Video Interview Mistakes: Glare Off Your Glasses | JobSearchTV.com
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
As someone who wears glasses, I am very aware that the glare from my glasses interferes with people connecting with me. You need to be aware of it, too.
Finding Purpose and Meaning at Work And Avoiding Toxic Environments
If you’re someone who wears glasses, one of the bad things that you can do is have glare off your glasses, whether that’s in person, or on camera. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me to provide no BS coaching advice for them. And that can be involved with a job search, hiring more effectively, management, leadership, dealing with workplace issues. And interviewing is one of those territories, I know I have an expertise.
As someone who wears glasses, I’m very aware of the effect that glare has on people who are watching me. For example, I use a ring light, because at certain times of day, it’s too dark in my office. And when I’m recording, and if I tilt my head back, you’ll probably notice this glare on my glasses derived from the ring lights. But it brightens my face. So I’ve got to do something.
One of the things that you can do is not point the ring light toward you. You point it at a wall so it bounces off you . . . off onto your face, rather than actually, in my case, I have a window directly in front of me. I bounce it off the side of the window frame. It comes on to my face; I’m pretty well illuminated. Not perfect, but pretty good, right?
And then to ensure that I don’t get glare on my glasses, my head is tilted in a way so that you’re not seeing any glare, right? I’m looking directly at you. And no glare on the glasses. In an in person interview, just be aware of overhead lighting, and whether or not that might be creating glare. Lights directly over you as might exist in a small office can be a problem. So just be aware of how the glasses hit. And you might just simply say to an interviewer, ‘I hope I’m not giving you any glare off my glasses.’ If they say ‘yeah, there’s a little bit,’ you’ve diffused that they can’t be distracted by it.
The thing I want to point out is people want to see eyes. Eyes are a way of creating connection. That’s what this whole thing is about. Making sure that you’re able to connect with the audience so that they feel you they get you, they connect with you. And connection is a big part of the effectiveness of interviewing.
So don’t think this is trivial. It happens to be important. And a glare will create a block between you and the other person.
