Tell Me About a Time When Something Went Wrong at Work and You Took Charge | JobSearchTV.com

This is one of those tough interview questions that can be asked of people both had a senior level in the staff level.

Summary

The question I'm going to work with today is one that it's pretty clear. It's a behavioral interview question. It asks about a behavior that you've had previously and this one is geared towards leadership. You can always recognize the signal a behavioral interview question because it starts off with, "Tell me about a time when you . . . " and in this particular case, "tell me about a time when something went wrong at work, you took control to charge took action ..." something along those lines is what I'm looking for.
That really is the launch point. They want you to tell them a story and, again, following the format that I teach -- the story starts off with a situation, what the objective was, the action and the result and, in providing the result, you want to provide a metric for whatever impact was. That's a numerical measure of money saved, money earned, percent improvement, how you turned around the project and what the impact of your work was.
Now, if you're at a staff level, instead of this acronym of SOAR (situation, objective, action, result), I suggest situation, task, action ,result. Slightly different when you you are at a staff level than when you're at a leadership level.
So, what do they want to hear from you?
Number one is a time where you actually stepped up because a lot of people talk the talk and when asked the question like that, they provide a story that doesn't indicate that they've ever done it. So, they are listening for cues that indicate that you actually did step up, that you didn't take a back seat. In the course of working with other people that you actually stepped out front.
In telling the story what they don't want to hear is a lot of criticism. They don't want you complaining about your colleagues. They don't want you to get triggered emotionally and freaking out in front of them.
They want to have someone tell them a story that's clear, concise, and to the point that demonstrates that when the going gets tough, you step up. That, in a sense, that there's enthusiasm and passion and a commitment to lead no matter what's thrown at you . . . dare I say a little bit of bravery maybe. So, that's what they're listening for in your answering the question. Give it to them. It's really that simple.
If you don't, it's a void that they can fill in with their story about weakness and lack of suitability for leadership roles.

What do firms look for? Competence is only one thing. Everyone forgets about the other big thing. Here, I remind you.

Summary

The thing you're forgetting about in your interviews. I've talked to john hunters. I've talked to people I coach about this for years. It's not just simply about career coaching or job search coaching. It's in a lot of other venues in life that this really shows up.
What is it that you're forgetting about?
What you're forgetting about . . . It's not school where you're being graded on having the right answers, at least not all of it. The thing that you're forgetting about is that it's not who has the most answers or the most right answers who wins. It's the one who has the most right answers, who gives them a feeling that they can be believed and trusted. So, it's your ability to inspire confidence that you can help them that becomes so important and, unless you do that, you're competing with everyone else who's trying to get 100% on the test.
And how did that work for you in school? Some of you got great grades. That's terrific. And now that you're in the world of work, you understand that there's another dimension that's there.
The person who gets chosen for the plum assignment because they're friendly with your boss, the person who gets pushed out the door because everyone thinks they're incompetent even when they aren't.
So, I want to remind you, it's not about your grade on the interview. It's about your ability to inspire confidence that are the solution to what they need, . . . which is a feeling. It's a feeling that comes about, not because you got all the right answers, but how you carry yourself as a professional, how you carry yourself in the interviews, how you handle yourself throughout all your interactions with them that makes all the difference in the world.
So, don't forget that and let it show up in quote unquote the theater . . . the theater of interviewing. You are a performance artist on the stage, trying to give them that feeling. And if you don't like it, tough. That's the way of the world, folks.
And if you don't like it, adapt, try my way. I know it works because, after all, I filled so many positions in my career as a headhunter. I know this extra dimension makes all the difference in the world.
So, don't neglect it. Don't forget about it. Don't ignore.

You Are Missing Different Groups in Your Recruiting | No BS Hiring Advice


In this video, I point our 3 different groups most organizations do a terrible job of sourcing

Summary

I'm going to talk with those of you who are involved with hiring. And I'll start by saying, I worked in search for more than 40 years, and filled more than 1200 full time positions, plus consulting assignments. I now coach people, so I'm not you're trying to sell you recruiting business. What I'm here to do is to offer some very simple advice in a no BS kind of way because your hiring managers are screwing themselves out of their ignorance and their bigotry. So, there are a number of different groups that could be interviewed and could be hired and do great work for you.
I'll start off with the one group that, time and again, delivers results but for many of your managers, they're worried about nonsense. That group is older workers --seniors, individuals who are close to retirement age, whatever that means these days. They are generally older than the hiring manager and the story they tell themselves is that these people will not take direction, they're burned out tired has-beens. That's a simple way of putting it, right?
And it's a lie that they're telling themselves and you and HR needs to confront it because you're staring at productivity issues. You're staring at them, complaining that they're not seeing enough people and demographics are such that they can take 22 year olds from Gen Z who have no experience. They can do that. Their work ethic is very similar to the older generation.
I'll simply say that, you know, the studies that I've been seeing point to Gen Z as being like a clone of the Baby Boomers in terms of their work ethic. So what's the issue with the Boomers? if you're liking Gen Z, the Boomers actually have experience, they will take direction and they'll work hard. They're not rushing out to retirement because they can't afford it. So, that's one group that you're hiring managers should pay attention to.
Another one, for certain types of positions, are ex-offenders. You know, people who've been incarcerated. Now ex-offenders, as long as they're involved with social services, as well, will work very hard, do a lot of good work. They need certain types of training, and then they need certain types of supports in your organization. But it's a population that gets ignored and often can do jobs that you really need people to do because these are not people who've been trained for accounting and finance or technology. They are labor for a lot of your organizations. Don't neglect ex-offenders, even if you have to pay to train them because once they've trained, they will be loyal.
The third group is moms who are returning from maternity or raising kids, for that matter. This is a workforce that wants to work, has decided that they're ready to work and there are a lot of jobs that they can do and, as an HR professional, you need to fill jobs, right? And your hiring managers want very simple behaviors out of people. What's the cost of training to get someone up to speed on things that they did before? Not all that expensive believe it or not.
I don't care what field this person worked in. They can do the job with a certain amount of training. You can also, if you're paying for training, get them to commit to work for your organization for a certain period of time or be obligated to pay the firm back for that training. It's not difficult. Just don't go crazy with . . . "You have to work for us for three years or else you will have to pay us back."
Nonsense. Absolute nonsense. Don't do that kind of crap. Just amortize it out over the course of a year. If they leave the within the year. They owe you the money back.

Two of My People Leave at 6PM Every Day & I Don’t Like It! | No BS Management Advice


“I have two employees that usually leave work at 6 pm. They are good, but I don’t like that their commitment lasts for work hours only. What should I do as a CEO?”

Summary

I run into situations sometimes when I coach . . . They're absolutely hysterical. Let me just give you an example of one of from someone. I do this with their permission.
"I have two employees that usually leave work at 6 p.m. They are good, but I don't like that their commitment lasts for work hours only. What should I do as CEO?"
Now, I work with the assumption that this is a start-up organization, a smaller firm because at a large firm they'd never noticed this happening. So, let's work with the assumption it's a small firm and this person's throwing around their CEO title.
Now I have to ask a follow-up question because I give no BS advice, right? So, the follow-up question is how do you know they're only working during office hours? Seriously, how do you know that, with every sort of mobile device known to humanity, with every laptop that's out in the world today, how do you know?
I know, you know, their body isn't at work, but how do you know that they're not working? What do you think the wife, husband or partner thinks? I know you don't give a shit, even though you probably care about your wife or husband or partner.
But you know, they are entitled to that relationship, right? You didn't buy that. And then the last thing is only during work hours. Like that assumes that you understand that there's a non-work hours time available. And when is that supposed to exist?
You hire them for a job. You didn't hire them for slavery and that someone actually has this attitude at this day and age is insane to me. I've worked as a recruiter for startups; I've worked for smaller organizations. I understand that owners want to control their people. It's just the nature of things particularly in smaller firms.
But the reality is you don't own them. They're entitled to a life and you probably didn't explain your expectations to them when you hired them, did you.
So, I'll simply say that you may not like it. Tough shit! Seriously. Tough shit. You don't like it. You didn't tell them what you expected of them. They're leaving at six. What time are they getting in eight? Help me understand this because it is already a 10-hour day and that's not enough for you?
What statistics have shown time and again is more hours doesn't yield more productivity. If anything, there is a diminishing return on the productivity with time. People make more mistakes. We don't know the nature of the work these folks are doing. We just do know that they're leaving at 6:00 p.m. and you don't like it.
Well, if you want them to work more hours, pay them more. Seriously. Pay them more. See if they're willing to do it for more money because, again, I don't believe you ever told them what your expectations are and you're just sitting there clock-watching, not looking at what's reasonable.
Again, just to repeat, their bodies are leaving at 6:00 p.m. You don't know if they're working after hours from their home, but they're just there. They're just leaving the office and going home to work, spending a little time with their family or kids, putting them to sleep and then getting right back to work

Summary

I call is video, “the faster FASTEST way to find a new job” and it really is the fastest way. It can have a slight delay, hence why did the faster piece at the beginning but really it’s the fastest way to find a new job.

Do you want to hear it?

Okay, here goes.

Once you have decided it's time to look at other things, I want you pick up the phone and call your former boss, that man or woman that you worked for before who is now off at another organization and just simply say, “Jeff, I’ve decided it's time to move. I really loved working for you. I learned a lot from you period I had a great experience with you. I was so disappointed when you left. I understand everyone as to make professional choices, but I really miss working for you. Can you use me in your group, in your team (however you would want to describe the environment that you be working in).”

They may say, “YES” or “I can’t use you right now. Could you hold out for a couple months? I have a knew budget coming in,” or “I could take you on a September as a contractor initially, but then I can bring you on to staff.”

They may say, “I don’t think this is the kind of place . . . I I don’t think I can use you. I’m fully staffed and I have a great team here.”

“Is there someone in your organization that you could point me to or introduce me to who might be able to use someone like me?”

Hence, this really is cutting the line. It's getting into the situation very quickly and seeing if … I’ve seen so many people over the years been able do this over the years. You know the story, too.

So, instead of being a nice boy a nice girl and applying for jobs through human resources, just go to an old boss that you liked working for and see if this tactic will work. If it doesn’t, hey, it was one phone call and it took seven minutes.

They may remember at a point when they hear about something and come back to you, but, the end of the day, this really is the fastest way to find a new position.

LinkedIn Job Search Tips: Letting Recruiters Know You’re Open to a New Job | JobSearchTV.com


There is a simple way to let recruiters know that you are popen to a new job on LinkedIn AND, best of all, be favored in their search results!

I'm the head coach for JobSearchCoachingHQ.com and this is another video where I talk with you about ways to be more effective with LinkedIn with regard to your job search. This one is a very simple tip and that it signals to people who are searching for you, someone like you, that you are open to a new job. Let me show you how to do that.
On LinkedIn you go to your image up on top. See where it says me in the black ribbon. You click on that and you go to "settings and privacy. "Once you get the settings and privacy you click on privacy and then you scroll down to the area. . . Let's see now. I know it's a . . . Job seeking preferences. Let recruiters know you're open to opportunities. You click change and then you toggle it to the "yes" position. There will be a little color next to your name. . . Let's see what it looks like. So, that's saved and I'm going to go back to my profile and see what it looks like.
So bear with me. I've never done this before. Just because I don't really look for work before.
There we go.
And thus that icon tells recruiters that you're open to something new. This is not a big deal to do. It's just a very simple click. Before you do that, I would say turn off your notifications to people that you've made a change to your profile because many of you are connected to people that you work with. So turn that off first before you make the change to signal to recruiters that you're open to other things.

Repeatedly Rejected After The Final Interview? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1222 On today’s show, I speak to a job hunter who this has happened to several times and offer a possible reason.

Summary

p>I received the question through Quora that I thought was quite interesting that I'm going to share with you. The headline is, "I always get rejected in the final or pre-final phase of interviewing. What am I doing wrong?"

Basically, he describes a situation where he has been rejected 9 times already. In the last round of interviews, he was asked simple questions like what his hobbies were he answers them to the best of his ability in a very soft manner. That's the way he explains it. I'm not making it up.

So he talks in a soft manner. He doesn't know what mistakes he's making. But, ultimately, he knows he is making mistakes because he is being rejected. In another interview, he was asked if he has any questions and he responded by asking, "Would you suggest any areas where I need improvement?" He was told, "Be confident." It begs the question of what is going wrong for him?

I suspect this is a cultural thing, even though I don't know the ethnicity of the person involved or of the hiring manager but the classic scenario is that the hiring manager is perceived as being powerful; the potential employee who is very junior is, on the power scale, much lower. The result is that that power differential becomes very pronounced with a potential higher speaks in a soft manner.

Imagine them speaking with you in an interview and I'm talking very softly and the interpretation of the soft manner was lack of confidence. Understand that there are 2 major things that firms look for.

In my original article on the subject, I described is Cx5=PL. I'm going to simplify it.

Hopefully, a firm is looking for skills, competence. After all, they are trying to hire someone to fill a particular role. What does this person know? What can they do that fits our job? Skills competence.

Ultimately, the next thing that they are looking for is being inspired that you are the solution to a need. Part of that is demonstrating your knowledge, but the 2nd part of it is in your matter. For example, if you are talking to them and look into it a side. If you are not maintaining eye contact. If you are speaking softly. If your hands shake is perceived as being gentle (obviously I'm not talking about hand the breaking handshakes). If your manner doesn't make people feel confident that you know your subject, you will be rejected, as much as you may know, that is the extra ingredient.

I always tell people not to ask a question like that-- where can I improve? You know where you can improve. You brought up the subject of being soft-spoken for a reason. Understand that that is a variable that is within your control.

It may take practice. It may take effort on your part. I will relay a story from Toastmasters, the international speaking organization but I always encourage people to become involved with. The reason I do is because they offer you an opportunity to practice your speaking. It may be later in your career that you may be asked to present something on a topic. They have a function in this section of the meeting that they call Table Topics where you are asked to speak for 1 to 2 minutes extemporaneously on the subject. You don't know what that subject is going to be until you are asked a question.

The notion that you can practice speaking is a great opportunity. You will be critiqued afterwards on that one to 2 minute speech that you gave.. They are very supportive. They always start off with praise for what you did, especially as a beginner. They want to encourage you to keep working on your perceived deficiencies and teach you areas for improvement. You will absorb these. You will practice. You will get better.

For the soft-spoken job hunter who believes that that soft-spoken Dennis is holding them back on getting a job or in advancing in their new job, it is important to practice speaking and speaking extemporaneously because you are just asked to do that all the time. After all, what you're doing is giving 30 second speech.

If someone is asking how the project is going, you are giving a 45 second to 1 minute speech. What you are trying to do is communicate ideas to people that allow you to satisfy their interests (if the rule their interests are either your boss or someone you're providing help to). Recognize that that opportunity speaking to practice speaking is so important for you in your career because, at the end of the day, even if you are hired, do you want to stay in the same job for the next 40 years of your life? 30 years of her life. It is a long time!

Like I said, firms want to be inspired that you can be the solution to their need. Practice speaking. Practice speaking up. Get to Toastmasters. Great story from their!

There was a man who spoke at the international gathering of Toastmasters. He was an individual who had a stutter up until the age of 4. It was from the Middle East (I believe Saudi Arabia). He gave an inspiring 10 minute speech that brought down the house. This is a tough audience at the international gatherings of Toastmasters.

Here's a man who didn't speak and wouldn't speak without a starter until the age of 4. Developmentally delayed and he was funny, he was tender and he clearly had control of a large group of people and he won.

You can achieve the same thing yourself. You can practice-- that's really what it involves. Practice. Practice getting better at what you do. Make the mistakes now when it is less costly.

Right now, you may not get your 1st job or your 2nd job because you are not well practiced. Do you want to keep doing the same mistakes? Of course not. You want to get better at things and not stay stuck in the same paradigm that you are in of being confined to certain types of opportunities because you don't perform well in situations where you are being judged by others.

Get yourself out and about. Practice speaking. Think in terms of ways that you can communicate that inspire confidence and get better.
