

Summary

I want to talk to you as an HR professional, hiring manager, small business owner about your mobile presence. I'm not going to go through a big production about mobile today. I'll just simply say I've got another video about that.
For those of you who use applicant tracking systems for people to contact you, you need to make sure that either a your ATS or applicant tracking system is mobile friendly and/or there's a way that an applicant can submit a resume through Google Drive or Dropbox to your ATS.
Now the reason I'm bringing this up is the statistics are bearing out that, more and more ,people are applying for jobs using their mobile devices and, for them, they may be using the mobile app like one from Indeed or SimplyHired or or any of the job boards now to apply for a position.
Now, if your ad is directing them to your ATS, and they can't really submit a resume easily, you're missing out on some talent . . . and frankly, right now, I think the statistics from Indeed in the United States are more than 40% of jobs are being viewed through mobile device.
So at the end of the day, make sure you're ATS is mobile friendly, and make sure that people have the facility to upload a resume through Google Drive or Dropbox. If it doesn't, contact your vendor and ask them to make that an upcoming improvement to the ATS because, you know, they're all willing to do this. So, again, mobile friendly accessibility through Google Drive or Dropbox for completing an application.

Summary

Do Applicant Tracking Systems Actually Care About Descriptive Keywords on a Resume?

My in answering this question, I want to delete the phrase, "actually care," because caring is a human emotion; these systems have no care whatsoever. Looking for keywords and in particular context is their entire reason for being.

That's what their job is. That's all that matters to them. There is very little discernment in most of the systems.

As someone are linked in group commented upon, as they turn this conversation in this direction, if the job description and the programming for the ATS says, "information technology" and you say data processing, there is a disconnect there. The system may not know that term unless it is been programmed to recognize that and you cannot make that assumption.

Applicant tracking systems are looking for a number of things. They are looking for:
1. Where in the document do you have the key terms for this job? Is it on page 4 word is likely to be 100 years old, or is it on page 1 word is likely to be more current?
2. They are trying to see where you live in relation to the job. Are you within reasonable proximity because some firms are not prepared to go through long distance job hunting.

On and on and on, an applicant tracking system is designed to narrow the field down based upon preprogrammed criteria that don't translate into caring but translate into, "Can this person get to our office and do this job? Do they have a history of dooming this job. Based upon these criteria?"

The answer to my question with regard to an applicant tracking system is, "Yes, it matters to the system and, thus, whether or not these keywords are there."

Going back to that LinkedIn group, which was a veterans group, 1 of the people who commented on the previous video called attention to the fact that he had gotten more than 100 responses on one post that he had put up for job. He knew some of the respondents had the right skills, but the resume did not get through the system because they did not use the correct terms.

If you are applying through an applicant tracking system, you always have to use the correct terms because the systems don't have much in the way of discernment programmed in.

You have to understand, they are not looking for gray. They are looking for , (black or white. Whether or not you have the experience or you don't. If you don't, or you are in the wrong geography (buzzer sound). If you do, you make it through the funnel.

The Best Way to Avoid “The Black Hole” | JobSearchTV.com

Today, I’m here with some very simple, very direct, No BS resume advice. Let me talk with you about resumes. The point I want to make is, for most of you, what you're doing is submitting a resume into an applicant tracking system, a talent acquisition system in bureaucratic language.

What these systems are all designed to do is (#1) accept the resume, (#2) be searchable, (#3) satisfy federal reporting requirements and (#4) make it easy for on boarding should you be fortunate enough to be hired.

The important thing from your standpoint is that this is your entry point into an organization and when firms are looking at these resumes, what they're doing is searching for the particular keywords that are relevant for a job search.

So, again, your resume has to demonstrate a fit but, more importantly, unless it follows certain conventions, the systems reject them.

The one legendary thing people seem to insist every once in a while and send a JPEG; they want to use a PDF. They embed the header on in Word (that is that area we can embed something in at the top or bottom). The systems are unreliable in reading embedded headers and, because of federal reporting requirements, do you know what firms do? They delete them because they just have to give accurate information to the government and do you think they are really going to sit there and retype them and all this information in? Of course, not.

So, use Word. Don't use an embedded header. These systems will take text files but who once to go through it? If you don't own Word, that’s the way you may have to go through it or Google doc.

But you want to have a resume that demonstrates a fit and is used in a file format that the systems like, if you want to have a pretty version of your resume out there, it's okay. Put it on a website.

You can put on Tumblr or any number of other sites and make its SEO optimized. Use a PDF in those formats. The idea becomes, very simply, that attractive version of your resume SEO optimized, will attract people to you for years to come.

So, my reminder to you, my advice to you is Word files, keyword optimized for the particular job that's been being recruited for is really very simple.

Summary

Amazingly, defeating the applicant tracking system involves cover letters, something that is such an anachronism in these modern times that, for most people, it is a complete waste. For an applicant tracking system, I think it is the way to defeat them. Here's how it goes.

Most people use cover letter as a separate attachment, right? That's not really good help you with an applicant tracking system and, if you put in the body of an email, that won't help an applicant tracking system either. Finally for second.

What I encourage people to do is take a job description that you know exists, like you are submit a resume because you saw an ad, you don't have the time or inclination to track down the hiring manager or network to the hiring manager you're actually going to submit your resume through the applicant tracking system. God bless you and this is the best thing I can suggest to you.

You make page 1 of your resume the cover letter. Slide everything down the page. Thus, your resume actually begins on page 2. Page 1 of your resume as a section that is in 2 columns. The left column has the job description; the right column has how long and how recently you've work with that particular skill. Here's how it defeats the system.

The systems are generally looking at page 1 and maybe the beginning of page 2 4 how your background meshes with the job. Everything of the job description is now on page 1, right? After all, everything that they're looking for – – role, responsibilities, accomplishments, if you're in IT, the technology that you've used – – is part of what you are using this list. They are going to tell them how long and how recently you've work with it.
