Want to Create Value at Work? Be a Stork! | Career Angles

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

If you are someone who wants to be known in a good way, professionally, become a Hans Christian Andersen stork! Let me explain.

Swimming in the Same Dirty Water

Hans Christian Andersen, who is a prolific Danish storyteller. Many, many fairy tales are attributed to him. The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, the Red Shoes, The Princess and the Pea. The Ugly Duckling. Thumbelina. They’re just so many stories.

And in Andersen’s world, there are two types of birds that show up–The Stork and The Pigeon. The stork is the bird that goes to the lake, picks up the babies from the lake and delivers them to parents. Pigeons, on the other hand, are birds that are kind of fat and flap around and kind of disappear. They don’t really do a lot, do they. And a lot of folks fall into one camp or the other.

For most of you, you want to be a stork. You want to be bringing something of value to every interaction that you’re in. If you don’t have an interaction that’s useful, you turn into a pigeon, where you just flap around, keep your mouth shut, disappear. You don’t want to have a lot of those interactions. You always want to be remembered as the person who brings value to an organization, to every interaction that you have so that in this way, people remember you in a good way.
