What You Should Do Before Accepting a Job Offer? | JobSearchTV.com

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Many people are leaving jobs not long after joining because the position was misrepresented or the work environment wasn’t what they were led to believe. Here’s what you can do to head off a problem.

Deciding Between Multiple Job Offers

What should you do before accepting a job offer? It’s really very simple. I want to remind you that, just like you were on good behavior during the interview process, so were they. I say that because someone was probably doing that job previously, and they chose to leave. If you ask them about why they left, you’ll get some sort of BS that says, ‘Oh, they left for a better opportunity.’ ‘What made it a better options? Why did your job suck, that they decided to go to a better opportunity? More money? Better career?’

You know, if you ask them that question, you’re gonna get a fluffy answer. And the issue that I find time and again why people wind up leaving their jobs, especially not long after joining is that the job has misrepresented to them, the environment in particular is one of the things that’s misrepresented to them.

People write to me all the time and say, ‘I was hired to accomplish a certain thing, but they keep putting roadblocks in my way. So you want to know about stuff before you join rather than after. And the easiest way to do that is find someone who works for that company on LinkedIn. Ideally, someone within that group and talk with them about the organization. Reach out to several people. Connect with them, or call them on the phone at their office, and leave a message saying, ‘you know, I’m up for a position. I’ve just received an offer. I just want to get an idea of what it’s like to work for the firm. By the way, would you happen to know so and so?

Now, many of you are going to be fearful. ‘Oh, I couldn’t do that.’ Well, why not? It could get back to them. And if they approach you, you can always say, ‘hey, look, I’m doing my due diligence, just like you’ve been doing with me. You’re doing reference checks, right? Well, I’m in effect, doing a reference check. So what’s the problem?’

So always try and see if you can reach out to someone who’s works there, or preferably, who worked there, who left, who can give you the real scoop about what it’s like to work in that group, for that organization, for that company.
