Stupid salary negotiation mistakes. I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, a career and leadership coach. And I was reminded of this one with an interview I was doing with someone this week, that's going to appear on YouTube and on my podcast later. And it's the notion of caring too much that you get the result that you want. Because the way caring too much shows up is desperation. "I really want this," you think to yourself. "I need to get this," as opposed to not caring. Now, when you are dating, and this was where it showed up in the interview that we . did . . . When it shows up in dating, it's often shows up as the stalker, the guy who's desperate, the woman who's stalking. Now it's desperation that shows up in the course of the interview, or I should say, in the course of dating, and desperation is not an attractive quality, right? Stalking someone-- not an attractive quality, and on . . . on salary negotiations, when they sense desperation, they're not going to budge. Because from their standpoint, they don't think they have to, because if you're so desperate, that you're begging them, and you may not go "please, please, please." But you're acting in a way that where they can smell the desperation, then they think they gotcha. So don't care so much, that you have to take something and settle. Care enough because they like to see caring on the interview. But not during a negotiation. You hurt yourself in the negotiation, when you care so much that they can smell it, that they can sense it. They can feel that about you. And they know you're not going to walk away. So I'm Jeff Altman. I hope you found this helpful.
