I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, a career and leadership coach, the head
coach for two websites and
I think my camera's a little off. There we go. So I want to talk with you about one of
those stupid interview mistakes, stupid career mistakes, I should say, that
people make all the time and it's the mistake of taking themselves too
seriously you work so hard yep yep go all out you spend down time connecting
with people that could be your boss that could be your boss's boss you're not
likable it's not that your dislikable but you're the phrase all working or no
play makes Jack or Jill a dull person well you're at that point in your career
where all you're doing is busting a gut and in case you haven't noticed
competence is only one variable by which people get ahead
Normally it involves being known, liked, trusted and respected. Notice those are a
bunch of feelings that involves relationships it involves contact and
all you do when you have your head down all the time
is avoid other people now one thing you'll discover the more experience you
develop is your job involves managing and relating to people if you're Junior
you're functioning is a doer if you're a manager you're controlling processing
people. You're not relating necessarily although you think you are. You're not
inspiring. You're controlling what they're doing. If you're leading, if you're
functioning as a director if you in roles that involve working through
managers to get results just trying to think of it how can I inspire people how
do I work through people to get the results that I want
The person who gets ahead isn't always the smartest or work the hardest
although those are very qualities to have people get ahead by being alert the
opportunity sometimes its internal to their firm more often than not its
external one of the benchmarks that firms use in evaluating talent
particularly as you get more senior is how you work through people how you
relate to the people reporting to you what they would say about you and
frankly you need to pay attention with that too so don't just simply take your
work and yourself so seriously that you forget about others remember remember
you're going to be measured by the success that they have not just your own
