Recruiters Are Burned Out, And Gen Z Job Demands Aren’t Helping

A Bloomberg article entitled, “Recruiters Are Burned Out, And Gen Z Job Demands Aren’t Helping: Hiring professionals are exasperated by bold pay requirements and fickleness from young job applicants amid Great Resignation turbulence” lamented about how hard recruiters have it. You can read the full article using the link.

“Hirers across industries describe a recurring scenario: A candidate in their 20s or early 30s applies for a position and requests compensation and benefits incommensurate with experience.”

I offered a reply, “We all understand that companies and their recruiters, as well as third party recruiters want nice compliant people who shut up and do what they are told. The beauty in the article comes from the third party recruiter who complains when someone finds that the job requires more stress, effort and demands than they were led to believe or were told and replies, “You told us a number, and we exceeded that number.’” I worked in search for many years before transitioning to career coaching. Companies and recruiters seek commitment early in the interview process. Screeners seek what someone is looking for in compensation in the first conversation after someone has seen an ad or had a position described by a recruiter but before the person has met with their manager, the team, found out the realities of the job and the people they will work with. Is it any wonder that younger professionals, in particular, change their mind when they learn the reality of the work and environment rather than the sanitized, homogenized, and pasteurized information they’ve been told? This whining occurs with every new generation entering the workplace. The Boomers were hippies before they became “OK Boomer.”

“GenX didn’t know what it wanted or cared about. Older Millennials were coddled and had helicopter parents. Now we have these population cohorts. It reminds me of the lyric to the old Broadway song, “Why can’t they be like we were. Perfect in every way.”
