Stupid Job Search Mistakes: Putting All Your Eggs in One Basket

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Too often, job hunters make the mistake are putting all their eggs in one basket. This is why it’s a mistake.

Branding Your Relevance

I know you know this, but putting all your eggs in one basket, in one job in one opportunity is a huge mistake. Let me explain why. What does the metaphor, putting your eggs in one basket mean? Answer. If you think back to what that was back in the day, if a farmer carried all their eggs in one basket and they stumbled, all of them broke. In job search, what that translates into is this one opportunity . . . I’m only zeroed in on that.  I’m not doing any more marketing myself. I don’t have an offer yet. I’m not going out to try and get more interviews. You know, this is it! And then if that doesn’t materialize, you’re out of luck.

It’s so important to consistently be looking at other things so that this way you don’t get stuck. You don’t miss out on stuff. You don’t wind up being behind the eight ball (another metaphor) and lose everything and have to start from scratch  if this one job that you really want doesn’t materialize.

Instead, keep looking until such time as you have the offer from that one firm, that one organization, whatever. And if you get it great! If you don’t you haven’t cost yourself time and thus money by focusing in completely on that one job and losing.
