How Recruiters Steal Your Best People: You Give Them Awards

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
A search professional I know told me a story awhile back about how he would find out who his clients’ competitors’ best people were and how he would steal them.

How Recruiters Steal Your Best People: They Get Fed Up with Being Lied to

I’ve been doing a series of YouTube #shorts about how recruiters steal your best people. This story is too long for it to be a #short. That’s only one minute. This is a good little story, and you need to be aware of it because this really happens. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS coaching, and career advice globally because I help that make things easier for people. That ease can involve with hiring more effectively, job search, managing, and leading better, anything related to a person in their career. Here’s a fun story.

I was talking to an overseas recruiter, European-based. And he was telling me how .there’s the classic statement, you’re either a client or you’re a source. And he was working closely with one firm. And there were three competitors in the local area, He befriended someone within the organization in HR, who would give him a heads up in advance of who was receiving particular awards within the firm. And at this organization, what would happen normally is this person would get a plaque done publicly, they’d be taken out to lunch or dinner by the president of the organization. There was a lot of attention fawned on them.

Here’s what this recruiter did,. Having found out the award winners a few months in advance, he would call them and, and talk with them. And what he would tell them is, ‘you know, it’s pretty common in organizations like yours, I’m not saying it’s your firm, but in organizations like yours, there are two things that happen. Number one is they hand you a piece of plastic that they call an award. Nice. And number two is you got taken out the lunch, maybe it’s dinner, but you get taken out for a meal by the president. It’s lovely, except there’s no more money. And if this starts to happen to you, just be aware, I’d love to help you move on to another organization.

And lo and behold, came to the end of the year. And that’s exactly what happened. The person got his plaque person got their, lunch or dinner. And they were on the phone with him, telling them “it happened.” And he would move them to another organization. This happens more often than you can imagine.

How Recruiters Steal your Best People: You Never Counter Their Offer

And I’ll simply say, it’s important to give people attention, but the right kind of attention. The plaque with no money, the lunch with the senior person? Who cares? They’ve got bills to pay. And right now we’re living through inflationary times. And people need compensation.

So I’ll simply say to you, one of the ways they steal is they have inside info, they have inside information on who’s getting attention, who’s going to get promoted, and certainly eventually it winds up on LinkedIn. And they’re talking about the wonderful time,  the attention that they’ve gotten from their organization and their success over the year, how they’ve been recognized. But recruiters are all over it.
