A recent survey by the Pew Research Center suggests that the gender pay gap may partly be due to differences in negotiating salaries. It found that most workers did not ask for higher pay than what was initially offered the last time they were hired. But men were slightly more likely than women to ask for more. Among those who did ask for higher pay, women were more likely than men to receive only the initial offer. The survey also said that men were more likely to be satisfied with the initial offer. And here’s the big kicker, younger workers were the least likely to feel comfortable negotiating higher pay.
Just simply ask them “can you do a touch better?” Sometimes they’ll just give you a little bit more.
