EP 1490 Job hunters make all sorts of stupid mistakes when they interview.

Summary

I want to talk with you today about 1 of the stupid job search mistakes that is reminder by listening to a podcast. It was talking about how in the world of sports, There was the humbling defeat of the Atlanta Falcons in The Super Bowl last year.

I want to be clear that the podcast cannot speak in these terms. The Falcons were up 28-3, It is the middle of the 3rd quarter and they are destroying the New England Patriots. The fans are celebrating. The players aren't celebrating but the fans are, thinking it is in the bag. But I know, that in job hunting, there are People who at a certain stage in the job process Think it is in the bag and start to ease up. In the course of easing up, they make stupid mistake after stupid mistake or one critical one that proves so costly.

I remember when I was a beginning recruiter back in The Stone Ages, when was still working at employment agency as a beginner, and hearing a story about a guy who is interviewing at General Foods , which, at that time, was a behemoth consumer products firm that made lots of cereal products and other well-known products. This was a talented technical guy, well spoken, Great appearance, and he has been in for all day. Is soon to meet the Director of mIS Which, at that time, was the title for the top person in technology. Is there talking to this person And ask him, "why are you looking for a job now?" He answers by saying In his cocky and arrogant manner, "I want to work in a better organization. Right now, I work with a bunch of (I apologize if you are listening to this nd are a member of one of these categories; this is what he said) slobs and Indians. I want to work with a better class of people."

Suffice it to say that the director had the good sense to escort this person out the door Immediately. The candidate said, "I don't understand what's going on."Well, you just present yourself as a racist and as demeaning to people who had worked their way up. Thank goodness you were escorted out and that is what happens when you let your guard down, thinking that you have it in the bag.

Sports is a great humbling vehicle for so many who in their arrogance believe that everything is fine and everything is good. They are taught pretty quickly that if they ease up their opponent will come back and destroyed them. Don't make that kind of mistake. Always remember that you are always selling until the time you are in the ground. The reality is that once you are on the job, selling your ideas occurs, right? You have to sell your ideas constantly or else you become another person working there with nothing special about you.

You are always selling. You never let your guard up.

The 10000 Hour Rule and Job Hunting | JobSearchRadio.com

Listen to the full episode here:
http://webtalkradio.net/internet-talk-radio/2016/10/13/job-search-radio-the-10000-hour-rule-and-job-hunting/

More than eight years ago, Malcolm Gladwell released the book called, “Outliers: The Story of Success.” Among the many great points he makes, he popularized the notion of the 10,000 hour rule. On this show, I utilize the 10,000 hour rule to make a point about you and being a job hunter.

Summary

I want to talk to job hunters and say something that will give you what I think is a Homer Simpson moment. You've heard of the 10,000 hour rule, right? It takes 10,000 hours of focus concerted effort under the advice and tutelage of the teacher in order to be an expert. When you start job hunting, you have exactly how much experience? Think about it. You have exactly how much? And you putting how much effort into preparing? Writing your resume. What do you know about writing resumes? You may have read a bunch of them but how much experience you actually have writing one? Judging by what I see from people, somewhere near zero. How about interviewing? How much interviewing have you ever done? I doubt it's anywhere near 10,000 hours and then you wonder why you don't get results..Maybe it's about networking. You have the LinkedIn profile that doesn't get results or maybe you don't even have a LinkedIn profile and wonder and wonder why no one is calling you.Salary negotiation! That's the one. But you don't really have a lot of experience with that either and wonder why you don't get results.Let me ask you a question. If you could go to a website and get answers to all the critical interview questions and get advice from a master, without be helpful to you? I'm sure it would be.I recently launched JobSearchCoachingHQ.com, and inexpensive site, with over 400 pieces of content including all my books and guides the job hunting, lots of videos, a bunch of podcasts, articles that I've written, curated so it is really good, available to you on the site for one price.Plus the ability to ask me questions when you're stuck with something. You may think your friends, family, former managers know what they're talking about when they speak with you but stop and think for a moment. How many jobs have they ever filled? You may say your boss or former boss interviews a lot of people and certainly they should know. Trust me. When they're on the other side of the desk, they stink up the joint and if you don't believe me, point blank you're wrong. I interview people who are hiring managers and they are awful… But they give you advice. It's time to stop giving other people advice about what they should do and take some for yourself.Figure it out. When you write that resume how much experience that you have? Three hours over the course of 20 years? You don't know what you're doing. You think you do but you don't know what you're doing.Again, JobSearchCoachingHQ.com is my site with advice for job hunters good anywhere in the world (you have to speak English to understand me, of course). There is a lot of great material there and you'll get your questions answered by me and were building the community there were other people will be able to chime in and offer you advice.Again, JobSearchCoachingHQ.com

Stupid Job Search Mistakes: Being on the Wrong Side of History | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1380 I remind you make a conscious choice about sharing your opinions.

Summary

This is a simple video to remind you 1 of those stupid job-search mistakes that people make way too often. I call it, "Being on the wrong side of history."

We let it a very hyper-charged times with people arguing relentlessly about one issue or another. I don't want to take you away from any conscious decision you choose to make but I want to encourage you to make a conscious decision.

Whether you are right or left makes no difference because there is going to come a time where your opinion is not going to be enough to satisfy "the revolutionaries." I want to be clear, if you're progressive, there's going to be someone who's going to overturn your opinions later on. Don't believe me? Just remember that the policy called "Don't Ask. Don't Tell" was popular among progressive years ago and see how that is turned out?

The issue more than anything that is that data and data collection has become so dominant for so many organizations and that is only getting more so. Understand that firms are using data mining techniques now that are relatively immature be getting better every day to find people and learn everything about them before they meet.

How does that affect you? Real simple. It's your choice as to whether or not your speech is protected and whether or not you want to sue if someone chooses not to interview you based upon your opinion

If you don't think this is an issue because you're in business for yourself, think twice about that. There are people out there looking to see what people's political opinions are.

I just want you to be conscious. Make decisions that you think are right for you. I'm not going to lecture you about your politics. I personally don't care. All I want you to do is be conscious that what you say and what you do online may have an impact, even though you may think it's popular now, it may come back to bite you in the butt in the future.

Yoga for Job Hunters | JobSearchRadio.com

Listen to the full episode here:
http://webtalkradio.net/internet-talk-radio/2017/05/15/yoga-for-job-hunters/

EP 304 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses what he calls the yoga of job hunting.

Summary

If you stay in your comfort zone talking to the same people over and over again, applying to the same jobs you find online over and over again, you are going to wind up in a small confined area. Instead, you want to be thinking like yoga, which is about the stretch and doing slightly more all the time in order to grow your muscle, become more limber and feel better.

Too often, we as adults (I include you millennials) start to think in terms of the rules you have been taught and systems that you have been taught to believe in that, frankly, are just self-limiting beliefs that others are imposing upon you.

As a guest of mine on Job Search Radio said a while back (his name is Chance Taureau), we are the product of all of our habits. If our habit is to second-guess ourselves and to work in small confined areas, we are constantly going to be having doubt and second-guessing ourselves. What you want to be doing is constantly going to the stretch. I'm not going to be stretching out for you now; I did that earlier today. I'll simply say that what's important is to stretch a little bit, to get to that place where you go a little bit more every day and discover that you can do more.

I remember going to a yoga class some years ago and the teacher said, "STRETCH all the way possible." That was great. Then they said, "STRETCH a little bit further." Remember, with stretch all the way possible and lo and behold we were able to go further. It's the same way with job hunting. It's the same way with networking.

When all is said and done, your self-limiting beliefs are what is probably holding you back from reaching out and connecting with that person that you really admire or can really help you. It's time to change the behavior and stretch just a little bit more every single day in order to get what you want..

EP 1298 So many of you run your job search like a bunch of sheeple. What do I mean?

Summary

For now, the economy is decent; there are cities with our great employment opportunities, and others word is a lot harder. Regardless, whether you are in a city with a lot of advantages that is higher in droves or not, there are things that you can learn to allow you to command more money when it comes down to the are making you an offer.

You see, sometimes employers make lukewarm offers because you haven't really sold them well enough. Sometimes, it is just because they have a budget that limits them. The budget is for less money than what you are looking for and they throw a, "Hail Mary" at you. Then, it's up to you to say, "No, let's negotiate. I'm not prepared to accept $10-$20,000 less than what I'm looking for. Let's talk about what we each need to do to reach a successful conclusion."

Most of the time, people simply act irrationally, immaturely and without perspective. I'm not trying to be chopped except to point out what is obvious. If you talk to recruiters all over the world, corporate or agency recruiters, they will tell you in all honesty, how badly people interview, how badly they run their job search, and that they need help. It is up to you to act and get help.

I saw a piece the other day that asked, "Should I talk to a recruiter or a career coach?" Recruiters are there for one purpose – – to fill jobs with their clients and then get paid. If you think you're going to get impartial advice from a recruiter, you're wrong. They'll help you get the interview, they will help you get the job WITH THEIR CLIENT, but they are not there to help you get a job, except with their client.

JobSearchCoacahingHQ.com will help you no matter who the client is and you'll get great advice from me. One on one advice that deals with your situation. Check out the site. There is a time there that can help you. All my books and guys the job hunting… Videos… Podcasts… Articles that I have written... All there for one low price.

Taking a Top-Down Approach | JobSearchRadio.com

Listen to the full episode here:
http://webtalkradio.net/internet-talk-radio/2017/06/20/taking-a-top-down-approach/

EP 330 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to take a top-down approach to your job search.

Summary

Most of the time, you're going out of your way to apply for jobs. I get it. There's a job opening out there and you're trying to talk to people and apply for that job. Here's a different approach; I'm not telling you replace that technique with this one; I want to encourage you to add this 1 to your toolbelt.

What I want to do is start reaching out to people that you want to work for; you can find them on LinkedIn and a host of different ways. Then, correspond with them. To be clear, I'm not telling you to stalk them.

For example, if you are an executive there are things that you've written and done that they relate to something that interests them. Forward that to them. Indicate that you're interested in working for them and for their organization; this is a sample of your work that they might find interesting; Hope to be able to meet them at some point soon. Leave it at that.

Follow-up a day or 2 later, just to confirm that they received it. Maybe you get through. Maybe you don't. The idea that was to correspond with executives about executive roles. Don't just simply apply for jobs. Network your way to these people as well. Kind of box them in/surround them with communications so that they get to know you and know your ideas. Knowing your ideas will go a long way toward getting their attention.

I want to be clear. Nothing works all the time and this will be another example that. If all you're doing is applying for jobs, if all you're doing is circuitous networking or informational interviews, you're missing out on approach with this 1 that will help you pick up some more interviews and perhaps that job that you're looking for.
