Stupid Resume Mistakes: Showing Markups

Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and people hire me for no BS career advice.

Is it okay to tell people on LinkedIn you were laid off?

Your network can really help you a lot. After all, they know people. And in doing outreach to your network, you can’t just simply say, ‘I’m looking for a job. I was laid off. Tell them about your successes, because they may not know. Tell them about what you’re looking for, or any particular firms you’d like to work for. But make it clear, you’re open to others. Make sure you tag other people, including former managers and colleagues, because they can help you and they knowWhat looking at the screen you. Share it with your connections. Share it in the feed using hashtags.

However, on your profile, don’t make any changes to indicate a completion date to your job. After all, the algorithm doesn’t really like to refer people who are not working to the recruiters who purchased LinkedIn Recruiter. They devalue unemployed people, because people who hire individuals prefer people who are currently working.

So the two minds are definitely network, definitely promote yourself as being someone who’s working and however, don’t make a change to your profile. But if asked, ‘Are you still working,’ tell them the truth that you’re not currently working. If you have a completion date, let’s say because you’ve got severance and you’re still on payroll, you’re still working. You’re still employed. You’re on payroll.

However, once that happens, make sure you make it clear. ‘I stopped working such and such.’ ‘Why haven;t you updated your profile?’ ‘Because the algorithm is unkind to people who aren’t working. You can tell them that. It’s okay.
