When Is the Best Day and Time to Negotiate Salary? | JobSearchTV.com

When I did recruiting, I didn’t track the best days to do it. I knew the worst day. I found research on the subject that I think will help you.

Project Planning Your Job Search

When is the best day and time to negotiate salary? Yeah, this is interesting because I know, I worked in recruiting for many, many years. And I wouldn’t really pay attention to this other than to know Monday morning was terrible. And Friday, late afternoon, allowed them to get away for the weekend, build up their ability to say no, and then come in Monday morning to reject it because they didn’t want to deal with this anymore. They struggled with it over the weekend. Also, there’s no reaction time on a Friday afternoon. They can’t get to anyone that they need to get approvals from. So I knew Friday afternoon wasn’t good.

So to me, the correct answer is a Thursday or a Friday. Friday am and this became confirmed when I looked at two articles, one from Psychology Today where a McGill psychologist commented that she thought Thursday into Friday was good. And another one in Forbes–This one didn’t have any related research  but the author commented intuitively, ‘I believe it’s Friday mid morning.’

She also said, if you work on Wall Street, don’t do it at 10 o’clock when the markets open. Wait till are closer to [10:30]/11 to do it because this way, if there’s any craziness that happens with a market open, then you can avoid getting into the manager’s bad mood from that instance.

Now, I’ll finally edit and say most people need to be caffeinated. So don’t do it first thing when they might be under caffeinated. Wait until they have some in their system and pick a time that they works with their rhythms.
