Stupid Career Branding Mistakes: Who Knows About You?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
One mistake I see too many professionals make is that they are invisible outside of their own company, trusting that Mommy and Daddy company is going to look out for them.
When I think of branding, with related to a person in their career, I think about how you answer the question, who knows about you. Who knows about you is the most pivotal thing you have to think about in building a personal brand for yourself.
For example, if only the people on your floor, if you’re back in the office, in your company know about you, I don’t care how large the firm is or how big the floor is, it’s a pretty small universe. If it’s outside of your organization, if it’s because you’ve spoken at a group, you’ve spoken from the stage at a conference, you’ve written, you’ve commented, you’ve shared on LinkedIn and elsewhere that’s relevant for your profession, suddenly, your universe starts to expand.
Now I want to be clear, branding is not a one time activity. . . Unless you have a million views on your first day of posting something. It is something that you do to regularly create an impression with people so that they know, like, trust, and respect you for your expertise, what you want to be known for and they think of you. You become top of mind as an expert for your field. Without that without people knowing about you, you’re just one of a lot of people in the ocean. You’re one of a lot of fish in the ocean, but you want to be the one fish that they think of all the time. There are lots of ways that you can become top of mind. But the real question comes down to who knows about you and how can you make more people know about you, given the tools that we all have available to us?
