Stupid Job Search Mistakes: Being on the Wrong Side of History
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
With data mining developing so quickly and the firm’s ability to check you becoming easier, I remind you to make a conscious choice about sharing your opinions.
The Warning Sign of a Problem or That They Aren’t Sure
This is a simple video to remind you of 1 of those stupid job-search mistakes that people make way too often. I call it, “Being on the wrong side of history.”
We let it a very hyper-charged times with people arguing relentlessly about one issue or another. I don’t want to take you away from any a conscious decision you choose to make but I want to encourage you to make a conscious decision.
Whether you are right or left makes no difference because there is going to come a time when your opinion is not going to be enough to satisfy “the revolutionaries.” I want to be clear if you’re progressive, there’s going to be someone who’s going to overturn your opinions later on. Don’t believe me? Just remember that the policy called “Don’t Ask. Don’t Tell” was popular among progressive years ago and see how that turned out?
The issue more than anything is that data and data collection has become so dominant for so many organizations and that is only getting more so. Understand that firms are using data mining techniques now that are relatively immature be getting better every day to find people and learn everything about them before they meet.
How does that affect you? Real simple. It’s your choice as to whether or not your speech is protected and whether or not you want to sue if someone chooses not to interview you based upon your opinion
If you don’t think this is an issue because you’re in business for yourself, think twice about that. There are people out there looking to see what people’s political opinions are.
I just want you to be conscious. Make decisions that you think are right for you. I’m not going to lecture you about your politics. I personally don’t care. All I want you to do is be conscious that what you say and what you do online may have an impact, even though you may think it’s popular now, it may come back to bite you in the butt in the future.
