Why Do Companies Want to Do Phone Interviews or Zoom Interviews?

Are they just too cheap to fly someone out? Is anyone ever hired from a phone interview?

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people in organizations you know workforce related issues or workplace issues, job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading things along those lines. Someone asked me a wonderful question.

Why do employers want to do job interviews over the phone? Is it because they’re too cheap to fly you to their location? Is anyone ever hired through a telephone interview? Okay. So, I know if the shoe were on the other foot, you’d want to do a phone interview. But putting that aside, let me just take the question as it’s been posed.

Are they too cheap? You bet they are. Why? Because they don’t want to get scammed. There are people out there who will have a phony resume so they can do a trip on someone else’s dime.

Do you blame them? I used to see this happen with some regularity until firms smartened up and just started to do phone interviews as a way of screening. It’s a time saver and a money saver for them. They do phone interviews locally for that reason.

They do them certainly if they’d have to fly you in for an interview. Especially as a junior person, they have very little to go on other than what you’ve told them and their own experience with scammers. So, are they too cheap? You bet.

You bet they are and rightly so. If I were a shareholder in that firm, I’d rather do it by phone or video first before committing x number of hundred dollars to fly you out and put you up in a hotel and fly you back. And, if you’re working through a recruiter, you can always encourage them to reimburse you if you’re going to offer up the idea of you flying out at your own expense.

Anything goes if you can get it from them, right? I’ll simply say . . . what was the other part of that question? Is anyone ever hired through a phone interview? No. No. No one’s ever hired through a phone interview unless it’s with a firm that’s not worth much of anything.

So, I’ll simply say their goal is to be efficient. As such, they don’t want to commit to flying someone out unless they think they’re going to hire you and that’s what the purpose of this is. I’m Jeff Altman.
