EP 1428 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to become known on LinkedIn as a subject matter expert and explains how to do it.

Summary

I'm a big fan of the LinkedIn blogging platform. If you go to your LinkedIn profile and look at the search box across, not the very top, the one on your homepage, you'll notice a pen or pencil and if you click that, there is a place where you can write articles, post videos and podcasts... Articles, videos and audios that you want to share with people on LinkedIn.

When all is said and done, as I talked about this, a lot of you are saying to yourself, "I'm no good at this. Who is going to want to read my stuff?" There are people who are following you with whom you are connected who will want to read your stuff they want to get your ideas. Along with the idea of it being no good, frankly, it probably won't be at the beginning. As time progresses, you will get better. Like everything else you've done in your life and your career, the more you do it, the better you get.

You'll start reading other people's articles, watch their videos and listen to their podcasts and notice the ones that you like and don't like. You'll notice people who are influencers. LinkedIn is cherry pick them and you will see that they have tens of thousands of views and, sometimes, thousands of comments. Don't compare yourself to them.

What will happen is that they will people will start to follow you based upon what they say, who are not even connected with. They are going to be interested. The 1st time you write or publish, you may only get 10 or 20 people or 5 people reading what you wrote. The more you do it, the more people start noticing it and start reading it.

After you have written it, there is a place underneath the headline where you can share it on social media. Sharon on Facebook. Shared on Twitter. Sharon on Google+. On LinkedIn, there are 2 ways to share it. One way is to share it with your connections; another way is to share with the public. Start with your connections and, at the same time, share 2 groups that you remember. From there, come back and share it with the public. Share with the public several times over time because people log on to LinkedIn at different times and they may not see the 1st post because they were not light at that time. But they may see the 2nd 1 or the 4th 1. Don't do within 10 minutes of one another. Wait at least 6 hours before you re-share it.

At the end of the day, what you want to be doing is building a following of people who see you as a subject matter expert. At this point, my 1st level connections I think I have about 14,000. I have close to 16,000 were following me. That includes connections and other people who have chosen to follow me.

You can create the same momentum for yourself. My message about job search is a specific one. You are going to have one about something completely different. Get out there and get seen as a subject matter expert because, at the end of the day, opportunities are going to come to you because people see you as being an expert.

EP 1375 Do HR professionals cross reference the applications they receive with other job openings they have?

Summary

I received a wonderful question. "Do HR professionals cross reference applications they receive with other openings that they have?"

The person that is writing is a technology professional and they continue on by saying, "since some positions have skills in common, do HR professionals cross reference applications with other jobs they have available and of applied for a role that might also be a fit for some other role?"

I'm going to give you the most blunt direct answer because I'm in no BS kinda guy. The answer is… It depends!

I know what they should do but here's the practicality to it. Each HR person is being graded on their performance against certain metrics that the firm has defined for them. Their job is to fill positions, not refer to someone else who feels positions.

It depends on how the system was set up. It depends on which person and which job you applied to. Let me go back to my 1st point about contacting the firm. Never EVER apply for a job through an applicant tracking system because that just puts you into the dreaded black hole. That means your resume is dependent upon whether the data dictionary (the definition of terms set up in the applicant tracking system) and your resume matchup.

Assuming that they do you actually get to a human being, the next thing is whether that person will actually think of a colleague or focus on their own job 1st? The answer is they are going to focus own their job first, then, MAYBE refer you to that other person in their HR organization for consideration. After all, they get no points for this; the other person does. Thus, they go sequentially rather than concurrently. After all, they don't want to have 2 or 3 managers competing over one person. That makes it harder for the firm so they go sequentially evaluating for one job before releasing you for a 2nd, or possibly, 1/3. From there, it is always going to be hit or miss, depending upon your performance on the 1st interview.

Let's assume you do well on the 1st interview and get to the hiring manager (or get through the technical interview and being brought back to meet the hiring manager, to use the example from the original question) after getting through the technical interview and they assess you for where your strengths really are, you get to the hiring manager and then are turned down. From there, they go back to your strengths as perceived on the technical interview and MAYBE you get referred to the other job. MAYBE you don't get referred because your technical skills were really best in that 1st area and not as good a fit for the 2nd or 3rd group.

Maybe you washed out on the 1st interview because you steak up the joint on what you claim to be very good at and they'll see a reason to bring you back for something else.

As a result, there are way too many variables to count on HR to refer you for another position. Those variables start off with:
1. Whether your resume actually makes it through
2. They're going to qualify you for one job at a time rather than multiples.
3. How your performance was on the 1st interview.
4. The mood of the HR person as to whether or not they make the referral

I know some people would disagree with me. "I would definitely refer." That is not my experience. I have heard stories from HR people who are not going to make the referral because it is not in their interest to do so.

There are way too many variables. I wouldn't count on it.

Stop Asking “Tell Me About Yourself” | No BS Hiring Advice


“Tell me about yourself” stopped working as an interview question years ago. Instead ask this one. You will be able to rule out people much faster.

Summary

One thing you learn when you prepare people for interviews is that somewhere, somewhere along the line, someone's going to ask an opening question like, "tell me about yourself--" you know, that basic open-ended question.
Now, if you're in HR (I'm going to focus in on HR and small business owners), because for those of you who are in large organizations, and you're working as a hiring manager, you've got people screaming for you. So, this is really for the first phone call, the first in-person interview that I want you to flip this around. You see, most of the time, firms have gotten lazy and they use, "Tell me about yourself,"and they do. You know, they're rehearsed with an answer that's pretty well prepared. I've created videos to help people around this . . . 10s of thousands of views. Lots of stuff I've created to help people answer a question like this. Other people have done the same thing, too. So, if they can't answer the question, they're obviously morons. The real thing comes down to what can you ask that's going to help you assess whether or not this person will fit your organization?
That's not really where most firms start off with. They go through the auto biographical stuff of how "how'd you wind up here today?" That is another question that firms may ask which I think is more textured, but I want to help you rule the people out quickly. This can be in the phone interview.
So, you get a resume; the background looks pretty decent. Here's the opening question I want to ask now after the chit chat.
"Hi, is this Jeff Altman? Hi, my name is so and so from such and such firm. Is this a good time to talk? Yeah, terrific! Now, we received your resume and we respect people a lot. We don't want to waste your time in any way, so, give us a sense of what's going to be important to you in the next job or organization. What are you going to need to see or hear to believe it's a good choice for you. Because if we can't deliver it, we don't want to waste your time and if we can refer you to another organization or to another position, we are thrilled to do so. We probably can't, but we'd like to at least try. So what's going to be important to you in the next job or organization? What will you need to see or hear to believe it's a good choice for you?"
Now, they may say, "I want to feel happy here."
Oh! What's going to help you feel happier?"
"Interesting work."
"What kind of interesting work would that be?"
You want to spend time talking with them about what they're looking for because this is going to flush out, number one, they're not prepared for this question, right? And it's going to flush out a lot of the insane people who you might be evaluating because, you know, invariably, there are problems. You see, the thing that firms have gotten so complacent about is that they think the system can't be changed. The result winds up being. . . it depends on the statistics you see, it's as few is one out of two hiring managers has buyer's remorse within the first year about someone that they hired. I've seen this as high as 75%. So, we know the interviewing isn't working. We've got to try something different.
Part of it is unreasonable expectations. All you normally do is try to figure out, "does this person have the skills to go my job?" That's what you always do. So you take the hammer out, and you're hammering it over and over again. But you're not finding out about the human being behind that.
What makes people successful employees? Yes, there's a degree of skill that's involved and you'll evaluate for that. But there's also the human being and, with a human being, it is a problem. They're going to wind up failing, and they're going to fail you and you, as a hiring manager, are going to be impacted by that. You're going to waste an enormous amount of time trying to manage this person who should be inspired. I'm not going to differentiate inspiration and management another time. I've done that in other videos, but I'll just simply say, where you have problem people, it's normally about the human being, it's not about their skills.
You know how to evaluate for the skill, but you have to learn how to flush up the human being. Again, just start asking, "what's most important to you in the next job or organization? What would you need to see or hear to believe it's a good choice?"
Now, again, happiness, money, authority recognition, status. These are going to be variations on some of the things that you'll hear, but explore them with them right away.
Don't waste time on finding out skills, only to hire someone who's going to be a malcontents because the environment doesn't work for them. Flush this out early. So, I hope you found this helpful. Try this out for a week or to see how it works for you.

The Self Assessment Profile for The Executive Search Firm | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1372 If you want to play in the big leagues, you will probably need to change your thinking about the self-assessment the executive search firm sends to you.

Summary

I want to talk with you folks today, particularly if you are a senior professional, and are working with an executive search firm. To be clear, I'm not talking about a contingency firm that is saying to you, "we do executive search, too." I'm talking about the real deal firms. You're up for an SVP role or a C suite position of some kind and you're dealing with "the big boys," and "the big girls." Often, they will send the document to you that requires a self-assessment. How do you respond to this?

I had a conversation with someone I coach received a three-page document that he was asked to complete before he met the partner who is responsible for the search. His 1st reaction was to blow through it pretty quickly. I said, "Stop! Your job here is to make the case for your candidacy. They have developed a specification for the client. They sat down with them and met them. You spoken with the head of corporate HR prior to speaking with them. You have an advantage over some of the others. But, at the end of the day, they use this is a legitimate screening tool AND it can be used as the basis for their presentation of you to their client for how you fit. Why would you blow through this?"

I decided and persuaded him to take this three-page document and turn it into 7 - 8 pages in length. It's more than 100% increase in length, not being on the questions that seem pretty straightforward (questions like, "what's your compensation?" How long is that going to take? 3 lines? 4 lines?") but on questions that go to the heart of your ability to demonstrate how you fit the role and demonstrate your communications style.

If you want to blow through that, you are not ready for the big leagues. If you want to look this is the eyes of how the search firm is going to view you, not just simply by what you say but by what you don't say, but what you communicate, by what your style of communications is, then you are ready to play at this level.

Don't give short shrift to this because in the past you were less experience than thought this was a trivial exercise and thought someone should call you and talk to you. To play in the big leagues you have to deal with how the big boys and big girls want to be dealt with. They want your best take on how your background fits in. You're going to take the time to reflect and answer the questions in detail to give them great material to make the case for why you fit this role.

DON'T BLOW IT because there is nothing worse from your vantage point, then to not take something like this seriously and then wind up losing an opportunity because you were dismissive of it. That's a mistake. Don't make it.

It depends on what you mean by the word, "places."  After all, I'm sure there are recruiters in every state that will help you find the job.  There are people that will help you find a job.  If you mean government agencies, which is what I suspect you are asking about, yes, I'm sure there are agencies that do occupational training and, perhaps, an Office of Employment and Training that will help you find work.  It used to be called Unemployment.  These agencies will "help you find a job."  

What did they really do?  They will point you to a computer, tell you to do a search on their website and other websites to identify positions.

Do you think that's the way that's the way to help you find the job?
They may have pamphlets and other material for you to read (and probably not follow through on) that are designed to help you find the job, but are basic.

If you are the beginner level in your job search, you may need that kind of material to help you find work.

If you are a more experienced person, respectfully, , what I have seen of the information that is provided won't be good enough to help you. Certainly, they are not going to go out and "find jobs for you." Their job is to process people, not help you find the job.

Thus, the answer the question is, "it depends." For most individuals, it is very basic stuff that won't help you very much.

What you need to do take charge of your career, learn what you need to in order to find work now and in the future, and think of your career as a business that you own, not a him bdicated 2 other people.

It's kind of like investing in mutual funds – – you handle your money to other people who you think no better, but do they really? Or a financial adviser? Do you think some of them really know better?

At the end of the day, you may not get a lot out of these Office of Training facilities and other places that the government has set up. You will get some amount of advice from recruiting firms. You can find people who can help you. There are nonprofit groups that can help. But you need to be in charge of your career,

EP 1353 This scenario happens pretty frequently , and if it is happening to you now, I hope you find this helpful.

Summary

"How do you get a new job after being self-employed for 20 years?"
As many of my answers go, it depends.

It depends on the field that you are in. The answer is going to be different if you owned a retail store versus being an insurance broker versus being a contract consultant working in a number of clients. Let me give some general answers that will be part of the framework.

Assuming you are not a self-employed contractor type, that you have owned the business for a number of years, the idea is to take advantage of a number of the resources that you have that the average individual isn't going to have.

For example, you have a relationship with an accountants and he or she has relationships with other accountants, your networking should start with your accounting firm, your audit firm, your CPA… "I'm thinking of closing up and I think it's time for me to find a job. Please keep your eyes and ears open for me for other opportunities." If they're smart, they will.

Vendors
Start with your accountant, your insurance agent, all the vendors that you've worked with, make it clear that you're not going bankrupt and that you will be a deadbeat with your bills and asked them to introduce you to people who might be interested in what you do.

So you start with professionals and then you start to go to your extended network. 

For example, if you belong to a BNI chapter and speak to the other members that you're thinking of hanging it up, they will help you a lot, they will be an antenna for you in your local community for helping you get introductions.

Tell everyone – – friends, neighbors-- there is no embarrassment anymore. What you are doing is using your network of relationships in order to receive introductions to others.

There is a classic story and job hunting that I heard many years ago whose cleaning person introduce someone to her husband, who is the president of a bank. The reason the person was cleaning homes was as part of the spiritual practice. She didn't need the money but wanted to maintain humility.  Eventually, the person gave her resume, after all, this was the cleaning person and he didn't know her husband was the head of a bank.  After all, who could she possibly know they could help him?

That's why you tell everyone. You tell your banker (not the idiot at the desk. The person that you had a relationship with for a number of years, not the rotating 24-year-old who sits at a desk and opens accounts; obviously, there is a difference between the stereotype of the 24-year-old that I just used and others who are extraordinary). Start talking to everyone, making sure that they know.

Obviously, at some point you will need a resume. In constructing the resume, you will want to think, not in terms of being an owner, because, as an owner, unless you are buying another business or manage another business, you will be joining in a staff for all and, depending upon the staff role that you are interviewing for, make sure that your resume speaks to that part of your background.

So, lots of dynamics here and I want to offer a few points I thought might help.

This is one of those tough interview questions that can be asked of people both had a senior level in the staff level.

Summary

The question I'm going to work with today is one that it's pretty clear. It's a behavioral interview question. It asks about a behavior that you've had previously and this one is geared towards leadership. You can always recognize the signal a behavioral interview question because it starts off with, "Tell me about a time when you . . . " and in this particular case, "tell me about a time when something went wrong at work, you took control to charge took action ..." something along those lines is what I'm looking for.
That really is the launch point. They want you to tell them a story and, again, following the format that I teach -- the story starts off with a situation, what the objective was, the action and the result and, in providing the result, you want to provide a metric for whatever impact was. That's a numerical measure of money saved, money earned, percent improvement, how you turned around the project and what the impact of your work was.
Now, if you're at a staff level, instead of this acronym of SOAR (situation, objective, action, result), I suggest situation, task, action ,result. Slightly different when you you are at a staff level than when you're at a leadership level.
So, what do they want to hear from you?
Number one is a time where you actually stepped up because a lot of people talk the talk and when asked the question like that, they provide a story that doesn't indicate that they've ever done it. So, they are listening for cues that indicate that you actually did step up, that you didn't take a back seat. In the course of working with other people that you actually stepped out front.
In telling the story what they don't want to hear is a lot of criticism. They don't want you complaining about your colleagues. They don't want you to get triggered emotionally and freaking out in front of them.
They want to have someone tell them a story that's clear, concise, and to the point that demonstrates that when the going gets tough, you step up. That, in a sense, that there's enthusiasm and passion and a commitment to lead no matter what's thrown at you . . . dare I say a little bit of bravery maybe. So, that's what they're listening for in your answering the question. Give it to them. It's really that simple.
If you don't, it's a void that they can fill in with their story about weakness and lack of suitability for leadership roles.

What do firms look for? Competence is only one thing. Everyone forgets about the other big thing. Here, I remind you.

Summary

The thing you're forgetting about in your interviews. I've talked to john hunters. I've talked to people I coach about this for years. It's not just simply about career coaching or job search coaching. It's in a lot of other venues in life that this really shows up.
What is it that you're forgetting about?
What you're forgetting about . . . It's not school where you're being graded on having the right answers, at least not all of it. The thing that you're forgetting about is that it's not who has the most answers or the most right answers who wins. It's the one who has the most right answers, who gives them a feeling that they can be believed and trusted. So, it's your ability to inspire confidence that you can help them that becomes so important and, unless you do that, you're competing with everyone else who's trying to get 100% on the test.
And how did that work for you in school? Some of you got great grades. That's terrific. And now that you're in the world of work, you understand that there's another dimension that's there.
The person who gets chosen for the plum assignment because they're friendly with your boss, the person who gets pushed out the door because everyone thinks they're incompetent even when they aren't.
So, I want to remind you, it's not about your grade on the interview. It's about your ability to inspire confidence that are the solution to what they need, . . . which is a feeling. It's a feeling that comes about, not because you got all the right answers, but how you carry yourself as a professional, how you carry yourself in the interviews, how you handle yourself throughout all your interactions with them that makes all the difference in the world.
So, don't forget that and let it show up in quote unquote the theater . . . the theater of interviewing. You are a performance artist on the stage, trying to give them that feeling. And if you don't like it, tough. That's the way of the world, folks.
And if you don't like it, adapt, try my way. I know it works because, after all, I filled so many positions in my career as a headhunter. I know this extra dimension makes all the difference in the world.
So, don't neglect it. Don't forget about it. Don't ignore.
