The Easiest Way to Negotiate a Higher Salary for Yourself

I was on LinkedIn and stumbled into a post from someone I’d interviewed for JobSearchTV and No BS Job Search Advice Radio. A woman named Maya Grossman, who shared a story that I think is pretty common for a lot of people. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS coaching and career advice globally, which can relate to job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading better, a whole host of different things, because frankly, I make things easier for people and take the worry out of scenarios. And what I loved about her story is two parts. One is the clever response to the comment that was made to her by the hiring manager, which was “Gee, you’re $25,000, more than anyone else we’ve interviewed. Can you meet us halfway? But she also, I’ll get to her response to that in a moment.

But she also acknowledges the more important thing. Number one is, everything that she did in the interview, demonstrated her real value to that organization. Everything that she did made a case for why they should choose her because otherwise, this manager doesn’t have a reason to do anything, right? After all, it’s easy to reject. But once they’re coming to her, for the “Can you meet us halfway,” you know, they really want to hire you. So that’s number one. Number two is belief in yourself. Because if you don’t believe in yourself and your value, you’re not going to come back with the comment that she did which I thought was wonderful. Because she acknowledges first of all, her worry. Her nightmare here that she was going to lose this opportunity by being too greedy. So as she says, ‘I gulped, took a deep breath and said, what I knew to be true without hesitation.’

And this is a beautiful response. “I don’t know who else you’ve interviewed, but I’ll be worth the extra $25,000. At which point, the hiring manager was quiet. She worried and then he or she said, “Okay, HR will be in touch.”

Now, there are going to be some people who are constrained by budget, and they’re not going to come up with the money. But the truth is, do you think you’re really worth it? And why would you compromise on salary if you’re really worth it? You’re just going to resent them and it’s going to affect your employment.

So I thought it was a good story to share. But don’t lose sight of the fact that she spent the time in the interviews, creating the value that made them want to choose her, and that she understood her value. She understood her  belief in herself that allowed her to respond quickly.
