Too often, job hunters at all levels take the lazy route to finding a job and get the same predictable results.

Which Is Better–Applying for a Job Directly or Using a Headhunter?

 

Too often, people take the lazy way of, of trying to get hired. They see job ads, they apply for jobs, they sit and wait and wait and wait for the applicant tracking system response to say, “we’d like to talk to you.” And you know what? It’s not the most effective way to do it. Now, I’m not going to do a speech about networking. I’m going to talk with you about something different.

The thing I want to remind you about is getting to the person who’s going to hire you in a way that allows them to get a feel for you, and want to talk to you, and not just simply sitting passively by your computer, waiting for the message, hoping that they give you a message they want to talk to you.

There was a great story of a young woman on Tik Tok, who told about how she got her job by going to Pixar with some chalk and drawing outside the building, and getting noticed and invited to talk to people. Now, I’m not saying you should go draw, although if you’re creative, that might be a way to get someone’s attention at a target firm is by drawing something outside their building, or doing something creative that allows them to see your work and sending it to them.

Remember, people hire people. How do you connect with a person proactively so that they’re intrigued? Remember, when a person’s intrigued, they’re curious, and they’re going to pay attention to you. When you’re just another commodity applying through the system, you’re ordinary until you get in the door, and you may never get in the door. How can you cut the line? How can you get someone’s attention?

What Are Strategies for Applying for Jobs When I Don’t Meet The Experience?

Now, creatives have a visual media. You can always message someone through Twitter, and share something with them that makes sense and provide them with a link back to it. You can do the same thing on LinkedIn by messaging someone and providing them with information about you that is relevant to what they’re looking for, or what you believe the firm is looking for and asking them to point you in the right direction.

 

Figure out how to cut the line, get someone’s attention, make them intrigued by you so that you get to the front of the line and your advantage. Don’t just simply apply. That’s what everyone does. And you get the same results that everyone gets, which leaves you complaining.
