The Last Gasp Hail Mary Negotiating Technique
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
This technique is not ideal. It may have consequences after you join AND if you want this job and have reached an impasse, try it!
Myths About HR and Negotiating Better
I want to talk with you about a negotiating technique. I’m going to call it the last gasp Hail Mary, negotiating approach, negotiating technique. And it really is. It’s not ideal. Hopefully you’ve gotten to a point in your conversations where the two of you have come to a mutual agreement. But if they’re laying pressure, this is really the last gasp.
So here’s what you say. ‘My wife, husband, partner, they/them won’t sign off on my taking this offer. They just think it’s too low.’ Or ‘there’s a mentor or coach that I work with. They won’t affirm that I should take this offer because they think the money is too low.’
Now, why do I say this is a last gasp, because you’re not being the decider. You’re outsourcing the image of this to someone else. I’m not saying that they actually did this. But you’re saying to the employer, that they did this. And thus the employer can respond by saying, ‘Don’t make your own decisions.’
‘I like you probably have trusted advisors that I rely upon. And my wife, husband, partner, my mentor, my coach, my whoever it is that you’ve represented to this organization is someone I rely upon who has my interests at heart. So I’ll just simply say, I’d like to say yes. If we can get to this number, I’d really appreciate it. They’ll sign off. I’ll commit to joining.’
You see what I mean? Not ideal. It’s basically a begging approach, which I’m never fond of. AND it may scar you a little bit at the beginning of joining an organization. But what’s more important to you– ego, image, money? Your choice. I’m not telling you to do this, but it’s an option. If you’d really like to join this may be a way to get the money that you want.
