Maybe you need to stall for another interview to come to fruition. Maybe you have another offer and you want to play one against the other. Here’s the easiest way to buy some time.

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm the head coach for a site called JobSearchCoachingHQ. com. I worked in executive recruiting for more than 40 years; filled a ton of positions, plus consulting assignments nationally. And I know this subject really well.

This video is about the easiest way to buy time when you're at the negotiation phase. Now, let me be clear, the entire interview process is part of where they negotiate compensation. Your first interview with HR. They're asking how much you're making (in a jurisdiction where its legal still), how much you're looking for, are you willing to be flexible, that's negotiating for them. Every time you're conceding a point, you have to give yourself a hedge, so don't just instantly agree.

Now, when we're at the actual phase where "We're making you an offer. We think it's a really good one." and it isn't, there are lots of different negotiating tactics. But I'd like to buy time for you, especially if there's a situation where you're interview with someone else and you're on a final interview there, and you want to buy some time for yourself to see what they come up with, and see if you can get that offer. Or maybe you have an offer from one and an offer from a second and you're trying to play both off against one another and you need to buy some time to to negotiate. Here's the easiest way to do it.

"We're making you an offer is for y number of dollars. And what do you think, what do you think you're gonna take it?"

That's the behavior that they have. They don't use those words but they're trying to get you to accept the offer. And you can watch my video "The Easiest Way to Negotiate a Higher Salary for Yourself. " And this is the stall tactic when you're playing two firms off against one another.

"Wow. Could you give me an idea of what the benefits are, what they're going to cost?" Now, no HR recruiter's going to know that instantly, because you may be married, another person may be single, you may be married with or without children. You want to know what the cost is and what the options are,, right? They've got to schedule you for a conversation with corporate with some benefits person in the organization. And they may say, "Oh, we can cover that in orientation."

"Well, I don't want to wait till orientation. The cost of my coverage and what coverage I receive is an important factor for me considering whether wto accept the offer."

"You mean, benefits are more important than the job?"

"The job is more important. Whether I can afford to work for you because your insurance coverage is going to cost me a lot of money for very little coverage . . . That's also a factor in my thinking. So, I have choices, I want to know what it's going to cost to see if I net out better than where I am or worse off than where I am. "

Notice all you're doing is trying to get the benefits information and, as such, the impatient corporate recruiter or the impatient agency recruiter is going to try and push you into saying yes, or to make a commitment. All you want to ask for is the data and, as such, that's gonna buy you a couple of days, or as little as half a day for them to arrange for this.

Start getting on the phone with the other firm and start or, if you're thinking of accepting this one, start laying out your strategy. for how you want them to up the offer. I've got a lot of videos about that in the playlist related to salary negotiation. You can watch more there, but I'll simply say, this is the easiest way to slow them down and stall so that you can get what you want.
