Putting Yourself Out There Doesn’t Only Apply to Dating
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
When most of us think of putting ourselves out there, we think of dating. It doesn’t just apply there.
Recruiters Are Not Your Friends
When most of us think of putting yourself out there, we usually think in terms of dating. You know, someone’s broken up with you or you’ve broken up with someone and it’s time to get back out into the marketplace and start dating again. That’s the normal reference to putting yourself out there. But it doesn’t just apply to dating. It also applies to job search, and being in the position where you become more visible.
Now, what does it mean from a career standpoint? What does it mean from a job search standpoint? Well, it often just involves sharing, contributing, helping– three things that most of us like to do that don’t require a tremendous amount of effort.
So, sharing can be sharing information or articles, or blog posts, or being interviewed for a podcast or YouTube channel. Those are for more ambitious people, obviously. But sharing posts that you think are interesting helps to make you more visible. Contributing, offering your ideas, which could be a comment on someone else’s post. Helping– there are millions of ways to help. But fundamentally, you share, you contribute, you help, and you put yourself out there in a way that people get to know, like, trust, and respect you.
So the long the short of it is, if you don’t do things like this, you’re generally invisible. In this day of social media, it’s so much easier to develop your reputation by putting yourself out in this way. It doesn’t require a lot of effort, but it can have huge results over the course of time.
