My Conversations with CEOs

I was listening to a podcast this morning with an interview with Dave Kerpen who gave a great lesson in branding and before you go away because I know job hunters don’t like to hear about branding, there’s a piece of advice he gave he spoke about an incident that his own life.

He tried reaching out to an investor and the story was he sent an email, got an autoresponder that says, “I never respond to email .”orange sneakers

So he goes to a conference to meet this investor. There are 500 people around the guy. So, he can’t get near him and he’s getting frustrated because he’s traveled to this conference, he’s invested time and energy and, lo and behold, he can’t talk to the guy because there are just so many people around.

on the second day of the conference, he standing around and hears this voice. Now. I don’t remember if the voice sounded like this, but I’m going to be a little theatrical. Ready?

” I want to talk to the freaking guy with the orange sneakers.”  He was wearing orange sneakers and the investor wanted to talk to him because he was fascinated with the fact that this guy wore orange sneakers.

The point of the story – –if you’re another “me, too” person, if you’re another person that’s got nothing to distinguish themselves from the other 500 people, then you’re just one of the pack. By wearing orange sneakers or, in real life, you might choose to wear a very unique tie or a great scarf or something that really makes you look spectacular . . . it could be your glasses and how unique they are, lo and behold, people seek you out and isn’t that what you really want?

You want people coming to you instead of you always chasing them. That’s the miracle of branding. When you take the time, not just as one effort, but as part of an overall effort to brand yourself in people’s minds as an expert in your field, suddenly, folks are reaching out to you for advice, counsel, information, investment opportunities, business opportunities, a whole host of different things.

So, I’ll have a link to the Dave Kerpen’s book in the notes for this but, at the end of the day, think. Think about what you can do to be different and not just simply one of the pack.
