How to Get Better at Interviewing, Networking . . . or Anything for That Matter! | JobSearchTV.com

I discuss a proven technique for getting better at interviewing, networking or anything! NOTE: The PDF is no longer available. I now have a book called “The Right Answers to Tough Interview Questions

Should I Confirm an Interview?

Today, I want to talk with you about how to get better.  It interviewing, networking… Almost anything, really.   Let me start by telling the story about a time when I was young… I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade in public school.  It was time to learn how to do cursive writing.  Up until that point, you did standard printing and written letters and there was a certain way to do cursive writing.   The teacher would show you how to write and “S” so that it touch the top-of-the-line And came down in a particular way.  Yada, yada, yada.  There were classes that were completely dedicated to practicing cursive writing.  There were kids in class who just had a knack for it and I didn’t.

With time and with effort, and with practice, I got pretty good at it.  There’s a lesson in it for you as a job hunter.   Somehow by the time we become adults, we start really practicing  at much of anything.  What was the last time you ever thought about the process of making a left turn?  There was a time where you used to sweat bullets when making a left turn.  Now it is 2nd nature to you.

Interviewing is much the same thing.  With interviewing, with networking, you can practice.   Here is how I was suggest that you practice.  I’m going to give you a suggestion that you don’t have to follow.  But, if you visit my website and go to the “books” tab there is a PDF of how to answer 64th coffee interview questions.  You can download the PDF or, you can ask a friend to compile a list of appropriate questions to ask you.  By the way, the suggested answers to the questions are in that PDF.

Leadership During Times of Extreme Fear

You sit with a friend as they randomly choose questions to ask you.  You start practicing your answers.  I will tell you that you will be all for the 1st time.  Isn’t it better to be lawful at a time where you are practicing for an interview instead of being on an interview?  I am going to encourage you. Have them ask a question.  You answer it..  You get feedback from them about what they heard.   Listen to it, not as criticism but as what feedback was intended for– a critique to help.

I know in the business world, Feedback is not always heard that way. Feedback is often a dagger in the heart.  But here, someone is trying to help you by making suggestions to you about how you sounded, how your answer compared to the one that I suggest.  Your answer may be better but consider it as a guide for being more effective.   Download the PDF.

 Practice.  Do better at it..

The same is true of networking.  You may be Introduced to someone at a networking event.

“Hi!  This is Jeff.  Jeff, this is whatever your name is . . . ” You certainly don’t want to glowing opportunity to meet someone.  Practice.  Practice what you’re going to say with someone, get feedback as to how it sounds.  You sound confident because people with competence are always accepted more readily than the nervous one, right?  Isn’t that what you do?

Video Interview Myths

Practice what it is you might say at a networking event and circle it before you get into a salary negotiation.  Practice with someone so that in this way, you have an expectation as to what is going to happen and you are going to rehearse what you are going to say.

I will do salary negotiation coaching with people.  I do charge for it, of course But you can order it at my website, as well. Practice is going to help you be more effective.  Can I guarantee the outcome?  Of course, not.  But I can assure you that you will be much more effective and with time and with practice, your interviews are going to get a lot better.  Can I guarantee the outcome?  Of course, not.But I can assure you that you are going to be a lot more effective and, with time, and with practice .  Your interviews are going to become completely 2nd nature.

So, while you are job hunting, every week get together with a friend you could be the same one.  It could be a different one.   Try to practice with them so that you can be ready when the real game starts.
