Cities Stung by Great Resignation Hike Wages, Just as Recession Looms
An article released by Bloomberg reported that, “Job openings are hovering near record highs for state and local governments. Their payrolls have shrunk by about 634,000 jobs compared to February 2020 levels, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.” In addition, ” eligible employees are accelerating retirement plans, the highest level since 2009.” The headline suggests that the issue comes as a result of the great resignation. I replied suggesting a second reason.

Whether you agree with it or not, there was a huge public policy decision that also made it difficult for the public sector to keep their workforce intact–the requirement that their employees be vaccinated. Don’t just blame it on The Great Resignation/Reshuffle. Don’t ignore public policy as being one the reasons. Looking at one city, New York, 2300 in hospitals, 500 in the FDNY, 1430 in administrative jobs plus more than 1000 paraprofessionals that I found as part of a quick Google search. Don’t ignore public policy as being part of the reason for the issue.
