EP 1619 Can That Affect My Reputation?

Read Full Transcript

The question for today is, "Can I change from job to job until I find one that I really like? Can that affect my reputation?" This is probably asked by a less experienced job hunter. I have no idea where in the world this person is; they did not reveal that to me. I am going to give a US-centric answer to the question.

You can do whatever you want. I mean that. You can do whatever you want. AND There can be an impact on your marketability in the future. Notice my language there. There can be an impact on your marketability.

Now, why do I say that? Firms claim to look for stability. They punish those with less stable backgrounds by affording them fewer opportunities. You can defeat that by having extraordinary and marketable skills. You can talk about how positions were misrepresented and weren't of interest to you.

The extra layer to this is that I don't know what kind of work this person does. I don't know if this person has a quote unquote career position."-Are they an accountant? Do they work in IT? Do they work in engineering. You know, a professional position where there is likely to be more punishment versus an administrative position where the it is more normal for there to be turned over OR you are trying to figure it out because you just finished school and you don't know what to do with your life.

In those circumstances, you can sincerely look at someone and simply say, I use myself as an example., "I went to college and graduated with a degree in political science. How marketable was that? I was fortunate in that I stumbled into something that I liked and worked there for a long period of time. I didn't know what to do with my political science degree after graduation of the work on a political campaign or work in politics or government. None of these options really appealed to me so I have to spend some time trying to figure it out. It took a couple of tries but now I have figured out that I really like what I do and want to build a career in this field." Notice what I did? I acknowledge the instability of my background and then, went from there.

You can do what you want. You can explain it and do it with sincerity and that will make all the difference in the world. If you sound nervous or sound insincere, it won't work. However, if you can explain it in a casual and sincere manner which, by the time you get to this point, you have interviewed a bunch of times in your career, I'm sure you have discovered, "The Theater of Interviewing," in learning how to present your ideas well.

Present it in a way that everyone at the new organization gets it and understands that now you are ready to settle down.
